JEROME SHOWS HOW REAL VALUES JUMP
The complete official report of County Auditor W. G. Jerome which was given out today shows in detail the changes brought about in assessed valuations by the decline in oil production in some sections, the increase in others and the jump due to building improvements.
All districts as a class reflect the results of these two causes.
The four road districts, which very roughly correspond to the supervisorial districts outside Santa Ana show a total exclusive of operative property amounting to $28,375,319 against $91,142,120 last year on the same date March 1.
The assessed valuation of high school districts jumps from $135,622,630 to $144,532,275. There are eight of them—Anhelm, Capitrano, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Orange, Santa Ana and Tustin. The decline of the Fullerton district, which covers Area Yorba Linda etc., from $63,150,325 to $50,602,920, is made up for by the rise in the Huntington Beach district from $13,721,315 to $26,082,335.
CAMPAIGN BEGINS TO KEEP LAKE CLEAN
CHICAGO, Aug. 2 — Yacht and motor-boat owners who persist in contaminating the waters of Lake Michigan with refuse from their crafts near bathing beaches of Chicago will be vigorously prosecuted.
This was the warning sounded by Health Commissioner Bundsen as he explained the procedure as to the course the city is taking to make the lake safe for next summer.
"Quite a few of these yachts and motor boats hang around the beaches their skippers and crews intent on enticing bathing girls," the commissioner explained. "Refuse, especially from the larger boats is emptied into the lake, regardless of location, thus contaminating the waters until they are unsafe—and often dangerous for bathers."

"A rigid patrol of the beaches will be instituted soon and all such craft will be seized and their owners arrested."
RALEIGH'S BRIAR
CLAIMED BY TWO
LONDON, Aug. 2—Where is Sir Walter Raleigh's pipe? And who owns it? That is a question engaging the lovers of the briar here and incidentally is causing much controversy.
For some years Messrs. Dunhill, known among pipe connoisseurs the world over, have claimed that the famous pipe is owned by them. But their claim is now disputed by one R. T. Spencer, of Bristol, who says that the pipe is really in his possession.
In support of his claim he puts forward interesting data in which he says that the pipe was presented early in the last century to his old grandfather, then a young man, by an old soldier who had the pipe in his possession for some time.
He describes the pipe in detail and illustrates its authenticity by describing the face at the base of the bowl, which is of the "Red Indian" type known as used on the first pipes and still bears traces of artificial coloring.
There the matter rests for the moment. But the Dunhills assert that they do not intend to have their historic heritage go by default so easily.
FLAPPER TOO FRANK
IN MODE OF DRESS
CHICAGO, Aug. 2—The American flapper is too frank in her dress in the opinion of Miss De Yoeh Koo pretty Chinese maid, who is in Chicago studying banking.
"I think your women are wonderful," she said. "They have more freedom here than we have in China. But of the young girls, the ones you call flappers, I think—yes, I think maybe they are too frank in their dress. They dream for the street like they do to go to a party. But you have wonderfully smart girls here, and they are good in business."
While admitting that she was almost shocked by the ultra modernism of the flapper until she got used to it, Miss Koo expressed her admiration for the American girl on the whole.
REFORMED BANDIT RETURNS RADIO
ROME, Aug. 2.—"I was a bandit,
but I have reformed and here is a part of the radio outfit which I took some time ago. I will return the rest of the outfit when I pass through Rome about a month from now."
This was a portion of a typewritten note attached to a part of the Bevins Marshall radio outfit. The stolen part was found in the boy's back yard after the entire set had been missing for several weeks.
The "bandit" said in the note that he had undergone a change of heart.
PROVISO HOLDS UP HARBOR REMODELING
SOUTHAMPTON, Aug. 2.—Southampton's Harboard has agreed to expend nearly $100,000 in enlarging the swimming ground for the big lines now using the port, provided that the United States Shipping Board guarantee to pay a minimum of $7,500 per year in harbor dues for the Leviathan, whether she uses the port or not.
RELIES FOUND AFTER EARTHQUAKE
ROME, Aug. 2.—Relies in the form of two large brass vases filled with pieces of gold and believed by experts to belong to a period three or four hundred years B. C., have been discovered at Ognina, near Mt Etna. They were found in a flaws in an old wall by a deaf and dumb peasant following a slight earthquake.
An Iowa university professor has invented a device to filter out undesirable sounds from musical instruments, telephones and photographs.
