Asserting that permanent prosperity can only be assured in America's agricultural communities by abolition of the one-crop system and declaring that nothing will do more to assure the permanent prosperity of the northwest than the present movement to grow more sugar beets, Charles H. Allen, president of a farmers' sugar company, Defiance, Ohio, addressed the North Dakota Press Ass'n here recently on "The Agricultural Situation." President Allen opposed reduction of the present sugar tariff, claiming that "a slight lowering of the duty on sugar would close American beet sugar factories and thus deprive 100,000 American farmers of a market for $65,000,-000 worth of beets annually, while a slight increase in duty soon would mean erection of enough new factories to supply us with all the sugar we consume. "Of the $380,000,000 we would thus keep at home, over $200,-000,000 would be paid to the farmers annually for beets," continued Allen, who charged that "the Cuban sugar interests seek to reduce the present sugar duty of $1.70 a hundred pounds." "Bugar is nothing but sunshine and rain. In 1920 alone the American people paid $900,000-900 for the sunshine and rain over Cuba, just as if we didn't have any of our own. That's one trouble with American agriculture." Stapleton, Albany eye, ear and nose specialist, who has just returned from a three months' tour of Europe. Three features stand out prominently, Dr. Stapleton says, as significant of the progress that has been made in the last few years. One is the perfecting of the "red free light" by Professor Vogt of the University of Zurich, Switzerland. "Red free light," Dr. Stapleton said, "eliminates all the red in the eye, enabling the doctor to view portions of the living organ, which previously were invisible. It permits an early diagnosis and consequent early treatment, so necessary in arresting the progress of the disease." "Second in importance to the red free light is the invention of a silt-lamp by Professor Gullstrand. This focuses a thin beam of light on the eye, and with the aid of a cornea microscope, portions of the eye are enlarged from 24 to 108 times. Recent studies of refraction by Professor Lindner, at the Polyclinic University, Vienna, have made possible a more thorough understanding of errors in vision and methods of correcting them. It constitutes the third great advancement." An unusual treatment of eye infections which has been successful, Dr. Stapleton says, is the injection of ordinary cow's milk, which has been boiled for five minutes into the patient's body. This produces a rise in temperature and a consequent increase in resisting powers. A. Browne, chief of the Bureau of Chemistry, United States Department of Agriculture. Eggs have been the basis of no less than 600 seizures and prosecutions. Included in this number are cases involving shipments of dried and frozen eggs which are used extensively by commercial bakeries, hotels and restaurants in baking and cooking, but most of the cases were based upon the shipment into interstate commerce of consignments of shell eggs, a part of which were rotten. Interstate shippers of eggs have warned frequently to candle them in order that the rotten eggs might be eliminated, and altho there has been a very great improvement in the quality of eggs shipped into interstate commerce, according to Dr. Browne, the food officials still find it necessary to seize shipments containing some rotten eggs.
