BRANCH BANKING BENEFITS TOLD The saving of interest on credit balances due to the fact that checks on San Francisco, may be cleared in Los Angeles, is the real backbone of branch banking. President Adolph Thomas of the Golden State National Bank declared today, explaining his institution's affiliation with the Bank of Italy. The Golden State is permitted full local autonomy, however. Formerly it cost the local bank $1250 per year for a blanket bond covering all losses, including thefts, of money whether in the bank or in transit. This bond amounted to only $25,000. It now costs the Golden State less than $1,000 for a bond of $100,000, ensuring ample protection to depositors. The bond covers securities as well as cash. Industrial and business news developments were uniformly favorable, particularly those emanating from the steel and textile industries. Conditions were thus favorable for more realizing sales of active industrial and railroad stocks and selling pressure in the first three hours was quite heavy. Shortly after the noon period buying orders were seen to be on the increase and prices strengthened, many stocks going forward to higher levels than that of the previous close. Special weakness in isolated stocks at the beginning of the day's session did not have an unfavorable influence on the balance of the market. Atlantic Refining and Pressed Steel Car were the most notable in this group, the Cuyamel Fruit was not long in joining the procession. Atlantic Refining was weak on reports that the directors might vote to reduce or pass the dividend next Monday. The railroad stocks were once again in the background, so price developments were generally constructive. It was reported that further conferences are taking place in the Can Swearingen merger, so progress from this stage is expected to be show. Pittsburg and West Virginia gained a lap on the other merger stocks by selling up $3% points to a new high at $63!. New York Central was active near its recent high and Lackawanna pushed thru to a new high above 133 on further rumors of impending stocks dividend. Money market conditions point to the possibility that the directors of the federal reserve bank of New York might reduce the discount rate at their meeting today, and considerable speculation is going on in Wall Street as to the probable effect of a further reduction on the stocks and band market. The loss was estimated at nearly $500,000. Six box cars on the Sacramento Northern Railroad sidling, power poles and railroad ties were also destroyed by the blaze, crippling Marysville-Colusa traffic. MAN AND DOG IN 'VODVIL' STUNT The California Theater offers a very clever bill of vaudeville for Thursday's entertainment and Groh and Adonis direct from Broadway big time house heads the lineup. Groh is a very interesting performer, inasmuch as he looks like a juvenile of dramatic man, but in reality he is a very clever athlete. Adonis is his dog and constant companion. To watch these artists, both man and dog is a pleasure one seldom gets in this country, as their services are in such demand that theyseldom leave the East Coast. Burton and Dyer present "Clever Comics" just another way of introducing themselves as they really are clever comedians. Smith and Revere offer a "Block" and Tan" act that sparkles with good nature and runs over with big laughs. A pair of real artists .85 Shop Early for Best Selections Silks--mostly one of a kind.
