Articles of incorporation this new road were filed in Denver, Wyo., several weeks ago will connect the Denver and Grande Western with the Denver and Salt Lake Western at a point on the western slope of the continental divide, 150 miles from Denver. The mountain peaks between this connecting road and Denver are some of the highest in America; since railroads began traverse the continent they have been effective barriers to transportation. The Denver and Salt Lake Western, known as the Morrison Road, was the only railroad attempt to climb them. On James peak, where the Moffat crosses the continental divide, 22 miles of track are used in spiral curves before the straightaway distance from Denver is increased six miles. The Denver and Rio Grande Western, instead of climbing over the divide to Denver, crept 221 miles south through Tennessee pass to the valley of the Arkansas river, down through the Royal Gorge, and then made its way back north to Denver. The Moffat tunnel, six miles in length, will eliminate the 23 miles over James peak, and give an almost direct trunk line west of Denver. Forty miles of new track will connect the Moffat railroad with the Rio Grade, where it turns south to win through Tennessee pass. The Moffat tunnel and the new road will decrease the distance from Denver to Salt Lake City by 173 miles. Dangerous curves and grades over the divide will be eliminated by the Moffat tunnel, giving the nation snow and direct transcontinental rail. W. M. McMOSTER Potten, G. C.
