EDITORIAL AND FEATURES An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday. Paul V. Hester Editor and Publisher DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS I cannot read His future plan, But this I know— I have the smiling of His face, And all the refuge of His grace, While here below. John Parker. MANY VISITORS HERE THIS WINTER Visitors have come to this Southland in vast numbers, this winter. It is estimated that the record has been broken for numbers coming this season, as compared with past seasons. The influx has been by railroad train and by automobile. The latter method of transcontinental travel is becoming quite popular. Machines by hundreds and by thousands are in this section from other states. If one notes the license plates of machines one passes on streets and highways, one sees automobiles from all over the country. Indeed Southern California today is much like a congress of all sections of the United States. It has been and is an ideal winter for tourists. Climatic conditions, while not at all favorable to Californians because of the shortage of rainfall, have been and are delightful for visitors. There has been and is abundance of sunshine and the weather is marked by summer balminness. It is ideal for automobiling and sightseeing. This section continues to grow in favor with a constantly widening circle of friends and admirers of Southern California. Many come here, year after year, and eventually bring relatives or friends, and thus swell the numbers of desirable and welcome visitors. Good citizenship does not shirk its responsibilities. of the shortage of rainfall, have been and are delightful for visitors. This section continues to grow in favor with a constantly widening circle of friends and admirers of Southern California. Many come here, year after year, and eventually bring relatives or friends, and thus swell the numbers of desirable and welcome visitors. Good citizenship does not shirk its responsibilities. There is need of conscience and honor in handling the public domain and its resources. California cities and towns are noted far and wide for their beauty. Beautifying is a community asset worth dollars and cents—and also worth far more than dollars and cents. DENBY'S RESIGNATION INEVITABLE Resignation of Secretary of the Navy Denby was inevitable. It only was a question of time when it would come. This action does not end the proceedings in the Teapot Dome oil scandal so far as Mr. Denby is concerned. The investigation as to his connection therewith will proceed, and Mr. Denby has his recourse to legal defense. The resignation does not necessarily mean confession of guilt on the part of Mr. Denby. In truth, he continues to protest his innocence and President Coolidge, while accepting the resignation, expresses confidence in Mr. Denby's probity. The resignation may be viewed as being more of a political nature than otherwise. Mr. Denby has been urged to resign so as not to embarrass the candidacy of President Coolidge and not to hamper the Republican party in the national campaign. Attorney General Daugherty probably will be induced to resign for the same reason. Meanwhile, public judgment as Coolidge is hastening preparations for beginning of legal affecting public men accused should await the facts. President proceedings on the part of the special counsel he has appointed, and which have been appointed by the Senate. If there are to be criminal prosecutions, the accused will have their day in court. Then it will be proper to pass judgment, in the light of legal proof. Baseball will vie with politics for public favor this year. Teapot Dome oil will not tranquilize the troubled waters of politics, this year. Integrity of public officials at Washington and elsewhere must be above question. Public sentiment and applied good citizenship should be corrective as to this. If you haven't time to bother with your boy, somebody of rather questionable character has. The winter resorts have delightful golf courses for those who don't mind playing in mittens. The ultra-conservatives in England are beginning to fear their worst hopes won't be realized. There is one nice thing about plain walking. You don't have to cool your heels for two hours waiting for others to tee off. Washing your dirty linen in public means that you are a laundress or an author. Somehow, affections seem more easily alienated in circles where incomes are above $25,000 a year. Dear lady, it may be brutal to shoot little rabbits; but sealskin coats must be provided in some way. Well, you can't blame metropolitans for failing to be polite. Nobody likes to be called a darned helk. Ever' boy hain't privileged t' go t' college, but ther's no reason why most any boy, in years t' come, can't look back on his good ole saxophone days. Allus wait fer th' second thought. DINNER STORIES Persons who suffer from tobacco moochers will appreciate this one: A young fellow who was an inveterate cigarette smoker went to the country for a vacation. Reaching the small town in early morning he wanted a smoke, but there was no store open. He saw a boy smoking cigarettes and approached him, saying: "Say, boy, have you got another cigarette?" "No, sir," said the boy, "but I've got the makings." "All right," the city chap said. "But I can't roll them very well. Will you fix one for me?" "Sure," said the boy. "Don't believe I've got a match," said the man, and he searched his pockets. The boy handed him a match. "Say," the boy said, "you ain't got anything but the habit, have you?" "Look here," began the youth, as he entered a butter's shop and displayed two lovely-looking black-and-blue eyes, "you have fresh beef for sale?" "I have," responded the butch. "And fresh beef is good for black eyes, is it not?" "It is." "Very well. I have the eyes, you have the beef. Do you think you can sell me a pound or so without asking how I got ornamented?" "I'll do my best, sir." The butcher cut off the meat three places in all the one official said today. Ray Ewry could be to win both jumps when we always had two omen almost as good. Passed on, but his plight taken by the Adams and Benu. Somehow Europeans showed no the standing jumps, tried hard to develop. "It was the same pound weight in which Grath, Pay Ryanfl P and others were supposed been declared off the met at Paris the McDonald and McDonald would have scored be hard put to score other weight events, fact that they are gone in years." According to this international federation these events on the lacked general interest fair nough to admit some truth in the state ever, he also intima same holds true of shooting and other that now hold place gram. Well, you can't blame metropolitans for failing to be polite. Nobody likes to be called a darned hick. The only thing that prevents the formation of a third party is the conviction that it would finish that way. The most logical argument against tax-free securities is the fact that the other fellow has them. There seems to be an unwritten law that upholstered chairs mustn't get comfortable until the tapestry wears ragged. History mentions very few people that became great as a result of worry about the servant problem. There is one fine thing about fighting for ocean freight. We can do it without boasting that God is with us. The discovery that her husband is afraid of her is just as painful as the earlier discovery that there is no Santa Claus. Almost every girl reaches an age when she develops pimple and the conviction that her parents don't understand her. SUPREMACY IS THREATENED By DAVID WALSH International News Sports Editor. NEW YORK, Feb. 21.—Gradual, though steady, improvement in the class of European athletics and the elimination of certain events in which the United States happened to be particularly gifted, was attributed by A. A. U. officials today as the answer to the fact that America's Olympic supremacy, hitherto perennial, is threatened at Paris. The improvement is healthful, they say, and as such, finds favor here, but they make no secret of the fact that the elimination of the events referred to caused an acute twinge between the shoulderblades. The events so affected were the standing high and broad jumps and the 56-pound weight. They were the occasion for a blanket clean-up for the Americans until the 1920 games at Antwerp, when they were read out of the Olympic program by the international federation. "Before that it was not unusual for Americans to take the first three places in all three events," one official said today. Ray Ewry could be relied upon to win both jumps with ease and we always had two or three other men almost as good. Later Ewry passed on, but his place was ably taken by the Adams boys—Platt and Benu. Somehow or other the Europeans showed no aptitude for the standing jumps, although they tried hard to develop good men. "It was the same with the 56-pound weight in which Matt McGrath, Pay Ryanf Pat McDonald and others were supreme. It has been declared off the books for the met at Paris this year and McGrath, who would have scored heavily, will be hard put to score at all in the other weight events, owing to the fact that they are getting along in years." According to this man, the international federation eliminated these events on the plea that they lacked general interest and he is fair nough to admit that there is some truth in the statement. However, he also intimates that the same holds true of archery, rifle shooting and other competitions that now hold place on the program. FARM POVERTY LAID TO POOR METHODS LONDON, Feb. 21—Antiquated methods of production and distribution are keeping British farmers poor, according to the report of a government committee to study farm conditions. Cooperative marketing was urged in the report as the remedy for the farmers' complaint that the prices they received and the price the consumers paid were too divergent. Standardization of products also was advocated in the report. SUES TO COLLECT NOTE A foreclosure suit, involving Anaheim property, was on file today in the Superior court. Allie Eckert seeking judgment on a $1500 note against the Anaheim Land syndicate and a group of defendants who were included in the action because of supposed claims to the property. The land syndicate is now defunct, it is said. Among the defendants are Bismarck von Wedelstaedt, Eleanor Tustin von Wedelstaedt, Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Benchley, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Too many individuals think that because they are good merchants, good professional men, good family men or good ranchers, that they are good citizens, but no man is really a good citizen who does not do his part in securing good government by taking thought and action in connection with the government which guarantees to him "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." This is not my government, nor your government, but our government, and it takes all of us to make it representative, and any man who neglects to exercise his franchise to the best of his ability falls in the performance of his most important civic duty. CLASSICS OF HUMOR "THE TWINS," By Henry Sambrooke Leigh In form and feature, face and limb, I grew so like my brother. That folks got taking me for him, And each for one another. It puzzled all our kith and kin, It reached a fearful pitch; For one of us was born a twin, Yet not a soul knew which. One day, to make the matter worse, Before our names were fixed, As we were being washed by nurse, We got completely mixed; And thus, you see, by fate's decree, Or rather nurse's whim, My brother John got christened And I got christened him. The fatal likeness even dogged My footseps when at school, And I was always being flogged, For John turned out a fool, I put this question, fruitlessly, To every one I knew: "What would you do, if you were me? To prove that you were you?" Our close resemblance turned the tide Of my domestic life, For somehow, my intended bride Became my brother's wife. In fact, year after year, the same Absurd mistakes went on, And when I died, the neighbors came And buried brother John. A STUDY IN CONTRASTS A. went over the top one gray morning in October, 1918. When he came back to his country he was minus an arm. The grateful country instructed him in the art of basket-weaving. B. sat in an automobile a half mile from a hotel where his comrades were attempting to kidnap a man set up as a symbol of hate in the country from which he had fled while one of the comrades was killed and the other wounded. Some months later B returned to his country in a stateroom deluxe and was proclaimed a patriotic hero.
