KEATON KOMEDY AND GIFT NIGHT
"The most original comedy ever made," is the promise of Buster Keaton, the Metro star, for his third feature length picture, "Sherlock, Jr." at the California theatre. Buster is said to have created the most amusing and, at the same time, the most refreshing conceit in the history of the film industry—a "nut" comedy that really makes sense.
Buster, as a projection booth man in a small-town movie theatre, has his troubles with the mahlops and the films. After hours, of course, he does other odd jobs around the theatre, even to sweeping out. He is indeed a "tough" life.
And the course of love falls to run smooth. Buster loves pretty Kathryn, but the wiles of the town's best dresser are winning the girl away from the poor youth. This is brought to a culmination when the villain plants the pawn ticket for a stolen watch on him and then "finds" it while Buster is at the girl's home.
This is all the more disconcerting because Buster had taken up a correspondence school course in detecting, and this brought his downfall, since he suggested searching everybody—including himself.
There are other features of importance on this wonder bill: "The Adventures in the Far North."
"Money to Burn" (Tel. Series, No. 3), California News Flashes and the gift! Among the many gifts that will be given away are a Dunn fountain penn, value $7.50; perfume, value $3.50 from Hering's drug store; a rope of pearls, value $25, and gent's signet ring, value $13, from the Jewel Box. Anabelm Paint and Paper Co. donates a Johnson waxing set, value $3.50, and a wall paper order, value $4.50; Lee's Service Station gives two 25-gallon orders of gas.
LAUGHS GALORE IN "TRY AND GET IT"
You will surely enjoy a good, hearty laugh if you go to see "Try and Get It," which will be shown at the United Theater tonight and tomorrow. We all enjoy a real good comedy, one that is full of laughs from start to finish. Here it is so be sure to see it or you will miss a real treat.
Bryant Washburn, the star, is sent to collect a bill that is a standing joke. The one against whom it is charged thinks he has paid it and naturally refuses to consider doing so again.
The collector has the time of his young and innocent life trying to get the money. He eventually does so, wins the daughter of the man and gets a job as general manager. Billie Dove plays the role of the daughter.

Another popular delusion is the belief that the man who married a beautiful fool would trade her that neglect of the navy and railway to provide it with adequate fuel reserves had so weakened that branch of the national defense that the advantages gained by the Washington arms conference had been thrown away and that the ratio of power, instead of being America 5, England 5, Japan 3, was, in fact, England 5, Japan 3, America 1.
Shearer's statement grew out of his challenge that the figures on stored oil given out by Curtis D. Wilbur, secretary of the navy, were misleading, and he pointed to the report of the special oil conservation commission to the president as further substantiation of his assertion that, with the exception of 1,500,000 barrels stored in Hawaii, the navy has no oil in reserve.
Not alone upon the lack of an adequate fuel oil reserve does Shearer base his assertion that the treaty ratio has fallen to 5—3—1 with America 1. He says the American fleet is outnumbered and outgunned by both the British and the Japanese. He says the British have 19 naval bases, the Japanese many, the number of them secret, and that the U.S. has none.
He says that compared with American the British are 5 to 1 in light cruiser strength and the Japanese 3-1-3 to 1. He says Japan has 25 fleet submarine boats, England 17, and the United States six.
He says the Atlantic fleet is out of commission because the boilers of four capital ships need repairing and there is no money to do the work. Finally, he says that all naval experts asked congress to provide a naval base at Alameda, Calif., politicians and real estate interests "put over" Mare Island, Calif., which is a shipyard 70 years old, 20 miles inland, and with such shallow water that at low tide some capital ships would rest on the mud.
All these things, Mr. Shearer declares, are common talk among naval officers.
"The Washington conference," Mr. Shearer said, "established a naval ratio of five-five-three; England five, America five, Japan three. This was considered a victory for the United States because it marked the end of the two power standard England had maintained for a century and it brought the United States on a level with her and gave us at the same time a marked superiority over Japan. But whatever advantages might have been ours under that treaty have been thrown away. Today the five-five-three ratio exists on paper only. In reality it is five three-one, America being one."
