YELLOW COSTUME FOR SPORT WEAR RIVALS DANDELIO When the dandelion blooms and the spring sun is warm and bright one loses interest in formal clothes and thinks only of something suitable for out-of-door wear. This yellow flannel sport costume with white linen collar and cuffs and white pearl buttons invals the dandelion in color and seasonableness. Mr. and Mrs. Franklin C. H. Lee. FASCINATING CLOTHES STILL FEATURE BLACK Black still continues to be milady's favorite color. She may brighten it up in various ways and desert it entirely for a time in favor of gay colors, but she invariably returns to it and feels distinguished in wearing it. The coat on the left is of black satin with sable dyed squirrel collar and banding. The dinner gown in the center is of black chiffon but is lightened with bright colored beads. A black lace hat is worn with this costume. A Japanese lounging coat of black silk (shown on the right) has gorgeous embroidery in red and orange blossoms. DISCOVERY OF PETRIFIED FOREST IN DESERT IS INTERESTING SCIENTISTS "The Standing Monarch," one of the trees in the petrified forest in the Mojave Desert, California. International attention among geologists is focused on a petrified forest discovered in the Mojave Desert, in California, in a region herefore unexplored by scientists. One of the most notable things found in the forest is what has been named "the Standing Monarch," eight feet high, a petrified tree stump which is merely a shell full of mud and lava, the remains of a once giant tree, sawed off by the elements in the course of countless centuries. No estimate of the age of the forest has been made. Petrified forests have been found in several sections of the globe, but this latest discovery is expected to add a new chapter to evolutionary geology. DIVER SALE The sinking of the ruining schooner "Little Fred master," in Portsmouth, harbor, did not end the federal agents to seize the cargo on board. WOMEN WORK, NOT FOR MORE COIN, BUT FOR THRILL OF STANDING ALONE Sada Cowan, Thousands of women who do not need to work are working. Why? The answer, says Sada Cowan, who has achieved prominence as a writer of original stories, adaptions and titles for photoplays, is "the desire for independence." Not, she explains, merely financial independence. "Women are working because they want to have the power that comes with standing alone. The urge to work lies in the love of it. The woman who succeeds does not look forward to a life of ease after she has accumulated a certain amount, because the urge to do is too strong within her, and she realizes that life is too uninteresting without work. Many men succumb to this delusion, but women never do," she says. The United States may have a new national park shortly. Cooperation of the government in the movement to make Isle Royale, in Lake Superior, public domain is believed assured by the action of the secretary of the interior. Hubert Work, in ordering all government owned land on the island withdrawn from entry. The Island Conner Co., is willing to make a gift of the 45,000 acres of land not owned by the state and national governments. The national park service believes Isle Royale offers a long desired opportunity to establish really great national playground and game refuge east of the Mississippi. There is now only one national park east of the river. The island is practically the last large area of virgin territory in the country.
