GOOD RADIO SET, WHAT FINER GIFT? The Christmas spirit is abroad. Most every one is busy shopping for presents for their families, relatives and friends. Thousands of dollars are spent every year on useless Christmas presents, cheap merchandise that may look nice for a short time and then be thrown aside and forgotten. If some of this money would be spent on gifts that could be enjoyed and used the year around it would mean that more people would be made happier and the spirit of Christmas would be more lasting, says A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot. A radio set is an ideal gift and is something that will bring lasting enjoyment to everyone in the household. The new improved sets are so efficient and simple to operate that anyone can learn in a few minutes to tune them in. Of course the Christmas rush is on and there is a shortage on radio equipment so we would advise that Radio sets be ordered now. TIRE SHOPS NOW 'PRAYING FOR RAIN' A good heavy rainstorm would make all the difference in the world now in the trade of the tire shops, says S. R. Walter of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works, Walter, who distributes the Kelly Springfield exclusively here, and also carries the United States and other standard as well as cheaper makes of tire, is getting his share of the business, but is suffering from the "put it off" habit of “Grandaddy” Runs Into Some Bad Roads Mastering deserts, mountains and mud, Grandaddy Studebaker is steadily making its way East to arrive at New York in January for the Automobile show, says Harry D. Riley. When the old 1919 Veteran with a record of having traveled over 475,000 miles left Los Angeles, many motorists who are not conversant with Studebaker construction predicted that the Mojave desert would be the Waterloo of the car and that it would never be able to negotiate the outlaw stretch of road between Barstow and Needles without assistance. Instead of taking all day, as is customary for the transcontinental tourists, Grandaddy left Barstow after nine in the morning, dallied along the road as far as Daggett to have its picture filmed for the movies and then got underway at nearly 11 o'clock for the run of 140 miles remaining and made Needles for dinner that night. When the car crossed the state line at Topoc on the bank of the Colorado river, a better road was encountered and it was not until Soligman was reached that the going got rough again. Over the top of the transcontinental divide near Flagstaff the Firestone treads left their imprints in the first snow encountered. In New Mexico the road was almost obliterated by cloudbursts last summer and repairs have not been completed. The Indians were blamed for the road condition as they had hardly finished their snake dance, which is their annual rain prayer, when the heavy hours of steady plugging threw the snow and slush of Kansas roads, but it was in Missouri the stretch of road between Kansas City and St. Louis that stamina of the car was tested. Now that the car is well on way past St. Louis there is no discomfort anticipated from roads. The car will zig-zag from one eastern city to another, giving the public an opportunity see the Studebaker which has complained neary half a mile of travel before startling its journey to the New York shi with the Studebaker Hall of Fres its final objective. Here she will be placed in a position honor with other famous vehicles such as the carriages of Presidio Lincoln, General Grant, Gene Lafayette and some ancient Studebaker carriages and the original prairie schooner that John Stu baker built and travelled in California. —Shop Early— COMPLETION OF ROAD URGE (Continued from page one) city in the famous Pahaw Valley and among its points of interest is the first cajon building Utah, then the State of Desert erced some 71 years ago. The plan of making the Arrowhead Trail a continuous improv highway and shortening the distance between So. Calif. and S Lake has been in progress. A good heavy rainstorm would make all the difference in the world now in the trade of the tire shop, says S. R. Walter of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works. Walter, who distributes the Kelly Springfield exclusively here, and also carries the United States and other standard as well as cheaper makes of tire, is getting his share of the business, but is suffering from the "put it off" habit of car owners. There was once a colored gentleman who had a roof to repair. He used to say he couldn't do the work when a rain was in progress, while on bright days he insisted it wasn't necessary. Don't be like that gentleman of color, Walter advises. Taggart Garage Repainted, Repaired The showroom of the Frank P. Taggart Co.'s big garage on W. Center st. looks like a different place now, with its new coats of buff color paint, repairs and Christmas decorations. The decorations consist of long streamers in red and green, stretching from wall to wall. Below them stand a few of the best-looking models of the Chevrolet, decoration enough in themselves, says the firm. In New Mexico the road was almost obliterated by cloudbursts last summer and repairs have not been completed. The Indians were blamed for the road condition as they had hardly finished their snake dance, which is their annual rain prayer, when the heavens opened and cloudbursts swept the country, taking most of the road with it. Over the summit of Raten pass the Studebaker Veteran found comparatively easy going. While the grade ascends to 8,790 feet above sea level Grandaddy made a good part of the pull on high gear and found intermediate necessary only where the sharp turns necessitated slower speeds. A slight detour off the Santa Fe Trail was made to reach Pueblo, Colo., and the Veteran of mileage was joined in a parade with another notable Studebaker which demonstrated its speed and stamina this year when it won the heavy car class in the Annual Pikes Hill climb. After Colorado came the Kansas trails, with day after day of mud and slush. Two hundred and thirty-five miles required nine encountered and it was not until Soligman was reached that the going got rough again. CAR CALLED IDEAL GIFT TO FAMILY If you want to give your family a gift that they will appreciate for years to come, one that is beautiful and of wide utility, there's nothing more suitable than a Willys-Knight or Overland car, says W. R. Schanhals, ideal distributor. Both of them are good cars, one is merely bigger than the other. The engine which improves with use is on all seven models of the Willys-Knight. Its sleeve-valve motor works better after 15,000 miles' service than after 500 miles. There are no springs to wear out, no noisy cams, no push rods. When Europe needed a better engine, it came to America to get it, and nearly all the famous racing cars have the Willys-Knight motor. The Overland gives a sensation of power extraordinary in a small car. The larger new engine enables one to climb anything. Recently one Overland drew another up one of the very steepest hills in Los Angeles. Both cars are as handsome outside as they are mechanically efficient inside.
