PAGE SIX Plain Dealer An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday PAUL V. HESTER Editor and Publisher Subscription Rate—In N. Orange co., per year, $3; 6 months, $1.75 Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Calif., as second class matter DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS O taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.—Psalm 4.8. SELF-PITY Two men were discussing a mutual friend who had never been successful at anything. One expressed wonder that anyone could morn in a nutshell: "Oh, he is sorry for himself." The man who is be such a consistent failure, while the other explained the situa-sorry for himself will never go very far if any undertaking. He spends too much time bemoaning his lot and not enough trying to better his condition. He is like one who falls before he makes an attempt because he knows that one so persecuted by fate as he cannot succeed. The practical politician has learned that to make a man feel sorry for himself is to win this man's vote. First he takes away his manhood, his power to think for himself, by telling him that his low estate is due to the greed of the rich, the injustice of the laws of the country and the machinations of Wall street. This takes away all his ambition and renders him useless to himself and all others except the candidate who has emasculated him and for whom he will cast a vote. Those who try to make us sorry for ourselves are our worst enemies. They play upon that trait of human nature which encourages us to save our faces by placing the blame for our faults and failures on someone or something else. The young man who starts out to make a success in life should realize that he is the captain of his soul, the master of his fate; that self-pity and achievement are not compatible. GLEANINGS FROM THE BOOK OF LIFE THE ETERNAL QUESTION What lies beyond the grave? It is a question that has trou-bled men from the beginning. Men like to believe in immortality. There is something bey-ond the grave, they reason; death does not put an end to every-thing. Addison's lines sum up this feeling: It must be so—Plato, thou reasonest well! Else whence, this pleasing hope, this fond desire, This longing after immortality? Or whence this secret dread and inward horror, Of falling into nought? Why shrinks the soul Back on herself, and startles destruction? COLLECTION OF FRENCH-HALIAN ANBELGIAN WAR! THE ETERNAL QUESTION What lies beyond the grave? It is a question that has troubled men from the beginning. Men like to believe in immortality. There is something beyond the grave, they reason; death does not put an end to everything. Addison's lines sum up this feeling: It must be so—Plato, thou poasonest well!— Else whence this pleasing hope, this fond desire, This longing after immortality? Or whence this secret dread and inward horror, Of falling into nought? Why shrinks the soul Back on herself, and startles destruction? Tis the divinity that stirs within us; Tis heaven itself, that points out an hereafter, And intimates eternity to man. The grave is not dark or cold to the dead, but only to the living, it seemed to Burroughs. "The light of the eye, the warmth of the body, still exist undiminished in the universe, but in other relations, under other forms." "Shall the flower complain because it fades and falls? It has to fall before the fruit can appear." But what is the fruit of the flower of life? Surely not the grave, as the loose thinking of some seems to imply. The only fruit I can see is in fairer flowers, or a higher type of mind and life that follows in this world, and to which our lives may contribute. "The flower of life has improved through the ages—the geologic ages; from the flower of the brute, it has become the flower of the man. You and I perish, but something goes out, or may go out, from us that will help forward a higher type of mankind. "To what end? Who knows; we cannot cross question the infinite. "Something has eventuated in man, and something has profited by his ameliorations. We must regard him as a legitimate product, and we must look upon death as a legitimate part of the great cycle—and evil only from our temporary and personal point of view, but a good from a view of the whole." It seemed to John Locke. "He that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be but little the better for anything else." "Men's happiness or misery is most part of their own making. He whose mind directs not wisely, will never take the right way and he, whose body is crazy and feeble, will never be able to advance in it. "I confess, there are some men's constitutions of body and mind so vigorous, and well framed by nature, that they need not much assistance from others; but by the strength of their natural genius, they are from their cradles carried towards what is excellent; and by the privilege of their happy constitutions, are able to do wonders. But examples of this kind are few; and I think I may say, that of all the men we meet with, nine of ten are what they are, good or evil, useful or not, by their education." It is education, and not mere book education, that makes the great difference in mankind. The little, or almost insensible impressions in our tender infancies have every important and lasting consequences; and there it is, as in the fountains of some rivers, where a gentle application of the hand turns the flexible waters in channels that make them take quite contrary courses; and by this direction given them first in the source, they receive different tendencies, and arrive at last at very remote and different places. And it should be remembered that the minds of children are as easily turned this or that way, as water self- No More Dull, Blonde Hair Dull, streaky or blonde hair can now be to its natural charming and loveliness. COMMENTES OF THE PRESS: What Editors Are Saying RELIGION AND CIVILIZATION: San Bernardino Sun Although civilization may temporarily have outstripped religion, it has not outgrown it. The words are those of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. He said them while addressing a Bible class of the Park Avenue Baptist Church in New York. This season of wealth, who has been able to conceive that private riches should be used for the public welfare, has more faith in religion than in civilization, for he warned that the "headlong progress" are interesting (or this progress, or it) has made him one of the richest men in the world. Perhaps in the way of defending his own great wealth. Mr. Rockefeller declared: "Wealth, in the hands of too unserapulous, is a course worth in the hands of a pomp-and-fantasy." His words are very true and no one can charge that the Rockefeller millions have not been used in part to aid humanity. A greater portion of the Rockefeller fortune has gone into scientific welfare work which has produced results that are at blessing to mankind and had the nation been required to wait until taxes were used for the public purposes to which Rockefeller millions have gone, the work in question would probably still be done. Mr. Rockefeller declares that in the last thirty-four years the population has increased 30 per cent, but in that time the total membership of the Protestant and Catholic churches has increased more than 120 per cent. These figures are for the United States. But Mr. Rockefeller believes religion of today in or better quality than religion of thirty-four years ago. Religion has developed with civilization. A century ago religion was stuttered and confined to the meeting house. The Scripture was accepted literally and the chief aim was the salvation of the soul from damnation. Warmth, beauty, joy, and freedom were absent. But today they are present everywhere. Due to the discoveries of science strict adherence to the letter of the Scripture is increasingly less possible, but the lessons are more impressive. Emphasis in the religion as it is taught today, is on service and the making of worthy members of society. Religion of today is applied to human affairs. There are hospitals, colleges, housing, child labor and factory laws. The church is deeply concerned in all the problems that go to human welfare. We must be guided by principles springing from love of God; hence love of our brother. This is today the true spirit of religion, and through it religion is succeeding in a greater way than ever before. Moral judgments are more in the spirit of Christ's words: "Let him who is without guilt cast the first stone." Said Mr. Rockefeller: "The development of man's spiritual character has not kept pace with his intellect. Civilization, the accumulation of mind and matter has temporarily outstripped religion. Religion must quicken its pace, otherwise man will not wake in time to save himself from the nightmare of war." Religion has adjusted itself to development of civilization in generations past, and it merely needs to continue on its path to overtake the present stage of civilization for there are signs that No More Dull, Faded Blonde Hair!
