BURBANK REDUCES COST OF DAHLIAS
SANTA ROSA, Calif., Sept. 15. Luther Burbank, who gilds the lily by showing Nature how to improve upon herself, has once more reduced the high cost of living—at least for people who plant dahlia beds.
Heretofore the bulbs necessary for a bed of dahlias have cost anything from a few dollars up. Hereafter, thanks to the new Burbank giant dahlia-flowering zinnia, just about the same effect can be produced for 15 cents.
The new zinnia, larger and more nearly perfect than any at present known to the world, was announced a few days ago by the Santa Rosa plant scientist. He has developed it in a multitude of shades, including crimson, pure white, yellow, old rose, salmon pink, white shaded with lemon, white shaded with orange, and half a dozen different bronzes.
The new flower has already created tremendous interest. Burbank said recently at his Santa Rosa home.
Another of the scientist's late products is a new rainbow corn crosSED with the gigantic Teosinte. It marks the advent of corn as a decorative plant. The new rainbow corn derives its name from the fact that the leaves are striped with many colors. The grain is not superior for food purposes, and the ears are small.

The hearing against Foster was held after complaints had been made that Foster's patrons here had been fleeced of their earnings.
However, Foster took the witness stand and testified that he was not responsible for the losses here in view of the fact that he disposed of his local office at P. P. Childs and B. O. J. Finnegan before the alleged actions complained of took place.
U. S. BUYS TRAIL
TO GRAND CANYON
FLAGSTAFF Ariz. Sept. 15—(INS)—The world famous "bright Angel trail," which leads from the south rim of the Grand canyon of the Colorado to the Colorado river, is to be sold to the federal government, it will learned here today.
Coconino-co., owning the trail, has agreed to turn it over to the government, which will build a highway connecting Old Trail Highway with the canyon.
One trail, a toll road, nets the county about $5,000 annually but turning it over to the government will relieve the county of building 64 miles of road and providing for its maintenance.

The Golden Rule class very pleasantly surprised and showered Mr. and Mrs. Justin Spohn at their home on Western-ave. Miss Eunice Mann cleverly planned the serving of the refreshments which were cake and sherbert. The sherbert dishes were placed in paper plates which were covered with crepe paper petals to look like roses. Candies also were placed in the tissue roses. When the company were seated, the bride and groom at the head of table, a huge rose, made of a hat box, covered with the tissue petals, was placed in front of them. It was found to contain many pretty gifts: The class members present were: Misses Beulah and Margaret Nelson, Eleanor Warren, Milred Bacon, Eunice Mann, Jean McGill, and their teacher, Mrs. G. S. Davis. Special guests were: Mrs. M. S. Berkey, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Porter and Mrs. Charles Chandler.

PRINCE LEAVES FOR RANCH SOON
SYOSSET, N.Y., Sept. 15—His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, busied himself today with a long-deferred task—the writing of innumerable letters and postcards to friends abroad.
To insure execution of this task, the prince rose early. He returned home at 1 a.m., in order that he might not be forced to sleep late and further postpone the dispatch of the letters and cards. For he plans to leave here Thursday for his ranch at High River, Alberta.
The prince disappeared yesterday afternoon after finishing a round at the J. S. Cosden golf course. No member of his staff knew today where he spent the time between 1:30 yesterday and 1 this morning. He told his equerry, Captain A. F. Lascelles, merely that he had had a dinner engagement.
The prince planned to play polo today after finishing his correspondence. Tonight he is seated to attend a dinner at the Port Washington home of Rodman Wanamaker II.
State troopers guarding the Burden estate at Syosset, where the prince is a house guest, twice were forced last night to eject a stranger who told them he was a Canadian war veteran and wanted to see Wales.
The man was halted just inside the gate. He said he had "personal business" with the prince. Later the guards caught him climbing a fence. He was unarmed.
SAYS PRINCE BAD EXAMPLE FOR BOYS
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 15—Criticizing the Prince of Wales as a bad example for American youth because of his all-night dancing parties, the Rev. Robert L. Jackson, Methodist minister, today expressed regret that the visitor "with the eyes of millions directed at him," had not found time to attend church on the Sabbath.

The cost of the completion of which said municipal improvement was estimated at Two Hundred Forty Thousand ($240,000.00) Dollars which said cost was and is too great to be paid out of the ordinary annual income and revenue of said City.
