Saturday, October 20, 1923 NEED GOOD BATTERY TO GET FAR POINTS A good deal of interest and no little friendly competition is developing among the local radio operators. It is a "catch-as-catch-can" contest to see who is able to get the greatest number, and the far-thesest distant, broadcasting stations, says A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot. Tacked on the wall above or near the receiving set of almost any of our local radio "fans" you will find a large map of the United States literally dotted with broadcasting stations checked off as they have been caught by the individual's radio set. It is a matter of considerable pride on the part of each radio operator to get one or more new stations every evening. Some of these maps are so dotted with checks and crosses or other marks as to render them practically useless for any other purpose. Mr. Bevillard, who is local Willard battery dealer, has made an interesting investigation along these lines. Having sold a number of radio batteries to owners of some of the larger sets, and having advised a number of radio enthusiasts in the building of sets, he was curious as to how these sets compared with others. "I found that practically every set equipped with storage A and B batteries were far better, both in picking up distant stations and in the clearness of reception," he declared. "I also learned that the sets equipped with Willard radio batteries are leading both as to the number of stations picked up, and as to distance of stations from receiving sets. "The ability to pick up distant stations, of course, does not depend entirely on the battery. Antenna, wiring and tubes all have their influence in determining the limits of the set. But without a good storage battery, it is practically impossible to get good results, I have found." Don't let this happen to You! Line your brakes with Time to Think About Seasonal Accessories It's getting time to prepare for wet weather, says Charley Manna, Dodge distributor. The first thing to think about is tires. A casing without a good tread is going to slip, and may slip unless chains are used. Used tires can be fastened on as spares. And remember no tire is any better than the tube inside it, says Manna. A windshield wiper will keep the glass in front clear for the driver. A windshield robber will help too. Top dressings, polishes and rust removers, etc., all of which are in ample supply in Mann's stock of accessories, are necessary to put the surface of the car back into shape after a storm. TRIMBLE, MGR. 226 South Los Angeles St. Anaheim Phone 735 DEFECTIVE BRAKES CAUSE ACCIDENTS More than 700 of the motor vehicles that were examined by New York police during January had defective brakes, declared Marcus Dowd executive secretary of the department of public safety in February when he addressed a meeting of the Asbestos Brake Lining association at Hotel McAlpin, New York. At the present time the police test the brakes of more than 200 automobiles every week in Greater New York. Twenty-nine per cent of the offenders admit their guilt when arraigned in court. The average fine is $25. It is the hope of Mr. Dowd that eventually one of the 800 policemen in New York will spend some of their time in accident prevention work. Other cities are interested in brake inspection work being done in New York and have sent committees to confer with the department of public safety. The handful of men now engaged in brake inspection do not use a testing machine, but examine the brakes themselves and make the operators give a demonstration of the efficiency of the apparatus. Lieutenant P. J. Masterson of the Fourth inspection district of the Metropolitan police, at a dinner given by the Automotive Service Association in New York city, declared that one of the most important things they are watching is faulty brake apparatus. In all cases where accidents occur, if the car has efficient brakes the car owner is prosecuted by the police department. Lieutenant Masterson said that car service stations and service managers can help the police department considerably by inspecting and testing the brakes of all cars that go into their shops for repairs or adjustments of any sort, and notify the owners if their brakes are not working properly. Syme was dismissed from the police force in 1910 and ever since then he has been attempting to attract public attention to his case. He frequently makes incendiary speeches before Buckingham palace and does other things that annoy the police, who are forced to arrest him. Every time he is arrested he initiates a hunger strike. Syme now has 26 hunger strikes WHYS AND WHATS IN LENSES ANSWERED Police and county motorcycle officers throughout California have been conducting night raids, and many hundreds of cards have been issued to car owners warning them to have their headlights tested and secure such lens as the law declares legal. "We are daily receivingquiries in our electrical department about the new headlight jaw," says Local Manager Brown of the Western Auto Supply Co., "and many questions are being asked in regards to the proper lens with which the car should be fitted. We have chosen the MacBeth and Liberty lenses to sell to our customers, as we feel that these two popular makes will give greater lighting efficiency and yet meet all the requirements of the law." "The Macbeth lens is fitted with a green visor that tends to eliminate the glare and cast the rays of light upon the road in such a manner that all the light is utilized." "The Liberty lens was designed to meet the requirements of the law, and in addition to use all the available light in an efficient manner. The front of the lens is divided into six perpendicular recesses, which spreads the beam of light so that the most abrupt turns can be made with safety. Seven transverse prisms on the rear face of the lens bend the light accurately, so that the rays pass under a line 42 inches from the ground measured 75 feet from it." SUPER TYPE ENGINE SUCCESSFUL TRYOUT That electrical propulsion of the Diesel engine type is ideal for canal barges has just been demonstrated in the completion by the Twin Ports of its maiden trip, which began at Ashtabula, O., from the docks of the Great Lakes Engineering Works, and ended at New York City. This journey of approximately 800 miles, was made with great success in less than ten days, without any attempt to set up a speed record. The Twin Ports is the first Diesel electric canal boat ever built in America, and the largest craft to ever pass through the New York state barge canal. She is unique in that she will ply both on inland waters and in coastwise service. During the summer she will carry grain and other cargoes from Duluth to New York, a trip of about 1600 miles. In the winter season she will be used between north Atlantic ports and the West Indies. A sister boat, the Twin Cities, also electrical, is now building. The trial trip of the Twin Ports took place on Lake Erie, off Ashtabula, O., Sept. 10. This test was so successful that the maiden trip was begun without delay, practically the same day. Passing through Lake Eric and the Weiland canal, the boat entered the Erie canal, to cross New York state at Oswego. At Buffalo she was loaded with a cargo of rye. The trip through the Erie canal to Albany and down the Hudson to New York was made in good time. POWER FOR IRRIGATION In the Indian principalities of Mysore, Kashmir and Nepal, the reigning maharajah in each instance has instituted waterpower developments chiefly for irrigation. Those in the north have the advantage of constant water supply from melting snows and glaciers. cur, if the car has efficient brakes the car owner is prosecuted by the police department. Lieutenant Masterson said that car service stations and service managers can help the police department considerably by inspecting and testing the brakes of all cars that go into their shops for repairs or adjustments of any sort, and notify the owners if their brakes are not working properly. Nenno and Elmera representatives in a service station for the Raybestos brake lining, have installed complete machinery for reclining and repairing all brakes. WILL PLANT ELMS FOR TREE MEMORIAL LIMA, O., Oct. 20—Mrs. Warren G. Harding, widow of the late President, writes: "Nothing, I think, could have pleased him more," in her letter registering appreciation of the memorial project and announcing the desire to accept an invitation to plant the first tree in Allen county's living memorial to the late President Harding. If Mrs. Harding can be present the first of the 6000 elms to be planted on either side of the Harding highway, across Allen county, will be planted by her on Arbor day, next April, on the courthouse lawn here. Charles Lathrop Pack, president of the American Tree Association, Washington, D. C., and Congressman John L. Cable, of Limia, are expected to make addresses at the courthouse exercises. Immediately following the planting of the first tree 500 Boy Scouts and high school lads, in motor cars, will be divided into 26 teams and sent out to plant the trees along the 25 miles of the Harding highway in this county.
