CERTIFIED PLAN CUTS CAR COSTS Through the operation of the Orange County Appleby plan of accepting used cars in trade at their actual present day value, plus cost of conditioning and 10 per cent handling charge, it has been possible to furnish the buying public with independent transportation at a lower cost, says a representative of the market. It is an altogether different feeling to buy a used car and know that you are getting real, honest value that materially cuts the cost of motor mileage. Every form of transportation costs money, and motor transportation costs are based on the amount paid on the purchase price and the additional cost of maintenance and operation. Therefore in buying a used car it is very essential to ascertain the truth about its condition. Don't bother so much about the looks, because many times a coat of paint will hide mechanical defects. Find out the truth about the inside condition, the places where the closest inspection is required to learn the facts, so that every possible element of chance is eliminated. During the past six months since the Orange County Certified Markets have been established hundreds of used car buyers have learned the distinction existing between used car dealers of the gyp variety and the "Certified" markets operated to give a square deal to all who have occasion to transact business along the above lines. HEADLIGHT ADJUSTER EXPLAINS NEW LAW Have you driven your car at night and cursed the other fellow's lights? Did you not think that he was a law breaker and was making night driving unsafe? Did you not think that he was a law breaker and was making night driving unsafe? But did you ever think that your own lights might be as bad as the other fellow's and that he was thinking that you ought to be arrested for being a danger to the highways? According to J. C. S. Garrick, chief adjuster of headlights for Harry D. Riley, this was the reason that the new 1923 law was devised—to make driving safe for both parties. First, Making your light sufficient to see objects at 250 to 450 feet ahead of the car; in other words cover the safety zone. Second, To take all glare out of the head lamps that are facing you. The new law requires 21 candle power bulb in all devices that have passed the new tests, regardless what was granted under old laws. Warning is also sent out not to purchase lenses, unless they are listed under official bulletins. Your old lens will pass until Jan. 1, 1924, if properly adjusted and focused under the new law. By that time they may be listed officially under the new law. Franklin at 15 Miles Is Stopped in 8 Feet Statistics compiled by Safety First Bureau in the larger cities show that more automobile accidents occur at 15 miles per hour than at any other speed. Recognizing that an almost instantaneous stop at this speed is necessary to avoid collision with children at play or pedestrians who thoughtlessly step out from the curb, the Franklin Automobile Company recently made a public braking test. A sedan, running at this normal traffic rate over city pavement, was stopped in 8 ft. 2 in., or in about two-thirds of the car's length. This distance is 12 ft. 6 in. better than the safety standard accepted for many years by leading engineering authorities. Stops at other speed ranged from 70% to 150% better than the standard. Demonstrations similar to the one made at Syracuse are to be given throut the country by Franklin dealers. City safety commissions and others interested in the safety first movement will be invited to watch the tests. Plain Dealer Want-ads bring results. AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRICIANS Automobile Electricians Block South of Flag Pole Anaheim "BUY TIRES ON CREDIT," NEW PLAN The "Buy on Credit" idea that is almost universal in its application, has at last been extended to the tire business in Anaheim by the Reliable Tire Co. Many motorists who have bought their homes on time, their automobiles on monthly payments, as well as their groceries and other necessities on charge accounts, are just beginning to realize that it is just as logical to buy tires the same way. "Of course this system appeals to the motorist who is temporarily short of funds and needs tire," says Roy Mendoza. "He finds at our store that he is able to secure the best standard makes of tires, paying only a small weekly payments that are in small weekly payments that are never missed. "A great many of our customers will be surprised," says Mendoza. "that it does not cost them any more to buy tires on time than it does to pay cash, because no interest is charged. Another point that has made a great hit with our customers in the past has been the fact that our store accepts in trade old tires that owners formerly had to throw away. This point, together with our additional service of changing tires and testing alignment, etc., free of charge, makes up a service that we believe is second to none." LIGHTS ADJUSTMENT ANYWHERE PERMITD There is nothing in the law to prevent a car owner having his lights and other safety devices adjusted at any shop he please, according to B. P. Herr of the Exide Service Station. If he goes elsewhere later, the other shop can make no repairs unless they are necessary. Herr and Fulfer are prepared to look after their trade as usual and give the same quality of service as they have always given. FOR RESULTS—Try a Plain Dealer Want-ad.
