EDISON CO. WILL
SPEND $26,000,000
Approving the 1924 budget authorizing $26,288,000, the board of directors of the So. Calif. Edison Co. have arranged the financing of the company's electric development construction and extension program for the ensuing year, which brings the amount expended for this purpose up to $118,000,000 since the Armistice. This year's budget is the largest single annual appropriation ever made for any purpose in the state, and is said to be one of the largest ever made in the United States. It is nearly twice as much as the annual appropriation for the government reclamation service, and approaches the maximum annual appropriation for the construction of the Panama Canal. This is part of the $375,000,000, financing of the Edison Big Creek-San Joaquin river project. It includes the 1924 expenditures for transmission and distribution lines and additional apparatus for meeting the demands of the city of Los Angeles and 312 cities, towns and intervening rural communities in which the Edison company supplies electricity for light, heat, manufacture, irrigation and transportation.
Jugo-Slavia has expressed a desire to pay what she owes Uncle Sam. This kind of native simplicity must seem very amusing to France.

Xmas Suggestions
Galore at Big Shop
With the interest of the average family centered around their automobile, it is going to be an exceedingly easy task for the Xmas shopper to decide upon a suitable and appreciative gift this year, says Manager Brown of the Western Auto Supply store.
This Christmas has again taken a decidedly automotive atmosphere, and from all appearances will continue to do so, unchecked for years to come. The slogan of last year, "Something for the car for Christmas," is again brought forward this season.
So marked is the interest in automobile accessories and equipment for Christmas presents that it is certain the family tree will be bending with articles for car owners that will increase their comfort and enjoyment in motoring.
With plenty of room and a full stock of goods to care for the Christmas shopper, and with hundreds of new suggestions for suitable presents, the Western Auto Supply Co. is planning on a huge holiday session.
There is such an infinite variety of articles from which to select, that the shopping tour is made expedient and complete, for within their scope are to be found things that qualify for utility, convenience, comfort, economy and beauty. The task of selecting a gift is simple, for every motorist knows just what his car owner friend would appreciate for his machine.
Many of the Christmas shoppers, who are not car owners, are showing their appreciation to their friends, who have taken them in their cars throughout the summer, by giving them "Something for their car." It is indeed an appropriate way to show their appreciation.

WHY OF GRAY'S POWER IS SHOWN
Automobile men have been puzzled by the fact that the Gray car seems to develop power in excess of its bore and stroke and yet has established an enviable reputation for gasoline economy. "How they ask themselves, 'Is it possible for this car to develop greater power and yet consume less gasoline than has ever been known before?'
F. F. Beall, vice president of the Gray Motor Corp., explains how this accomplishment has been achieved. "In any piece of machinery," said Mr. Beall, "much of the power is necessarily lost in overcoming friction. It is impossible to develop any motor car which is absolutely without friction, but we have gone a long way toward it and therein lies the secret of the great power and surprising economy in the Gray."
"First, Ignition. The development of hot spark with timing gears so exactly machined that the spark comes absolutely right every time, is one point.
"Second, carburetion. We have a carburetor which is thoroughly efficient in breaking up the low-grade gasoline of today, mixing it with air and spraying it into the cylinders in proper quantities and in proper proportions.
"Third, manifolding. A short, properly designed manifold with smooth, easy curves which accelerate the flow of gasoline spray into the cylinders makes for economy and increased power. From the exhaust manifold must be tak-

"Third, manifolding. A short, properly designed manifold with smooth, easy curves which accelerate the flow of gasoline spray into the cylinders makes for economy and increased power. From the exhaust manifold must be taken superheated air to aid in proper carburetion. A properly placed hot spot makes easy starting and avoids waste of gasoline.
"Fourth, straight line drive. Universals, although necessary in the modern automobile, waste power. The nearer to a straight line drive that it is possible to come, the less waste of power there is.
"Fifth, bearings. I have named this point last but as any layman knows it is not by any means the least. Large bearing surfaces in the motor and correctly designed ball or roller bearing at proper points throughout the car reduce friction to the minimum. For example, the thrust block, where the propeller shaft drives the rear axle of the Gray, has an unusually large and, we believe, well-designed roller bearing.
"The fact that friction has been reduced almost to the minimum is evident when you see how easily a Gray can be pushed. A five-year-old child can roll a touring car along a level pavement.
"Undoubtedly the attention given to these five points is responsible for the official world's record of 33.8 miles per gallon, established by the Cray Economy Car in its Cross County Run under the sanction of the American Automobile Association."
West Brothers, local dealers will be pleased at any time to explain this and other points where in the Gray is better.
