EXPECT COOLIDGE TO CARRY OREGON PORTLAND, Ore., May 16.—A fight for "third party" supremacy in Oregon politics between the Ku Klux Klan and the Federation of Patriotic Societies was expected to be somewhat settled today as voters went to the polls in the state preferential primary election. The two organizations—old opponents in the bitter religious-political election of 1922 in Oregon—are at loggerheads, fighting for the upper hand. Each has placed tickets in the field and the endorsement of a candidate by one organization has usually been countered by his opponent receiving the endorsement of the other group. The klan has centered its fight in attempting to defeat Congressman N. J. Sinnott with George T. Cochran, the religious issue being raised. Calvin Coolidge is assured, according to political observers, a large majority of Republican votes over Senator Hiram Johnson and William G. McAdoo is unopposed for Democratic favor for president. Senator Charles L. McNary is the favorite to win the renomination on the Republican ticket over Mayor George L. Baker of Portland and K. K. Kuble, speaker of the house of representatives. State Senator W. H. Strayer and Milton A. Miller are the leading Democratic candidates. A three cornered fight is on between M. E. Crumpacker, Franklin Korell and Arthur Moulton for the Republican nomination for congressman from the third district.
