Calif. Just as the housewives are undertaking their fall sweeping bees so the various counties are ridding-the roads of rubbish, scattered far and wide by summer vacationists in this part of the state. It is probable, says the Auto Club, that drastic steps will be taken next season by all counties to prevent the littering of the highways by thoughtless motorists in some communities, notably that of Monrovia near Los Angeles. Definite plans are being drawn up at this time with this end in view. Manager A. M. Young now is negotiating by cable with him and N. W. Rowe, his runner up and Count Zborowski, Marquis Alsega and Pietro Borndine to appear at Beverly Bowl. Salamano drove a Fiat. His time was 5h. 27m. 38s. Felice Nazarro, also at the wheel of a Fiat was second less than 800 yards behind his team mate, his time being 5h. 28m. 2s. Jimmy Murphy driving a Miller Special was third in 5h. 32m. 51s. A Benz finished fourth. Marquis Alsega landed his Miller-built racer in fifth place. Count Zborowski also piloting a Miller Special made a good race of it for half the distance before he was put out of the running by a burned out bearing. Pietro Bordino, who drove a Fiat in the Los Angeles Thanksgiving Day race last year, and made a great run in the early stages of the race, leading at 200, 300 and 350 kilometers, dropped out at 470 kilometers. He again piloted a Fiat. The race, which was run over a figure 8 course was for 700 kilometers or about 430 miles. Salamano averaged 147 kilometers or about 91.3 miles per hour. Tommy Milton's average at Indianapolis for 600 miles was 91.44 miles per hour. Considering the new track conditions with which they were unfamiliar, and their brief practice, the pilots of the American cars made a creditable showing. Arphy will race on the British three mile cement circuit at Brooklands on Sept. 22nd and on the 2% mile board and cement course at Barcelona on Oct. 8. He will then hurry across the ocean to drive a Durant Special on Cliff Durant's team at Beverly Bowl on Turkey Day. USED CAR MARKETS STILL MULTIPLYING Every week brings news to C. P. Hamm, manager of the Anaheim and Fullerton markets of the Orange-co Motor Car Dealers' Ass'n, of new mkets that have been opened, using the Appleby plan. Whittier is the latest to be on the point of starting. James E. Appleby was here a few days ago on the way to Salt Lake, Denver, Chicago and Detroit. In Detroit he will open offices preparatory to nationalizing his plan. AUTO CLUB INVESTS IN COUNTIES’ BONDS Extensive purchases of municipal and county bonds throughout the southern counties of the state on the part of its insurance exchange, in the interest of public welfare, has just been announced by the Auto Club of So.Calif. Believing that no better dispensation of its reserve funds could be made than an investment in highly secured and interest bearing bonds club officials have established the practice, it is just announced, of taking up securities offered by counties and municipalities within the territory represented by the automobile club. Motorists will be interested to know that these investments, made by the insurance department of the organization, are carried out under the sanction of the State Insurance Commissioner, and are made with surplus tuna of that institution, according to California State law. In other words, the club feels that it can prove itself of greater public service by making its surplus reserve active through the purchase of highway and school bonds, than by allowing it to lie fallow. Among the securities now held by the Auto club are Orange County Highway bonds, San Bernardino County Highway Bond, San Diego county highway bonds; Beverly Hills school district bonds; Municipal bond of the City of Pasadena; Alhambra City school bonds; City of Long Beach water bonds; Newark school district bonds; San Diego school district bonds; Imperial county highway bonds; City of Bakerfield bonds and Kern county highway bonds; various bonds of Orange county municipalities including water works and school bonds; Riverside county highway bonds; San Luis Obispo school district and highway bonds; Santa Barbara county highway and school bonds; Tulare county highway and school bonds; and Ventura county highway and Oxnard school district bonds. In this way a powerful stimulus is injected into the purchase of worthy securities, it is pointed out, and a precedent established among motoring organizations for an actice interest in the welfare of the communities represented within the territory of such an organization. Officials of the Auto Club of So. Calif., have checked up the season's touring volume, securing telegraphic reports from the nations' greatest playgrounds in order to arrive at a general understanding of summer motoring condition. It is shown in this report that 188,866 automobiles carrying 712,042 persons, visited the national parks of America, three of which are located in California, during the summer. And while Bear Valley is not listed among the national parks, estimated figures from that section of the southern part of the state show that the greatest number of motorist-entered that recreational center. Motor travel into Yosemite Valley showed an increase of 30 per cent over motor travel there last year for the summer season. The number of autos visiting Sequoia and General Grant Memorial Parks increased 50 per cent this summer. The increase into Yellowstone national park was 30 per cent. Auto officials declare that these figures give a hint of what to expect next year in motor car volume of travel. Even at the present enormous rate of increase, motor travel next year will be at least 50 per cent greater than this year, and in many instances, says the club, it will be 100 per cent greater. Glacier National park was visited by 4,534 automobiles this season and a total of 29,084 persons which arrived by both train and motor. Yellowstone Park was visited by 91,890 individuals and by 26,931 automobiles. Sequoia National Park in California had 29,095 automobiles. Sequoia National Park in California had 29,095 visitors and 9,572 autos. General Grant entertained 44,061 visitors and was host to 11,584 cars. Motorists in Yosemite numbered 85,724 by means of 26,483 autos, while the total number of people entering Yosemite by both train and automobile reached 125,228. Grand Canyon was visited by 9,792 motor cars carrying 32,183 passengers. It is further pointed out that the summer season is not yet entirely over and many motoring parties are now taking last chances on getting into these areas before the actual winter season closes down on them. S. P. DERAILMENT LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22.—Traffic on the So. Pac. coast line was seriously delayed late last night by derailment of a freight near San Ardo, between Paso Robles and Del Monte Junction. Nenno and Elmers' accessory store within a short time will have the largest and most varied stock in the history of the concern or its predecessors. A new line of steel shelving is being put in in the space where the tires were to look after many new lines of accessories and parts and the tires taken upstairs. Ring gears, Stromberg carburetors and a brake lining and riveting machine of which there are only 26 in the entire State will be taken on. The machine "countersinks" rivets while lining the brakes and makes injury to the bakes unlikely. All of the usual lines are being retained. Not long ago a burnishing machine was added to the shop's equipment as an addition to the service provided. 43 P. C. GAIN IN SALES IN AUGUST Southern California, in buying 12,-173 cars and trucks netted a gain of 43% while Northern California motorists and business firms took possession of 8337 new motor vehicles, an aggregate of 13% more than was bought in the northern 47 counties during August, 1922, figures just compiled show. Orange-co with 591 sales against 475 went from sixth to fifth place. The southern 11 counties registered 10,776 automobiles, a gain of 43% and the north is credited with 7329 new cars, an increase of 14%. Truck sales totaled 2406 and they were divided, 1403 in the south, and advance of 43% and 1003 in the north, a gain for the latter district of 2%. Los Angeles-co easily leads all others in sales volume with a total of 9242 compared to 6206 in August, a year ago. San Francisco-co is second with 1645 new registration in contrast to 5497. Alameda-co comes third with 1199 sales in contrast to 1061. Presno is fourth among the counties with 744 sales against 757 in August, 1922. GAS WAR IN IOWA DES MOINES, Sept. 22.—The gasoline price war in Iowa is spreading, and while both the Standard and competitors here declared today that there would be no further effort to cut prices, indications were that a price of 141-2 cents a gallon would soon prevail throughout the state. "A continuance of the price-cutting is farthest from our intentions." R. H. Thomas, assistant manager of the Standard, said, "but in every city where we have had attempts to undersell us, we have reduced our prices to those of competitors." summer season is not yet entirely over and many motoring parties are now taking last chances on getting into these areas before the actual winter season closes down on them. DODGE BROTHERS TOURING CAR In city traffic or on the open road, this new touring car impresses you instantly with its exceptional riding comfort. The seats are deeper and lower. The body has been lengthened to afford more leg room. Its low-swung design reduces side sway and increases the car's stability at all speeds. The front springs are wider, and built of more and thinner leaves; the rear springs—now underslung—have been materially increased in length. In fact the comfort of the car is comparable in every way with its good looks and the well known character of its performance. CHAS. H. MANN DODGE BROTHERS DEALER 210 So. Did you ever notice the way the inside 10 feet on pave streets is often almost untouched by oil? That shows how little this part of the road is traveled. It's an imposition to force a man out to the other side of the road before he can pass. And it's a potential cause of all sorts of accidents." The apparent reduction in ordinary weights of truck loads to the county limit of 22,000 pounds has been defeated by an exception to the rule which permits trucks weighing 10,000 pounds to carry 24,000 pounds until Jan. 1, 1927. Scores of these trucks have been appearing on the highways the Are "Evolutionary" Evolutionary, rather than revolutionary changes mark the new Buick models, declares Bill Gcodrum of the Anaheim Auto Co. local distributors. A re-designed six cylinder valve-in-head motor—new four wheel brakes—distinctively Buick; increased wheel base—consequently more room—an ingenious new carburetor with simple arrangement for quick heat adjustment, complete automatic lubrication, new springs, new axles, heavier frames. These are a few of the literally scores of new features noted in the new Buick sixes. And many of these apply to the fours, including the four-wheel brakes. The new six cylinder engine of 60 to 70 horsepower is a long story in itself, the brakes another, body design another, refinements and equipment another. Through adoption of newly designed cams and a heavier crankshaft unusual quiet in operation has been attained, which adds one more element to the notable power, speed and smoothness of operation attained without a single sacrifice of Buick principles. HARRY D. RILEY SALES Dr. E. J. Steen or Fullerton purchased a big six speedstr this week of Harry D. Riley, Northern Orange county distributor. E. J. Doheny of Fullerton bought a special touring Earl Belden of Anaheim and W. R. Braly of Buena Park also purchased cars. A new "joker" in the new State Motor Vehicle act! The apparent reduction in ordinary weights of truck loads to the county limit of 22,000 pounds has been defeated by an exception to the rule which permits trucks weighing 10,000 pounds to carry 24,000 pounds until Jan. 1, 1927. Scores of these trucks have been appearing on the highways the past few weeks, clearly marked as requireil by law. These trucks may be purchased up to Jan. 1 next, but not thereafter. Enraged ranchers, who have appeared repeatedly before the Board of Supervisors with complaints that county boulevards were being ruined, need not blame the truck companies hereafter. The law permits the purchase of the heavier truck, as stated, and most of the truck companies seem to be adopting it. That the excessive weights, up to 30,000 pounds on State-blvd5 which formerly prevailed now are reduced is little comfort, because the county has only one State highway, altho the new piece of the coast route from Seal Beach to Huntington Beach soon will be in full use. Meanwhile the supervisors can't close roads to heavy traffic except under conditions which, according to J. L. McBride, county engineer, are practically prohibitive.
