RE-ELECT RILEY AS C. OF C. PRESIDENT Nine of the 12 directors of the new Chamber of Commerce Board met last night in the council chamber of the new city hall, and elected Harry D. Riley president of the body. Mr. Riley protested that new blood was needed in that office, and with new material in the board, a successor might be found who would be willing to take up the burdens of the work, of which he had enough. His voice was over-rules. R. C. Berger, vice president last year, was re-elected. R. E. Smith, cashier Golden State National Bank, was elected treasurer. No vote was taken on the office of secretary; this matter being deferred until next Friday's meeting. President Riley gave a report of the last year's activities, which was ordered placed before the members and published in the local papers. Report of auditor Lloy, as to finances, was promised for the next meeting. H. H. Benjamin, who has been a member of the board since its organization, tendered his resignation, which was accepted with regret. Dr. H. A. Johnston, standing next on the final election roll, was put into Benjamin's place. As a budget committee the chairman appointed Messrs. Alhborn, Yungbluth and aBecke; the committee on committees, which is to choose and recommend members of the several special and standing committees for a year, consists of Messrs Berger, Evans and Yungbluth. Committees to be filled include: forum, publicity, industries, transportation, finance, California, Valencia Orange show, Orange co Fair, city extension, permanent Flood Control, good roads, light extension, membership, civic improvements, inter-city relations. Unanimously, it was decided to sign a lease with G. M. Bartlett, for approximately eight acres, at the intersection of Palm with the State Highway, for the site of the Orange show, the lease standing ten years with privilege of renewal. Messrs Yungbluth and Evans were thanked for their efforts in bringing this project to fruition. CALIFORNIA BABIES PARADE AT BEACH The Long Beach Amusement League has announced that on Saturday afternoon, August 18th, the first Annual Southern California baby parade will be held on the Pike and Pier at the beach city. Cash prizes totaling in excess of $500 to be awarded by judges to be announced later. The event is proclaimed a pagent of the finest products of Southern California—beautiful babies, wonder children, cheeks colored by the sun, eyes sparkling with health, the finest babies in all the world, for which the Anaheim district is noted. Visualize It If you can—all the beauty of it—California babies with California Gowers heaped all around them passing in procession in California sunshine, wheeled along by proud nurse maids or prouder mothers. Happy to Report There’s No Burglary The burglary was reported to the local police this morning from the community playground west of the city park, was a false alarm. Miss Irene Jacques, playground director announced this afternoon. The padlock to the store-case was missing last night, so Miss Jacques had the things removed from the case. Someone else came down early this morning, found the case empty and reported a burglary. Quezon today cabled the Philippine bureau of Washington that the "uncertain political status of the Philippines must be settled once and for all." ERECTING PLANT IN INDIANA TOWN HAMMOND, Ind., July 21.—A big manufacturing plant being built by the Ford Motor Car Company at Hegewich, near here, will be opened the middle of August, it has been announced. The plant will employ 5,200 workers. Automobiles will be assembled and closed bodies built. Henry Ford viewed the plant for the first time recently. USE OF SEALING WAX Sealing wax is a convenient substitute for soldering the ground connection. The ground wire may be wound around the nickel-coated cold water faucet and covered with a collar of sealing wax, which effectively excludes the air, leaving the connection bright and clean for an indefinite period. Staff Correspondent) MEXICO CITY, July 21.—Rancho Villa, Mexico’s picturesque ex-bandit leader was shot down by men who had sworn to take his life to revenge the execution of the father and three brothers of Francisco Herrera, a political leader opposed to the bandit chieftain, according to the belief of government officials here today. Herrera’s relatives were executed at the order of Villa when he was in the heyday of his power. Herrera awore that one day he would wreak his vengeance upon Villa. Villa went to Parral a few days ago to arrange for the sale of his crops. He started back to Canutillo early yesterday morning in an automobile which he was driving. Just as he was passing through a suburb called Guanajuato, seven men hiding behind a fence, opened fire. Villa and two of his men were killed instantly, the others being shot down a few minutes later. Leuter Jones, of the United States Coast Guard and Geodetic Survey and containing for the first time a chart of the new "Harding Gateway," named in honor of the President during his Alaskan trip. The "Harding Gateway" must be approved by the United States Geographic Board, which will meet in October.
