FARMERS' RETURNS ARE HUGE THIS YEAR The American farmer is coming through its crop season in good financial form. He has gotten more of his products than at any time in five years. The important crops this year run to almost $9,500,000,000 is estimated duration. The crops were not the greatest in volume, but they brought more. Hence this year's total income to the farmers is more than $700,000,000 greater than last year's, and morgan one billion greater than the 1922 returns. This is due gratifying. It means much greater satisfaction for the farmer. It encourages him to go on, planting generously, by discretion as to diversification of crops. Corn maintains its throne as king of crops. The amount produced this year was under last year's production. But the value of this year's yield is above that of last year. The American farmer needs no legislative strums. He needs reasonable financial accommodations. He needs fair freight rates. He needs ample railroad stock to move his crops—particularly his perishables. But theseeds can be met and these problems can be worked out by binary legislative and administrative measures. As to methods of farming and marketing, farmer best can help himself. His intelligence may be relied upon to carry him through. His initiative, his resourcefulness, his pluck will help him to tide over periods of depression, which are sure to come. value of this year's yield is above that of last year. Answer the broadcasters of untruths about California with facts, not with abuse. The army and the navy of the United States should not be increased to militaristic strength. There should be no extremes in this. Nor should there be jingoistic either in public or private life. This country is not prepared successively to resist, should war be thrust upon it. Suppose every law required a special set enforcement officers. The Duke endowment was splendid, even though it made no mention of stadiums. And yet people still have the nerve to call Dutch pants "quaint." As a general thing the hungry for self-expression is merely a hunger for applause. One thing that makes a girl as "no" is the calm assurance that he will propose again. Nobody passes resolutions of confidence if he wrecks the bar instead of killing his wife. Some men will protect the honor or of their homes if it requires blackmailing their best friends. The way to keep the public from losing interest in a graft prosecution is to work in a little sex. Our guess is that balloon pants are to be developed as parachutes as airplanes become common. There was evidence of bad taste in old-time restaurants, but it wasn't called atmosphere. I have found people who could cut down their hours of much less than this simply by increasing the amount of culture exercise they take. This does not exactly mean the amount of work they are doing, but rather in adopt- particular exercises which are especially recommended in as vitality building. Niner may consist of any food which is used in proper fashion, but I usually advise what I call the "proteid" meal in eating, consisting of one proteid food, one or more non-starred vegetables, a salad of raw vegetables, and sometimes of stewed fruits. This kind of meal seems to digest more easily than any other, and may be taken more without any bad consequences by those troubled with asthma, disorders in which a meal in the evening seems rare with sleep. However, if it is desirable, a starchy meal used in place of a proteid meal. The evenings should be spent at home reading and studying, certain number should also be devoted each week to attend meetings and amusements such as picture shows, theatre, etc. It is a good plan to set aside certain evenings to do this, even though you feel inclined to stay at home. Love does not recognize the difference between peasant and ilkado. The laden almond tree by theayside is sure to be bitter. Brothers quarrel like thieves side a house, but outside their words leap out in each other's offense. The reason why parents love the younger children best is because they have now so littleope that the elder will do well. Going downhill no one is old. Where profit is loss is hidden arby. One dog, yelping at nothing ill set ten thousand straining their collars. A raindrop is the beginning of a flood. Lies never miss their object,th are always at hand. Public profits in prohibition are more and more apparent. The cleanness of the streets, free from drunks, the cleanness of homes, free of the fear of shame and of poverty and of uncertainty—these and many other advantages are plain, and the illusory claims of "freedom" to drink what one wants are fading into the distance. But for all that, there is still too much social tone about boot-legging—something that must be met with by an "understanding" sort of penal system. There must be an enforcement department that has the common sense to know where the liquor that is drunk comes from and that will act on that knowledge. We have had quite too much both of protense that booze is easy to get where it is not, and also of knowledge that booze is easy to get with everyone knowing it but the enforcement officers. We do not decry search seizure, but they should follow knowledge of conditions, not precede it. The public generally is averse to penal enforcement that depends upon "fishing' expeditions. It upholds and applauds activity of police that does discover crime and the avenues and supports of crime. We need from Washington down an even more intelligent method of dealing with the outlawed liquor. The enforcement system is, on the whole, much more uniformly honest than it was three or four years ago. It needs to be more informed and more cunning as well.
