WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 1924 MANY NEW HOLES IN ATHENS FIELD Athens on the Hill or Rosecrans as the field is officially known showed a lot of new developments this past week. A number of new wells got underway drilling, and included the Associated Oil Co.'s two wells, the Barnsdall Oil Co.'s Rosecrans offset, the Sandberg Petroleum Co., the Standard Oil Co.'s Cowan well and the five new wells started by the Union Oil Co. The Rosecrans field now shows 14 wells drilling (2 new rigs, 2 new wells starting drilling, one producing well, and one new company in the field. Long Beach came up to last week's production output and yielded 169,000 barrel daily. This old field is holding up remarkably well and has truly earned the honor of "Wonder Field" of So. Calif. Among the most important new producers of the week were the 1000 barrel well completed by the Calif. Co-op. Oil Syndicate, the Oceanic Oil Co.'s 400 barrel well, the Petroleum Midway's Harow-Kent 5, a 450 barrel well, the Shell Co.'s Alamitos 13, a 700 barrel producer, and the Tehmescal Oil Co.'s redrill, No. 1 at 200 barrels. The United Oil Co. for a number of months has been making a valiant effort to extend the productive limits of the northwest section of the Long Beach field. The United's test well Bixby No. I went to approximately 5200 miles finding anything promising placed back to 4445 where the was doing 150-200 barrels for several days until water broke in caused the oil production to cease. Work on the United's Bixby was being carried on in a further fort to shut off the water and the well back on commercial production. Baker, of Anaheim pleaded guilty and was fined $50 and Henry Day of Buena Park was found $25 in the police court at Seal Beach by Judge Morrison.
