Queries in Burma — The Bishop of Calcutta recently visited Burma, and the Indian papers describe the difficulties which prevented a proposed interview between the Bishop and the King of Burma. The latter insisted on the Bishop squatting cross-legged before him, a small carpet being the only concession he would make. Dr. Milma asked to be allowed to stand, but the king was firm; he could not allow any man either to stand before him, or to occupy a seat not lower than his majesty invariably reclining on a very low couch on these occasions. The Bishop was likewise firm; he declined to suffer the indignity of sitting cross-legged on a bit of carpet; and, as the chief Buddhist priest is allowed a seat on a level with the Kings, he urged that similar courtesy might be shown to one of corresponding rank. The result was that the Bishop left Mandalay without having met the King, although both were very desirous that an interview should take place.
The Chicken Business — If a man had a well conducted chicken ranch in these days, says the Antioch Ledger, he could make money. Eggs are high, and will be higher still before the winter is over, and chickens and ducks will have a good marketable value about holiday time—in fact, they find sale at fair prices any time. A few acres off land, with four or five hundred dollars, can be made to yield a good income, more than if put to any other use, and we cannot understand why it is that farmers do not pay more attention to this profitable business. A dozen eggs are worth more than a bushel of wheat in the Western States, and can be produced with less trouble and risk. Care and constant attention are requisite, to be sure, to make success certain, but no more than in any other business. There are plenty of places in this vicinity which cannot advantageably be used for any other
A dozen eggs are worth more than a bushel of wheat in the Western States, and can be produced with less trouble and risk. Care and constant attention are requisite, to be sure, to make success certain, but no more than in any other business. There are plenty of places in this vicinity which cannot advantageously be used for any other purpose. Rabbits, frogs and terrapins will pay well, too. We have known fortunes to be made in this business, with but a small outlay of capital. We expect some day to see that farmers are paying more attention to poultry raising.
It is estimated that America, when her productive power is fully developed, will feed four times as many per acre as there are now on the face of the earth.
The Gayette Office has a larger assortment of types than is on hand elsewhere south of San Francisco. It also has larger types by two inches than is used elsewhere in this region, and hence those in want of Mammoth Posters would do well to call.
