STRONG ODOR AT
CHEMICAL PLANT
Owing to the very strong fumes coming from the waste product of the Crystal Chemical Co.'s plant last night, the president and secretary of the chamber of commerce visited the manager, Dr. Gustav Reich, this morning.
We are aware of the fact that this odor has been bothering the citizens of Andheim for sometime. Since the purchase of the 40 acres by the Community Industrial Land Co., it has been necessary to pour the airplus waste matter, which was being pumped into large holes on this property, into other holes made for the purpose. A large amount of this waste product was allowed to be put on the right of way of the Union Pacific in order that the lovering of the 40 acres might be continued. Nothing is being pumped into this hole on the Union Pacific property at the present, and it is gradually being evaporated and has evaporated three and one half feet in the past few weeks. This is the body of water that is causing the trouble.
Mr. Wm. W. Chandler, county sanitary inspector of Santh Ann., visits the Chemical Plant every two or three days and has asked Dr. Reich to do everything in his power to eliminate this odor. It is being treated with chloride of lime in order that it may be thoroughly disinfected. By being disinfected, all of the germs detrimental to health and life are destroyed so that no danger in the way of sickness can come from this odor.
It was clearly demonstrated this morning that if this pool was stirred up, it would be almost impossible for anyone to live in that section of the city, so in the presence of the chamber of commerce officials, the Chemical Co. were ordered to place in that hole again today a quantity of this lime. The effect of this chloride of lime lasts about four days, then it is renewed, but at the rate of evaporation, it seems certain that this will be eliminated within the next month.
We wish to say that other manufacturing industries located in this section are not responsible for this odor.
BROOKINS CASE TO
JURY TOMORROW
The last of the testimony in the case of the people against G. E. Brookins and Mrs. Addie Wiley, good looking Alabama girl, accused of a statutory offense in connection with their arrest at Newport Beach in an asserted "love nest" was being taken today in the superior court of Judge F. C. Drumno.
Mrs. Brookins took the stand and told how Mrs. Wiley had entered the peaceful home and disrupted it by her attention to Brookins, according to her version, and finally won the husband away.
Brookins and Mrs. Wiley are being tried the second time on the same charge, the first jury having failed to reach a verdict.
