MAY ENLIST NOW IN NATL GUARD Ray Smith, "Mory" Martenet, and "Doc" Wilhelm have enlistment blanks for the Anaheim company of the 163rd Reg., Calif. National Guard. Young Anaheimers desirous of enjoying the pay and other advantages of the service would do well to see one of the above three men for details. Smith, who has seen considerable army service as a lieutenant, and is now in the officers' reserve corps, may become commander of the Anaheim company. The national guard now is a unit of the regular army, and guardsmen draw the same pay for the time they spend in drill, or in the 30 days annual encampment. Anaheim's quota of seven for the two weeks at the citizens military training camp at Del Mute in July is not yet filled, it was stated today. Orange-co.'s quota is 27 and that many youths are offered an unusually profitable experience. TWO YOUNG GIRLS CHARGE ASSAULT LOS ANGELES, May 19. Halloway and Tom Smith of the Whittier club were also guests. The meeting was closed with a rousing song. JACOBS The "grandmother" of the Women's International League for Peace, Dr. Aletta H. Jacobs of Holland is one of the internationally famous women now in this country for gatherings of peace organizations and to carry a plea for peace through the country. It was the Dutch women's rebellion against war that made Dr. Jacobs, Holland's first woman physician, the real founder of the league. In the summer of 1914, horrified by the bloodshed, she made up her mind that the time had come for women to put an end to it. She sent out an appeal to their organizations thru Europe. As groups they did not respond favorably; but from all sides individuals wrote signifying their willingness to aid her cause. At a preliminary meeting held in February, 1915, it was decided to form the league and to call its first congress for April 28 of the same year; Jane Addams was nominated for president and accepted the office. In spite of Lloyd George's opposition to the congress, and his determination to keep the "Peaceties" out of Holland, 14 nations were represented and the movement for international peace was not only born but baptized. Dr. Jacobs and Miss Addams visited the bolligerent countries of Europe and presented the premier and minister of foreign affairs of each with the resolutions of the congress. At a later date Dr. Jacobs was sent unofficially by her government to seek President Wilson's co-operation in bringing an end to the war. In 1920 she urged a revision of the peace treaties and has since been pleading that local organizations make a broad publicity gamble. the aftermath of an alleged "night of horror," Barnadette Hanley, 21, and Thelma Walsing-han, 17, appeared at the district attorney's office today and sought assault complaints against three men, one said to be Martin Ryan, a film director, who was alleged to have attacked them.
