MOONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1924 COOLIDGE OPENS RED CROSS MEET WASHINGTON, Oct. 6—President Coolidge, formally opening the annual meeting of the American Red Cross here today, paid glowing tribute to that great institution of mercy, declaring its existence to be living proof that "materialism is not the dominant motive of the people of the United States." He praised the world wide humanitarian work of the Red Cross and urged the development of civilization along the same unselfish lines. "The Red Cross idea will develop as mankind develops," the president said. "The ideals underlying civilization are the ideals of brotherly love of tolerance of kindliness, of charity. Any departure from these is a reversion to a lower nature, to barbarism, to darkness. The beauty of life lies in meeting whatever destiny awaits us, trusting one another." Speaking still along the lines of brotherly love, Mr. Coolidge uttered what might be taken as an admonition to war-torn Europe in its present period of chaos and mistrust. "One of the great needs confronting civilization is just this kind of practical idealism, sensitive to duty, alert and ready to make the sacrifice necessary to relieve suffering and pave the way to a return of normal and happier things," he said, adding that America had manifested its unselfish sympathy during the Japanese earthquake when an appeal for $5,000,000 for aid broached in over $11,000,000. The president touched upon the great need of universal peace and ventured the opinion that, with the fear of further war effectually banished, a "very great part" of the need for such organizations as the Red Cross would vanish. PRESIDENT COOLIDGE SEES HINES HECKLED WASHINGTON, Oct. 6—President Coolidge today witnessed the heckling of Brig. Gen. Frank T. Hines, director of the U.S. Veterans Bureau, while the latter was making a speech before the National Convention of the American Red Cross on the effort of the government to care for disabled veterans of the world war. The president was the first to address the convention and after his speech introduced Gen. Hines, who spoke in laudatory terms on the work of the veterans bureau and outlined the extent of the service extended by the government in rehabilitation world war veterans. "I cannot picture," Hines said, "any American veteran who does not receive the care of medical treatment which he deserves because of his service." "Here's one," shouted a man in the audience, struggling to his feet and shaking a finger at Gen. Hines, "I only get $25 a month." He continued mumbling words that could not be heard distinctly a short distance away, while a general murmur went up from the hall. Gen. Hines paused in his speech and President Coolidge looked straight ahead, not moving a muscle of his face. Two husky detectives moved thru the crowd collared the heckler and hustled him outside. Hines went ahead with his speech. The heckler was taken to a governmental hospital for mental observation. He was Nikola Sesum, a Serbian 45 years of age, and has been living at the Salvation Army hotel. City detectives sought to keep him out of the hall when he applied for admission this morning, but Red Cross officials let him in. There is never efficient digestion without efficient mastication. Until the last few months my husband has treated me real well. He was interested in paying for our home and loves the children and says he loves me. But now another woman is trying to come between us. I have never been jealous hearted and my husband has always enjoyed the company of other women and I rather liked to see him because he is of a jolly nature and I knew he meant no harm. But with this woman it is quiet and rather refined and I liked her so much until she began flirting with my husband. She comes to my house often. He flirts openly with her but she is very sly about it. She is married but has no children. She makes a lot of fuss over my kiddies and says she wants children, but I don't believe it. What should I do? It breaks my heart to think she comes to my house for no other purpose than to see my husband. If he isn't home she asks where he is and always wants to know what turn he is working on. My husband never takes me anywhere and life seems so blank to me at times that I could end it if were not for the children. Do you flirt with another woman in my house if he did? When I first mentioned this to my husband he was so surprised to think I had a spark of jealousy in me and declared he meant nothing by it but he keeps it up and so it seems to me he is just trying to make my life miserable. Should I tell them both just what I think about it? I have never wanted this woman to know my real feelings for I think she would enjoy it if she thought she was hurting me. I haven't any nice clothes. My husband always says he wants me to have nice things but when day comes there is never any money to spare. I have tried so hard to save and get our home paid for but now I have about lost all interest in it. This woman likes to display her fine clothes and my husband is always admiring her new dress or hat to me. She is real gaudy but he seems to see her differently. I have good taste and love pretty clothes but seldom get any. BLUE. Do not mention his flirtation with the other woman again. It may make him impatient with you for doubting him. Often a wife's jealousy and interference in a slight flirtation has had serious results and has caused the husband to take more interest in the other woman than he otherwise would. Of course it hurts you to want clothes and be denied them, and at the same time have your husband admire the attire of another woman. If you are getting shabby I think it would be advisable for you to say you will have to have money for some new clothes. Where it is at all possible a woman should consider it of great importance to dress nicely. A husband likes to be proud of his wife's appearance. Of course, I realize that often it is utterly impossible for a wife to have money for clothes because the income is so small it barely provides food and shelter. In your case, however, I believe your husband could spare the money if you said you simply had to have it. Do not tell the other woman what you think of the situation. Let her feel you have faith in your husband's love for you. A Class Ad is best little salesman. Try a Classified Ad for results.
