'SILENT CAL IS MISNOMER NOW'
WASHINGTON, Oct. 15.—Nearly two months in the White House and Calvin Coolidge is a changed man. He is talking. It is true, he has never reached the heights of conventional eloquence and loquacity attained by some of his predecessors, but he is in a stage of transition that threatens to dispel ever the aura of silence that has enveloped him for these many years.
In the great circular room where he sees dozens of people daily, Mr. Coolidge has found it impossible to maintain that reticence for which he is famous.
All the problems and questions of 48 states pass in and out of his office, and they require explanation, decision, procrastination. Politicians big and small marsh daily through the green room. They want something. Perhaps they want nothing more than "a word" for the people back home. And they're getting it.
Under the magic spell of the Presidency Calvin Coolidge is beginning to talk. In his clipped, incisive way he is sending his numerous visitors away from the White House daily satisfied with their "talk" with the President.
It is true his visitors do most of the talking, and he does most of the listening, but that is always true of the presidency. People come to the White House to tell the President their tales of woe or of joy. It is the biggest part of his job to be a ready listener. A listener he has always been, and now he is learning to talk.

URGE PURE MILK FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN
CHICAGO, Oct. 15—Children who devour jelly beans and lollypops never can make good at their studies as well as those who drink milk freely, according to Peter A. Mortensen, supt. of Chicago's schools.
His remarks were prompted by reports that children were boycotting dealers permitted to sell pure milk in the public school buildings because these dealers had advanced their price from three to four cents for half-pint bottles.
Mortenson said that because the school board knew the value of pure milk in sharpening the wits and bettering the physical condition of studying children, only milk that had been proved to be of the best quality was sold in the schools.
AUSTRALIA BANS KANGAROO EXPERT
CINCINNATI, Oct. 15.—Australia has placed a ban upon the export of kangaroos, according to Ellis S. Jacobs, noted Australian hunter, who has just sold 14 of the residents of the antipodes to the Cincinnati Zoological Gardens.
In a letter to Sol Stephan, general manager of the zoo, Jacobs stated that this would be the last shipment of kangaroos from Australia.

PLACES SCIENCE BEFORE FAITH
SYRACUSE, Oct. 15.—Unscientific cults, with unlimited promises of relief from disease, will continue to attract until the science of medicine becomes general knowledge. So declares Dean Herman G. Weiskotten, of the college of medicine, Syracuse University, one of the state's most prominent physicians.
Through the medium of religious faith, mysticisms of generations ago and spectacular methods of cure which spring into existence, with no scientific foundation, Dean Weiskotten declares, certain of the public still attempt cure of diseases.
While the science of medicine in its present incomplete state is unable to offer specific cures, the dean added, these unscientific cults apparently know no limitation in their promise of relief.

SUSPECT GHOSTS OF NIGHTLY ATTACKS
HANNIBAL, Mo., Oct. 15.—This is a ghost story from the county made famous by the Adventures of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, who in their day dealt with haunted caves, future reading "hair-balls," superstitious Nigger Jim, Injun Joes and a host of other weird events and beings dear to the heart of every real American.
The "hants" in this story have queerly human characteristics, although the oldest inhabitant who probably played with Tom and Huck in the old days on the Missouri-Mississippi shore has precedents to prove that "ghosts is ghosts," regardless of their manifestations.
It seems there is a house not far from Hannibal—the Swisher place—that nightly for months has been subjected to a shower of eggs, apples, coal, stones and sticks. Chlekens mysteriously disappear, and strange, crooning sounds are heard in the trees and around the eaves of the house when blow mysterious the winds o'night.
Sheriff Bender of Marion county was notified who, although mystified, scouts the ghost theory. But the country folk, who have seen strange-things in their time around Hannibal, in the Mississippi caves and the other haunts of witches, are firmly convinced that the attacks are from nothing of earthly origin.
