FIRST STOCK SEDAN MADE 10 YEARS AGO SYRACUSE, N. Y., Oct. 20—October 29 of this year stands out as a mile post in the automotive industry, for its mark the 10th anniversary for its marks the 10th anniversary this country. This car was shipped by the Franklin Automobile Company to its Dallas, Texas, dealership and was immediately sold to Mr. G. A. Robertson of Dallas, who continued to operate it until June 2 of last year, when it was sold to Mr. S. A. Leake, a prominent attorney of that city. The fact that the first stock sedan is now in its 11th year of service and still running smoothly speaks volumes for the lasting qualities of the sedan type, which has long been the most widely sold model in the Franklin line; it alone forms 53% of the entire Franklin output. No other manufacturer, so far as is known, turns out such a large proportion of sedans. The public had to be educated to the advantages of a light, flexible, all-year-round car suitable for town or country use, on rough roads or smooth, and in the beginning it was a slew process. The first year only 32 Franklin sedans—there were no other makes on the market—were sold. The popularity of the type, however, increased rapidly, and today Franklin's percentage of sedans produced, as compared with total output, is double that of the industry as a whole. Although the sedan is the "ace" of the Franklin line, there is a steady demand for other closed models, so much so in fact that closed cars now form 75% of Franklin output. Nothing, perhaps, could demonstrate more clearly the public's insistent call for the protection and comfort of closed car than that the Franklin Company is now making three closed cars to every open car. STUDEBAKER SALES Certified Service Describes Repairs The history of every car sold and a detailed description of the repairs which have been made is shown to every purchaser, C. P. Hamm of the Anaheim Certified Motor Car Market declared today. The buyer knows exactly what he is getting inside and out. The car is not merely treated to a nice coat of paint and the rest left to Providence. Under a number of captions the detailed needs of the car when it is received are enumerated, and the car is not taken in unless it is really worth while fixing up. These captions include: Body and top, fenders, tires, springs, engine absorbing gear, transmission, wheels extra equipment and electrical equipment. MANY ADVANTAGES IN NEW RECEIVER The advantages of the Federal No. 110 receiver are pointed out by Robert V. Jensen, local distributor. The "wave length" control knob of this receiver, says Jensen, provides means for approximate tuning while the Vernier provides means for the very gradual and precise tuning of the receiver. The "select-degree by which interfering ...J.U.LITY" switch serves to vary the degree by which interfering signals may be eliminated in the operation of the receiver and, in a very rough way, to suit the circuit of the receiver to the particular kind of antenna with which it is used. The three rheostat control knobs on the lower portion of the panel control the brilliance of the vacuum tube filaments. The telephone jacks provide convenient means for making connection between the telephones and the receiver, while the 'R. F. amplification' control knobs make possible the easy control of the degree of amplification which is available in the receiver. Phone 875-782 YOU ARE INVITED TO INSPECT LIGHT CAR PROVES BIG TROUBLE SAVER Looming large as one of the important factors contributing to the improvement of traffic conditions, not only in metropolitan centers but on main traveled highways where congestion develops particularly on Sunday and holidays, is the increasing tendency toward the use of the small, light car. Personal convenience, the element which enters strongly into the lives of all of us, appears as the principal incentive back of the growing swing of sentiment toward the more compact motor car units, says Sid MeGraw, Ford, Perdson and Lincoln distributor. The public, quick to respond to things which insures further comfort and safety in motoring, has been observant of the advantages the small car has in the traffic line, its ability to stop quick, the ease with which it gets in an dout of parking spaces and its general flexibility. The response is apparent in the constantly growing demand for the small car, demand which has been unusually heavy since the first of the present year and which is further expressing itself as the enclosed car buying season approaches. Men whose business keeps them on the move about town all day were not long in discovering the exceptional facilities afforded by the small car and they were quick to adapt it as their standard motor car equipment. Owners of large cars, finding their movements more and more restricted as traffic congestion increases, are rapidly reaching the conclusion that as an auxiliary motor transportation unit the small car is an essential business convenience. Another interesting feature is the partiality which women are showing for the smaller car. They find it more convenient and less fatiguing to operate, affording them a quick and convenient means of transport- Golden Rule Impossible By Statute "If it was possible by legislation to enforce the Golden Rule, we could do away with all regulation of traffic by law," said District Attorney A. P. Nelson in his opening speech at this week's traffic school in the high school, under the auspices of the Truck Owners' association of So. Calif. "The difficulty with the majority of the public who use our highways is that they are entirely lacking in the principles of courtesy when it comes to driving." Regarding the provisions of the new act, Nelson declared that the flat registration fee of $3 was effective after Feb. 24 (not Feb. 1, as popularly supposed). The person or persons signing the application of a minor as parent or guardian shall be to blame for any damage caused by the vehicle. A mirror so arranged as to give the driver a clear view of the road for at least 200 feet to the rear of the vehicle is required on all vehicles where the driver cannot obtain a clear view of the road to the rear or on a vehicle carrying a load extending more than 12 inches beyond the extreme outside of the driver's seat. Regarding headlights, Nelson reiterated his statement that it is impossible for an officer to know and give evidence of glaring headlights in court. "A constant observance of all the rules all the time and under all circumstances is the only way in which anyone can become a good driver of a motor vehicle," the district attorney declared. Regarding speed, the fact that a maximum of 55 miles per hour is permitted does not mean that a person may travel 55 miles per hour at all times and under all circumstances, but the safety of others is the determining factor. Owners of large cars, finding their movements more and more restricted as traffic congestion increases, are rapidly reaching the conclusion that as an auxiliary motor transportation unit the small car is an essential business convenience. Another interesting feature is the partiality which women are showing for the smaller car. They find it more convenient and less fatiguing to operate, affording them a quick and convenient means of transportation for the shopping tours, for little trips to market, for afternoon calls and for meeting other family requirements. And new buyers, profiting by the experience of others, in investigating the merits of the small car, find it meets all modern motoring demands with the additional advantage of easier handling in the traffic line, thereby effecting a greater element of safety. Short wheelbase, small turning radius, ease of steering, the impossibility of failure to accomplish gear shift and do it noiselessly, positive brakes and a motor noted for its dependability are features of the Ford which have contributed largely in making it the most popular of all small cars. And a much higher degree of owner satisfaction has been effected in these cars by recent improvements in both open and enclosed body types, resulting in better style and greater riding comfort. PUTTING LID NOW UPON RECKLESS (Continued on Page Two) less at a given speed. If a collision occurs, says Nelson, "the fact would undoubtedly be prima facie evidence of reckless driving. If the manner of driving the machine were the proximate cause of the accident; in short, this section supercedes all the other special provisions of the law and makes it the duty of the operator of a motor vehicle upon a public highway to operate it at all times, all places, and under all circumstances in such a manner as will insure the safety of all other vehicles or pedestrians who may be using the highway at that particular time and place." Regardless of the distance of the approaching machine, whether 200 feet or not, it is lawful to pass another machine going in the same direction if you pass it to the right of the middle of the highway.
