Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Calif., as second class matter DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS NOTHING IS EASIER— Than blackening a reputation through insinuations. Than weakening a government through prosperity. Than sickening an audience through pretensions. Than impoverishing a youth through idleness. Than killing a woman's love through neglect. Than breaking a bank through gossip. Than foolin' the voters with false promises. DEFAMATION IS COMMON WAY TO RUIN MEN The favorite way of ruining—or attempting to ruin—men and women by those who hold grudges or enmities against them is to assail character. Start a particularly nauseous report; circulate it thoroughly—and this is easily done, as there are multitudes who revel in peddling filthy gossip—and hurt is done. The victim may have the courage to stand out against this cowardly process, even though it be hard to fight it; or he or she may give up, let it break down courage and health, and, mayhap, pass to a premature grave. This method of attacking men and women is all too common. It is used when other methods fail. It is used—pity to say—with too great measure of success, in so far as finding believers of the scandalous reports. No matter how hideous the rumor that may be started; no matter how innocent the victim may be, there always are those who will believe—or profess to believe. But the law of retribution frequently works in this. The defamer himself may become the target of defamation. Usually he is a coward and a weakling, and when he is attacked himself, he runs to cover and plays his true part—the coward. This big menace—for big menace it is—is a social cancer. It will be cured some time. But until it is, the murky stream of vicious scandalism will flow on and on. It is used when other methods fail. Wisdom is condensed into few and simple terms. INTERVENTION MAY BE MADE IN CHINA The most disquieting world news today is from China. The conflict in that country, which was of local proportions at first, threatens to become nation-wide. Foreigners are imperiled. American citizens and American interests share in this peril. The United States government gladly would maintain an absolutely neutral, non-interventional attitude. But it is feared that this cannot be. Should the passions of the Chinese become inflamed to such extent that attacks should be made upon foreigners, this country would be forced to intervene. There doubtless would be joint action by several great powers, as there was at the time of the Boxer rebellion. China is sorely distressed. It is impossible, it seems, for the old country to quiet fires of political ambition and interprovincial jealousies and hatreds. It is this condition which brought on the present armed conflict. The war is spreading and assuming the magnitude of a civil conflict, involving the whole of China. Defying and evading laws is sewing seeds of anarchy. The educated person without moral balance is a menace to society. The unspeakable crime against women should be a capital offense, in law. The first against the deadly grade crossing is the people's fight. Their's is the menace. A whole lot of boys rated "C" by their teachers, are rated "A-1" by Dunn and Bradstreet. Lots of people try to get out of a bottle what they can get out of doors. If human beings were as loyal and faithful as animals, there would be less suffering in the world. It costs $3,000,000 annually for burials in the United States. The Grim Reaper never slumbers or sleeps. The farmer's dollar is becoming more valuable. And the farmer is getting more of these more valuable dollars. PARAGRAPH By ROBERT QUILL Lots of people try to get out of a bottle what they can get out of doors. ARAGRAPHS By ROBERT QUILLEN The test of the political party is the eating. Too many who "stop smoking" rarely stop buying. The less he has to do when he is there, the faster he goes. Very frequently a man-about-town is a man-about-broke. It may be that the Senate will pose the next President. Let us say. The jack lifts up a car; the dee for it prevents the uplift of a stage. A hick town is a place where people are considered unorthodox they don't pull down the shades 7 p.m. It takes tact to keep a cook and vivid imagination to call her cook. ABE MARTIN AT LEN BEASLEY'S BARDER SHOP WHOS WHO IN THE DAYS NEWS WILBUR J. CARR The recent selection of Wilbur J. Carr to be assistant secretary of state to Charles Evans Hughes is a reward for his efficient service over a period of 22 years. It is another indication that the United States government is swinging into the custom of European countries in training its men for diplomatic service. Carr has been director of the consular service since that position was created in November, 1909. He was chief of the consular bureau from 1902 until appointed director under the new organization several years later. Since the establishment of the bureau of the budget Mr. Carr has been budget officer of the department of state. He was born near Hillsboro, O. Oct. 31, 1870, and educated in the Ohio public school and Kentucky university. After accepting a clerkship in the state department in 1892, Mr. Carr studied law at Georgetown university, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1894. In 1899 he received his master's degree from Columbian university (now George Washington), taking a post-graduate course in international law, political science and diplomacy. SUNSHINE PELLETS DR. W. RED MIXTURE MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1924 COMMENTS of the PRESS What Editors Are Saying CANAL TEN YEARS OLR—Glendale News It has been pointed out that, though we heard much about the tenth anniversary of the beginning of the great war, there was little or nothing said about the decennial of the Panama canal, which was opened to traffic August 14, 1914, and which was the greatest peace time achievement in history. The building of the canal, a constructive work, as against the era of destruction that opened in Europe at the same time, stands as a monument to Theodore Roosevelt, one of the greatest Americans, a much more worthwhile and lasting memorial than leadership in the war could have brought him. The Panama canal carries more tonnage than the Suez, which was opened fifty-five years ago. The total cost of the canal is placed at $275,000,000 and the interest on the bonds is about $12,000,000 annually. The United States pays the government of Panama $250,000 annually for relinquishment of title. Revenue for the first six months of 1924 was $24,000,000. For the last fiscal year the surplus for sinking fund and applying to past deficits is more than $7,500,000, after deducting rental to Panama, interest on bonds and cost of operation. It is likely that showing for the balance of this year will be still gratifying, and it is expected that within the next fifteen years the entire cost of the project will be returned to the treasury of the United States. Is not this a vindication of the foresight and courage and energy of Roosevelt in the face of tremendous obstacles, opposition and ridicule? BRAVERY AND COWARDICE Perfect bravery and thorough cowardice are two extremes which are seldom reached, it was observed by La Rochefoucauld. The space between the two is great, and comprehends all other kinds of courage, between which there is as much difference as between countenances and dispositions, he pointed out. There are some men who expose themselves readily at the commencement of an action, and are disheartened and discouraged by its duration; some are content as soon as they have satisfied their reputation with the world, and do very little beyond this. We see some who are not at all times equally masters of their fears; others suffer themselves to be carried away by general panic; others go to the charge. "We see some who are not at all times equally masters of their fears; others suffer themselves to be carried away by general panics; others go to the charge because they dare not remain in their posts." "We find some in whom an acquaintance with petty danger strengthens their courage, and prepares them to expose themselves to greater ones. "Some are brave when sword in hand, and yet drench the fire of musketry; others are steady under fire and dread the sword." "All these different species of courage concur in this, that night, by augmenting fear and concealing good or bad actions, gives the privilege of being discreet. "There is another species of discretion which is more general, for we never see a man perform as much in an encounter as he might do if he were sure of coming off safe; so that it is evident that fear of death subtracts something from courage." Perfect valor, thought La Rochefoucauld, is to do unwitnessed what we should be capable of doing before all the world. Love of glory, fear of shame, the design of making a fortune, the desire of rendering our lives easy and agreeable, and the envious wish of lowering the fame of others are often the causes of that valor so celebrated in men, says La Rochefoucauld. It should be added: Vanity, shame, and above all, temperament, are often causes of courage in men, and of virtue in women.
