DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS
An unthankful man not only seems to steal God's gifts, but he robs himself of their best sweetness.—Ancient Proverb.
WORLD COURT PLANS ARE MULTIPLYING
Plans for the leadership or participation of the United States in some form of association of nations for the fostering of international justice and for the promotion of world peace are proposed with frequency. The latest is by Senator Lodge, of Massachusetts, Republican leader in the Senate and chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. Mr. Lodge's plan would divorce the United States completely from the League of Nations and would provide for an international conference at The Hague to form a world court.
The significance of the frequent proposals to bring about some kind of amalgamating of the nations to preserve just peace is, that the masses of civilized mankind are thinking deeply of this desideratum. Statesmen in this and other civilized lands sense this trend of thought among the people and the plans evolved are in response to public sentiment. Plan after plan doubtless will be proposed before this country strikes its stride, definitely accepts some specific formula, and then moves vigorously for its adoption by other powers. It is encouraging, therefore, that the subject should be kept before the people and that proposals should be put forth frequently. This denotes lively interest and where there is quickened interest there is sure co be constructive action eventually.
COMPETITION AND PUBLICITY
The world has been turned topsy-turvy in the last ten years, possibly the war is responsible, possibly not. It used to be that the man with learning could command the best job and the highest wages. Now the mechanic earns as much or more than the man who works with his brain. It used to be that sheer merit determined the status of a man in the working world. Now one may have ability, experience and all the qualifications for the job but unless he has a good pair of lungs to blow he own horn he sees others pass him in the race.
There are so many people wanting to do the same thing.

There are so many people wanting to do the same thing, so many after the same berth, competition is growing so constantly in intensity, that the man who is modest and retiring and prefers to show rather than to tell what he can do loses out. In this age of publicity and competition it is not so much what can you do as have you the faculty and the facilities for getting your name before the public? It is not so much how hard can you work as how loud can you "holler?"

MORNING
The lark now leaves his nest,
And climbing shakes his wings.
He takes your window for east,
And to implore your light sings;
Awake, awake, the morn never rise
Till she can dress her beauty your eyes.
The merchant bows unto the man's star,
The ploughman from the his season takes;
But still the lover wonders they are,
Who look for day before mistress wakes;
Awake, awake, break through your vells of lawn!
Then draw your curtains and gin the dawn.

DR. NICHOLAS MURRAY
BUTLER
A possibility of Dr. Nicholah Murray Butler being drawn into the list of vice-president possibilities who will be suggested to the Republican national convention is seen in the recent stand the president of Columbia University took on the prohibition question at a recent dinner speech in New York.
Butler denounced the prohibition amendment and the results of prohibition enforcement.
It is pointed out by some that a well known man who is known to be a bit liberal in his views on prohibition might make an acceptable running mate for Coolidge, conservative New Englander.
Butler is not a newcomer in the vice-presidential possibility circles. When James S. Sherman died in October, 1912, just before election, having then won the Republican vice-presidential nomination, the Republican electors were free to vote for whom they pleased. Several of the electors of western states voted for Dr. Butler. In the Republican national convention of 1920 he was the "favorite son" candidate of New York and received 69 1-2 votes for president.
He was born and educated in the U.S. but took advanced courses in Berlin and Paris. He has been president of Columbia since 1902.

What Editors Are Saying
HELP TO SPREAD JOY—Glendale News
An association of neighborhood in every southern California community is one of the greatest needs of the day. The country is becoming so populous that without a recreation of the friendly spirit the residents of the "small towns" back east are going to dread their trip to the coast and many will find it pleasant to rest here.
Community service, in its way, tries to fill the bill; clubs are very good, but to many of the country folk there is nothing more than a back-fence visit desired to cheer them along life's way.
So it is sound advice to all the residents of Southern California to get acquainted with your neighbors—otherwise you may not have them long. Make them feel that you actually take an interest in them. Discuss the old days "back east", invite them over to your house to hear the radio, or "have them in" some evening for dinner.
In other words, be hospitable and spread joy. It pays big dividends. Try it and see!
