PIONEER PALM MOVED TO GARDEN
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8. The oldest living resident of this city—a pioneer who has watched the city's growth since 1786—came into the limelight here a few tays ago when a local landscape gardening firm undertook the job of moving an ancient date palm into the garden of an admirer of the old tree.
As one of the four oldest living palms in the state, this tree has the distinction of being brut here with a collection of fruit trees ordered from Sinaloa, Mex., by the old mission padres, a fact established by E. Clement Wilson of 105 W. Premont-pl., the purchaser, who has been investigating its history over a period of several years.
The palm was brot to Los Angeles by Cornelio Aguila, an early Spanish agriculturist who was commissioned by Father Junipero Serra to make the trip to Mexico to secure fruit trees to be planted in the vicinity of the missions. Two sister trees of the old palm
TOKIO EXCITED OVER QUAKE SHOCK
TOKIO, Aug. 8. An earthquake shock was felt throughout Tokio last night at 11 o'clock but no damage was reported today.
There was no loss of life.
With the memory of last September's great quake still fresh in their minds the people were thrown into great excitement and many remained up thrue the balance of the night fearing a recurrence of the tremors.
Storms are reported from Kyushu province. Two towns have been partly submerged by heavy rains.
are still growing near the mission at Ventura and a third is in the yard at Ramona's old home at San Diego.
Altho the palm stands over 80 feet high, and weighed over 60,000 pounds, it was moved from the place where it was originally planted for a distance of more than two miles and replanted intact.
The cost for the contract was $1500.

Tom Mix is coming to the Kaiserland theater Saturday for a day run, in a new William western production, "The Buster." This picture is the thirth in which Mr. Fox has tured Tom, and altho the spunds mushy, you will find the western star does not haunt his spurs and chaps and come a gay Lothario to break hearts of the girls.
In fact the hero has to take caution to the winds and kill the Justice of the Peace and lister in order to prevent he he loves from marrying the villain. TO GREET HELEN WITH OPEN ARMS
BERKELEY, Aug. 5.—Helen Wills' home town is preparing a monster welcome against her return from successful conquests at the Olympic games and way points.
The mayor, President W. W. Campbell of the University of California, the half-a dozen persons who have alided in making the 18-year-old girl the tennis sensation of the decade, and hundreds of townspeople who have known her since childhood will all be on hand, according to present arrangements, when Miss Wills' train pulls in.
Tennis loving Berkeley and California generally is enthusiastic today when mention is made of "little poker face," because the belief is general that this state through her is due to hold the women's tennis championship for many years to come.
Dr. C. A. Wills, "Dad," as he is known to Helen and the intimate friends who have followed the meteoric rise of the girl to stardom in sport, frankly shows his pride today as he discusses Miss Wills' prospects.
GREAT DEMAND FOR "CORN PATCH" BABY
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8.—Abandoned by his parents, Los Angeles "corn-patch" baby is not to lack a home.
Almost a score of requests from families in all sections of the city have flooded Policewoman Loretta McPeak for permission to adopt the month-old Spanish babe, found in a corn patch in front of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Duarte.
Crowding with happiness, the chubby little mite of humanity laughed himself into the hearts of a constant stream of visitors to the humble cottage, who hurried forth during the day and pleaded with the juvenile authorities to let them provide the tiny walt with a home.
None of the requests is to be
MISS TALMADGE BACK IN COMEDY
Constance Talmadge
"The Goldfish," which opened this afternoon at the California theatre, is ideally suited to the comedy toucn of Constance Talmadge. It is light and frothy and airy and Miss Talmadge enacts her part with her usual zip and pep.
In this picture, Miss Talmadge has got away from her costume and semi-serious parts to the kind of comedy for which she is famous. It is the story of a flapper who has five proposals, is married four times, is a widow once and who finally remarries her first husband. It is the kind of comedy which has a peculiarly strong appeal to women.
Miss Constance, an imp of mischief, takes the part of Jennie, a Coney Island wildflower, who picks the plano while her husband sings in a cheap variety show. Her metamorphosis into a patrician bothhouse plant who almost becomes a Duchess, affords the comedienne opportunities for
It fact the hero has to throw on to the winds and kidnap justice of the Peace and minin order to prevent the girl lives from marrying the villian. The girl will sigh when Tom into action and finally lands in order to prevent the girl lives from marrying the villian. The girl will sigh when Tom into action and finally lands in order to prevent the girl lives from marrying the villian.
The fact it is Tom's death, it is no fifty-fifty picture, a real 100 per cent sure-fire knockout. One of the kind has made Mix the most populest star of the silver big time acts of vaudeville, edy, "The Two Johns," andenth and last episode of "Theerstocking" complete a nifty bill.

GIVE BOYS PETS
LOS ANGELES, Aug. $—Pets often prevent boys from becoming criminals, according to no less an authority than Judge Harry S. Archibald, of the Juvenile Court.
By furnishing the youth with a healthy outlet for his energies and by keeping him away from evil companions, pets accomplish this object, and are recognized by police authorities as one of their strongest allies in the ceaseless campaign against juvenile crime, Judge Archibald declares.
The views of the jurist were given before the Southern California Rabbit and Pet Stock association.

PASSENGER PLANES YIELD BIG INCOMES

One of the larger planes on the field, owned by a retired farmer, earned $110 for its owner on a recent Sunday, according to O. E. Scott, manager of the Lambert-st Louis Flying Field.
"That particular plane cost its owner $2000," Commander Scott said. "Since he purchased it, the ship has paid for itself twice and is not yet a year old."
Asked whether the owners of the ships carried insurance to protect them against damage to their planes in crashes or collisions, Commander Scott smiled.
"Why carry insurance at almost prohibitive rates," he asked, "when the prices of the different parts of an airplane are now almost as cheap as Ford parts?"
"If you break a wing in landing," Commander Scott explained, "you can get a new one for about $30. Of course, if you fall from a great height, then your ship is totally wrecked—but what do you care then? You're wrecked totally, too, if you happen to be in it at the time."
"However" — and Commander Scott smiled proudly — "there is really little risk in just ordinary flying these days. Thousands of miles have been flown by the planes here, and we have trained scores of student filers in the last 16 months without a single serious mishap."
Early one morning a darky came into a gents' furnishing store and said "Boss, I want to pay a little on that stuff you got for me."
The same afternoon he bounded in again and said he had "a couple more dollars to put down." The merchant remarked, "Business must be pretty good with you, Sam."
Sam responded: "No, boss, I'm just workin' faster."
