WORK SHOES..... $1,89.99 HEAVY INTEREST BURDENS RANCHER High interest charges on ranches which were purchased when orange prices were sky high and still are unpaid constitute the principal burden on certain growers in the Anaheim district, says F. S. Ruggles of Los Angeles field and sales representative of the M. O. D. who is working in and about Anaheim again for a while. Growers who came here and bought groves when oranges were selling at five or six cents a pound on the tree naturally are suffering now, unless possessed of plenty of capital to tide them over to another super-boom period, he asserted. Ruggles does not take very seriously any other setback in the industry, whether wind and cold weather or anything else. He puts the frost and wind damage combined in the Southland at 15 to 20 per cent with lemons suffering worst. This field man, who has traveled widely in the course of his duties, was inclined to think that a smaller crop of lemons, due to the percentage of unmarketable fruit withdrawn, might be good for the lemon growers. While favoring any measure that will prevent the shipment of fruit really damaged, Ruggles declared that in the source of his experience with the Bureau of Markets of the U. S. Department of Agriculture several years ago, he had seen California citrus fruit in Chicago which, tho it contained crystals of ice, was still edible and in demand in certain quarters. The thing which should not be done, said Ruggles, was to ship damaged fruit under the regular brands and sell it for what it is not. Damage is spotted, he continued and some regions that suffered in previous seasons escaped this time. Higher prices will look after some of the loss that might have been suffered, tho of course no price prediction is safe as yet. FOREIGN TRADE MAKES RECORD WASHINGTON, Jan. 8.—With exports of more than a billion dollars in excess of imports, the foreign trade of the United States in 1924 was the greatest of any normal year in the history of the nation, the department of commerce announced today. Foreign commerce for 1924 was $3,225,000,000, bringing the total since the war to $73,817,000,-000. Exports exceeded imports by $18,228,000,000 in the six year period. The favorable balance of trade was exceeded in the war years and in 1919, 1920 and 1921 but officials pointed out that period cannot be considered in a comparative analysis of commerce, since then European production practically was at a standstill. This country exported commodities valued at approximately $4,-650,000,000, an increase of 12 per cent over 1923 and 115 per cent over the average for five years before the war. Anaheim Realtors Have Oninstallation The new officers of the organization took office yesterday at the regular weekly luncheon of the Anaheim Realty Board. The board elected to membership A. E. Hargrove, former president, who resigned soon after his term expired. There was no speaker. The quarterly meeting in Fresno, just closed, at which the new president was installed, of the directors of the State Assn. was very successful, it is said. Nearly 40 boards were represented and more than 50 state directors. Anaheim could not be represented. State Real Estate Commissioner Edwin T. Keiser reported on the plans for a qualification test, whereby each broker applicant would appear before the local board committee in each town or before the examining board of the state organization. Resolutions were passed, commending the commissioner's stand. Appointment of a vigilance committee by each board to aid the commissioner in eliminating law volators was favored. Yesterday another cut of 25 cents per 100 pounds was announced at San Francisco by the California-Hawaiian Sugar Refining Co. The coming in of the new crop was responsible.
