MODERN BENEDICTS ARE ABLE HUSBANDS
KANSAS CITY, Aug. 2.—"The young men of today who married early in life are better able to take care of their wives than the young men of city years ago."
Professor William A. Lewis, head of the department of sociology and economics at the Kansas City Junior College says so. And professor Lewis who has been interested in social welfare work for nearly fifty years, ought to know.
"And another thing—the age of marriage is actually decreasing instead of increasing, as some writers would have us believe," Professor Lewis said.
Premium paid for youth is the reason he believes.
"The young man of today has a chance so much greater than the young man of yesterday that there can be no comparison. Young blood and young brains are wanted in every line of work the world over. Men are willing to pay for them and hence we have more independence, bigger bank accounts and earlier marriages for the youth of today," he said.
Lewis praised the teaching of the home economics in the schools and the discussion of economic problems in general.
"There are fewer girl wasters when it comes to problems of the household upkeep than there were fifty years ago, too" he declared.
"Home economics and scientific housekeeping have done that for the girls. The time before she gets married is when a girl gets in all of her wasting, frivolous spending and foolishness. While she's spending papa's money it's all right—but when it's her hubby—she freezes on to it good and hard."

PARIS OPERA IN NEED OF REPAIRS
PARIS, Aug. 2.—The Paris Opera, largest and most luxurious theater in the world and the pride of all France, is in need of renovation. M. Patouillard, supervisor of the structure, is authority for the statement that a quarter of a million dollars' worth of repairs are required at once.
The French weather has dealt unkindly with the gorgeous exterior ornaments and stone surface of the Opera.
Even the famous Grand Staircase, one of the sights of Paris, has lost its imposing appearance. The government's miserly allowance of $10,000 a year for upkeep does not provide enough care-takers to keep the marble surfaces cleaned and polished.
The fiftieth anniversary of the building of the Opera, will be observed in December, 1924. Already, however, there is agitation to put the structure under the control of the Historic Monuments Commission in which case an admission will be charged to sightseers who wanted only to glimpse the Grand Staircase.
ARRESTED AS DRUNK GIVES NOVEL EXCUSE
WORCHESTER, Mass., Aug. 2.—"Your Honor, 'twas gas, not booze," declared Patrick F. Dowd, of No. 13 Mason street in District Court, in defense to a charge of drunkenness.
"I just had a tooth extracted", Dowd explained, "and when I walked out of the dentist's everything was hazy. Maybe I created a disturbance, as the officer says but I don't remember."
When asked who the dentist was Dowd declared he did not know, but said he was on Main street and had a big sign in front of the office.

AMOY CAPTURED BY
NO. CHINA CRUISER
MANILA, Aug. 2.—Northern Chinese cruiser captured Amoy yesterday, landing troops" said a private cable received here today from Amoy, China.
"All works suspended and no boats crossing the harbor. Situation very bad," it added.
Another private message said:
"Owing to fighting of the Chinese contending forces communication with Kulangu has been cut off. The customs house has stopped work and business offices are closed.

MAY SEEK DIVORCE
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 2.—Corrine Griffith, screen star, was reported today as stating that she was contemplating a divorce soft and that her case already was in the hands of her attorneys in New York City where the action probably will be filed.
The estrangement and final separation from her husband, Webster Campbell, film director, occurred about a year ago, it was said.
QUARTET ENJOYS
LONG MOTOR TRIP
A motor trip covering several thousand miles terminated yesterday when a quartet of lads returned to their homes. They left early Sunday morning July 15 and went to Arizona, stopping at Phoenix, Prescott, Jerome, Sherman Ranch, and Flagstaff. From there they went directly to Grand Canyon where they made a visit of all the pleasure resorts. From Colorado they went to Washington. In California they visited Sacramento and then went to San Francisco where they enjoyed the sights. The home trip from San Francisco was made down the coast.
The quartet, Johnny Clark, Elmer Berdow, Elmer Clabaugh and John Steinman, made the trip in Buick.
