The New Jail and Council Room
This new structure now being erected on a lot adjoining the Catholic Church, promises to be a very creditable one. The front is to be a Council Room; 16 by 16 feet, and the rear is being made into two cells, one of which is 10x10 ft, and the other 6x10 feet. The floor of the jail is double and the walls are six inches solid thickness, are filled with closely driven nails. It is being built by Messrs. Peck & McKinpie, and will be finished in about two weeks.
Immigrants.—Five families, all new immigrants, settled in the vicinity of Bayside Ana this week.
Rain Fall.—The amount of rain that fell last Saturday night and Sunday morning, as estimated by Dr. Higgins, was one-eighth of an inch. As estimated by W. R. Olden, Esq., near Anaheim, and fourth of an inch. The rain clouds still linger around the verge of the horizon, and twenty drops came down yesterday morning.
Equalization.—The School Board of Equalization is about to convene. See their notice elsewhere.
Lee's Circus is to perform here this evening. Messrs. Painter and Durand will perform their celebrated Niagara Leap in public, before the exhibition commencements.
Races.—The races take place at Sam Bland's, this afternoon. A dance this evening at same place.

LEE's Circus is to perform here this evening. Moats, Painter and Durand will perform their celebrated Niagara Leap in public, before the exhibition commences.
Races — The races take place at Sam Bland's, this afternoon. A dance this evening at same place.
Shoo Fly! — Go 'way! don't you boder me. I think I hear the angels sing But hark! Do you hear the tramp and watter, the rumble and tumbl of wag-one unloading, the people who crowd the door at the Hardware Store of Polhemus & Bro.? People must have stoves this chilly weather, and they know the men to buy them of.
PERSONAL — Our esteemed Townsman E.J. Polhemus, Esq., left last week on a flying visit to Pioho Rancho, in Monterey county, for the benefit of his health. Those who owe him will be pleased to learn that he will return in two weeks.
[COMMUNICATED.]
Ed. Gazette: It is with pleasure that I notice your kind admonition to the people of Anaheim concerning the resolution of our City Fathers in regard to licenses.
You will, I hope, allow me to inquire if this action is not a positive evil to our town's progress, inasmuch as the grade of licenses commence at the investment of two thousand dollars. Who is it in the present state of our town, who will invest two thousand dollars in business, unless it is groceries or a bar-room? Who will ever dream that a capital of two thousand dollars invested will yield the interest of that amount for the next year to come at least? And are we to deprive smaller beginners? Although there is certain enumeration of particular businesses, this does not comprise one-half of the classes of business which might be started with a capital of from $200 to $500.
Section Nine of the License Ordinance says: "The proprietor or proprietors of each and every commercial, trading and drug store, that may have a capital invested in it or less than two thousand

ARRIVED:

Section Nine of the License Ordinance says: "The proprietor or proprietors of each and every commercial, trading and drug store, that may have a capital invested in it of less than two thousand dollars shall pay a quarterly license of $5, and over and two thousand dollars, $10."
Now, is not every retail business a commercial and trading business. I have lobed in vain in Webster to find any other meaning.
If these classes which might begin with the small capital of two or three hundred dollars, have to pay 150 per cent more for licenses than in San Francisco, and with the prospect of one-fifth part of the business, who will embark in it? Yet by proper grade, say beginning with $200 and upwards, and charge every one according to investment with regard to the probable profits; we would doubtedly improve the business of this town. As it is, however, I consider it absurd, and a dead check upon small beginners. If money invested does not pay the interest, will any one invest?
Anaheim Well Wisher.
Brodrick keeps the only legitimate Book and Stationery store in Los Angeles.
Removal—L. Wartonberg has removed his mistaken business all—to a place on Los Angeles street adjoining the new Bakery. If people fail to find him but let them notice of the boy who drives a little red wagon.
Bakery and Coffee Saloon — Messrs Menzel & Co. have fitted up their new bakery building on Los Angeles street opposite the tin shop, in perfect order. Its front is divided into two apartments; one of which is to be used as a saloon for bread, cakes and confectionery, and the other for a coffee and bar rooftop.
P. Davis & Bros. have a large and well selected stock of household furniture for sale.
Social — On Tuesday evening last, the Mite society, for the benefit of Fairview Sunday School met at the residence of Judge Evay, and had a sociable. On Tuesday evening next, another gathering for the same purpose will be held at the residence of Dr. David Taylor near the city.
The lumber with which Mr P. Richards' new two story building is to be erected, is being hauled upon the ground adjourning the Eureka Saloon.
The Anaheim Gazette, published in the southern portion of this state by G. W. Barter, formerly of Oakland, is now only in its fourth number, and its publisher announces a subscription list of 402 names. This is doing better than some older communities we know of. No books are kept in the Gazette office, the business being conducted on strictly then principles — Brooklyn Magazine.
Following is a list of actions in the Court of Justice Davis.
Nov. 26—D Quintana vs. F. W. Kuelp for $20, alleged to have been misapplied, and $30 damages set for Monday.
Nov. 25—John Hanna vs. L. Dartigues, $40 damages for trespass.
Nov. 30—L. Verdugo vs. L. Luna for recovery of specie, personal property, valued at $100—Cases heard and set for trial.

C. A. Ferguson vs. Abel Stearns, Yankees dependants—Answered—Cases set for Saturday 11 o'clock AM., in the Mayor's Court.
Nov. 30—One solitary individual, a representative from the Flowery Kingdom, for the privilege of testing his capacity to hold Anaheim wine mixed with ninety-rod brandy, paid the city ten dollars.
It is said that the stage now leaves the mail regularly at Santa Ana post office.

TO PHYSICIANS.
New York, August 15th, 1834.
Allow me to call your attention to my Preparation of Compound Extract Bacha. The components are Bacha, Long Leaf, Calhoun Juniper Barrie.
Mode of Preparation—Bacha in yeas, simple Berries, by distillation, to form a fine gin. Calhoun extracted by displacement with spirit obtained from Juniper Barrie; very little organic is used, and a small proportion of spirit. It is more palatable than any now in use.
Bacha is prepared by Druggists in a dark color. It is a plant that emits its fragrance; the action of a flame destroys this (its native principle), leaving a dark and glimolous deposition. Milk is the color of ingredients. The Bacha in my preparation predominates; the smallest quantity of the other ingredients are added, to prevent hesitation; upon inspection it will be found not to be a Tincture, as make in Pharmacology, nor to a Syrup—and therefore can be used in cases which fever or inflammation exist. In this, you have the knowledge of the ingredients and the mode of preparation.
Hoping that you will favor it with a trial, and that upon inspection it will meet with your appreciation.
With a feeling of profound confidence,
I am, very respectfully.
