The oldest living resident of this city—a pioneer who has watched the city's growth since 1786—came into the limelight here a few tays ago when a local landscape gardening firm undertook the job of moving an ancient date palm into the garden of an admirer of the old tree. As one of the four oldest living palms in the state, this tree has the distinction of being brut here with a collection of fruit trees ordered from Sinaloa, Mex., by the old mission padres, a fact established by E. Clement Wilson of 105 W. Premont-pl., the purchaser, who has been investigating its history over a period of several years. The palm was brot to Los Angeles by Cornelio Aguila, an early Spanish agriculturist who was commissioned by Father Junipero Serra to make the trip to Mexico to secure fruit trees to be planted in the vicinity of the missions.
