PAGE FOUR SOCIETY State Officer in East Mrs. F. L. Chaplain, of Orange, second vice president of the State American Legion Auxiliary has arrived in St. Paul to attend the National Convention as delegate from California. She was tendered a farewell reception Monday evening by the County Auxillaries at Orange at which several Anaheim members were guests. A dinner was the opening feature and entertainment followed. Each post was prepared to put on a number which was received with interest. Mrs. Chaplain was presented with a valuable traveling bag from the county auxiliaries. Attending the reception from Anaheim were the Mesdames Louise Oelke, Nellie Webb, Alice Hebson, Hazel Carle, Gladys Prescott, and Miss Frieda Janseu. Surprise Venerable Friend The birthday anniversary of Mrs. Katherine English was the incentive for a surprise party given at the home of Mrs. E. A. Hatfield, 402 E. Sycamore-st, Mrs. English was 77 years old and received many lovely gifts in remembrance of the occasion. Conversation and music was enjoyed during the afternoon hours, and the guests wished Mrs. English many happy returns of the day. Dainty refreshments were served at the close of the afternoon. Guests at the Hatfield home were Mesdames D. W. Hatfield, Nancy Holman, John Hawkins, Los Angeles, Estella Johnston, Ed Marlon, Walter Mickle, Mary Fordyce, Caroline Reidel, and Miss Amanda Domke. Return from Vacation W.R.C. Luncheon Instead of the meeting of the Women's Relief Corps at 2:30 Tuesday, a birthday luncheon will be served at 12 o'clock, with Mrs. Addie McMillen as chairman. A patriotic program will be given after the dinner. All comrades and their wives are given a special invitation to the meeting. Mrs. Ida J. Hughes, who has just returned from the encampment at the Santa Monica pallisades will give a report on the convention. This will be most interesting and prospective members of the Corp will be given a cordial welcome. Hostesses will be the Mesdames L. O. Whalen, Lizzie Kemper, Eva Ida Lake, Mary Clark, H. W. Skinner, Johnson, Wm. Bonksky, Nina Griffith, Alma Pressel, Oldfield, Gusae Johnson, Bialr, C. W. Brumagin, U. S. Amaek, Brown, Meyers, Ludwig and Phillips. W.R.C. Rehearsal Mrs. Ida J. Hughes wishes to impress the importance of W.R.C. drill rehearsal for next Monday night in Pape's hall. The team has been asked to exemplify the work of the order at Santa Ana on Sept. 19, and every member is asked to be in her place at the time and place mentioned. Cleary and son, Jack, accompanied by Mrs. Cleary's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Plant, of Pasadena, returned from a two weeks motor vacation last evening. They visited relatives in San Luis Obispo, dug cemains on Plamo Beach and enjoyed a short time with friends living on a mountain ranch near Paso Robles. The Clearys will go to Pasadena this afternoon for a week-end visit. Pastor Back from North The Reverend and Mrs. G. G. Semid and family are returning today from their three weeks' motor journey to Tacoma, Washington, where they visited Rev. Schmid's parents. A card announcing their return says: "the closer we get to Anaheim the better it looks to us." They started on their return trip to the south Sunday evening, September 7. Rev. Guild Resumes Meetings The Woman's Guild of St. Michael's met yesterday for the first time since summer vacations are over, with Mrs. A. G. H. Bode, 212 South Ohio-st. The ladies moved their chairs to the lawn under the trees where the pleasant breezes of the ideal day carried fragrance from the flowers in the nearby gardens. Industriously sewing, plans for autumn and winter work were discussed with several definite outlines accepted. Later Mrs. Bode served her guests with ice tea and cake, Dean Bode "dropping in" for this feature. It was voted to change the meeting days to the second and fourth Thursdays from Fridays, the next date being Sept. 25. Ted Shipkey, relief man at the local office of the Union Oil Co., left today to re-enter Stanford University. Mrs. Frank L. Glick, of South Anaheim, will arrive home Sunday after a two months' visit with relatives in Indiana. Rev. G. G. Schmidt will arrive in Anaheim lowing a motor trip Wash. Johnson on Nov. 2, when his pleasant duties will concern a class for confirmation. Classes were formed at last Sunday's service and will be conducted each Sunday morning at 10 with special classes by arrangement. LOCALS Mr. and Mrs. Homer Collins of Long Beach passed last evening in Anaheim. Miss Cora Wieseke returned with them and will spend several days as their guest. Miss Katherine Volz will go to Hollywood soon where she has enrolled with the Immaculate Heart College. Mrs. Dan Granada and daughter Phyllis are passing the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Janicke at Long Beach. Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Gaddis passed the day in Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. William Drennon will have as their guests this afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Burden and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Steelhead. They will motor to Orange-co Park and will have a steak dinner this evening. An accident occurred this morning about 8 o'clock at Center and Lemon-ets, when a machine driven by Howard B. Morse, 131 West Chartres-st, bumped two small boys, knocking one of them down, it is said. They were taken to the Anaheim Community hospital, found to be uninjured and were dismissed. Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Bungay and family will pass Sunday in Glendale with Mr. Bungay's brother and family. Mrs. A. G. H. Bode made a flying trip to Los Angeles this morning. Rev. G. G. Schmid and family will arrive in Anaheim today. MATERIALS FROM LOCAL LUMBER CO. The Gibson Lumber Co. of Anaheim supplied all the building material used in the construction of the First Christian church, including all the rough and finished lumber, metal lathe, plaster, cement, and everything except hardware. Their material will bear very closest inspection, and is in a great measure responsible for the fine appearance of the finished building. The interior wood finishing is in driftwood grey and certainly is most handsome. Hardwood has been used in the main auditorium floor, which the firm chose with the greatest care. Mr. H. Lochr, resident manager of the Gibson Lumber Co., is also secretary and treasurer of the large Gibson Lumber corporation lumber yards of California. He feels especial pride in the participation of his firm to so large an extent. SOMETHING NEW IN CHURCH LIGHTS The distinctive type of lighting is an innovation in public buildings. In the auditorium of the First Christian church, in which the Holland Electric Company of Anaheim has installed a series of indirect sectional lights, either brilliant or subdued rays may be used.
