Saturday, July 21, 1923. NEW BOOKS IN FULLERTON LIBRARY Every one knows of P. T. Barnum and his circus, but not so many know that he brought the first classical music to this country; that he was a great financier, a friend of the foremost men of his time, a man who knew as much about "crowd" psychology as any one who has ever lived before or since in short, an American personality who lett his stamp on the years of America's "growing up". No more amusing or interesting biography has appeared in any a long day than is the story of P. T. Barnum's life as told by M. R. Warner. This is one of the new books to be ready for circulation at the Fullerton library at 7 P. M. Saturday night. Another interesting biography among the new books is Robertson's Edgar A. Poe, a Psychoatric sunny. The life story of the most puzzling figure in American literary history. A most delightful autobiography is Mrs. Patrick Campbell's "My Life and some Letters". Mrs. Campbell who for many years was one of the foremost and most popular figures of the English stage, discusses intimately most of the leading actors, managers, playwrights, poets and men of letters of her generation. "The Call of the Mountains" by LeRoy Jeffers is a good book for the vacation season. With sleeping bug and ice axe Mr. Jeffers has journeyed through the United States and Canada, exploring the deepest chayons and climbing many of the highest mountains. To those in a search of adventure he deplets the turill of climbs amid perils of big storms and avalanches, of lightning and darkness. Other new books of non-fiction are as follows: Bonser—The Elementary school curriculum. Cleland—History of California. The American period covers the last 125 years of California history. Donahay—The Calorie Cook Book. An interesting and practical cook book with economical receipts giving value of foods in calories and huming the foods rich in vitamins. Fernald—English grammar simplified. Marshall—An Empire Story Store. DINNER STORIES A certain city editor of a Kansas newspaper desired to turn the spotlight of fame upon himself. To do so, he decided to emulate the policies of these well-known journals which are designated "yellow." He waited until the time was ripe. A certain city editor of a Kansas newspaper desired to turn the spotlight of fame upon himself. To do so, he decided to emulate the policies of these well-known journals which are designated "yellow." He waited until the time was ripe. One day a murder occurred in Kansas City which attracted a great deal of attention. It gave him his chance. He called in a carpenter to make him extra headlines—nothing smaller than a foot. Bubbling over with exultation, he took up to the managing editor, expecting not only his o.k. but an enthusiastic word of commendation. The managing editor looked at them and nodded. "Yes," he said; "marvelous, my dear fellow. Most striking. But," he went on. "I rather hoped to keep these for the second coming of the Lord." Blake was talking with his friend Scribbler, the well known English journalist of Fleet street, says London Answers. "Do you believe in writing anonymously?" he asked the hero of the pen. Scribbler looked to see that the door of his study was shut ere he replied in a confidential whisper. "Well, I've often wished that one of my productions had been anonymous." "What was that?" asked Blake. "A letter proposing to Mrs. Scribbler," groaned the famous writer. Tarkington — The fascinating stranger and other stories. Suvenile Basset — Story of Wool. It is that time-tried dependability—so vital to the pleasure and economy of motoring—which, more than any single factor, has endeared Dodge Brothers Touring Car to so many hundreds of thousands of owners. One-eighth of the total weight of the car consists of chrome vanadium steel. Many more pieces of alloy steel are used in vital parts than normal wear requires. CHAS. H. MANN DODGE DEALER 210 S. Thousands of motorists every year give up intended transcontinental motor trips because they fear the difficulties of crossing the western deserts and the continental divide. They imagine every sort of danger, from more breakdowns to dying of thirst on 'the Mojave desert, and yet, in reality, these roads are no worse than many of them. Taxi Co. TRELLS Para Bell Tires Roy Mendona of the Reliable Tire Co. today made public a letter received by the Para Bell Tire & Rubber Co. from a well known Chicago taxi concern, regarding the Para'Bell tire. The letter says: "We are pleased to advise you that the many cord tires of your manufacture placed on test on our cabs in this city have proven the most economical tire equipment this company has ever purchased. "For your information we wish to say that your cord tires have given us an average of two thousand miles more service than any product we have used before, which constitutes all the standard makes. It is our intention to recommend the use of your tires exclusively on our cabs in the future. "Our sincerity in this statement is supported by our recent purchase from you of one thousand 4.4% and 5 inch cord casings having been assured by your officials that there is no possibility of a change in the quality of your product, and we feel confident our relations will extend over a period of years." REPAIR BUSINESS GOOD; SALES SHOW The repair business continues excellent, according to F. S. Dusklop of the Nu-Way Tire Co. Purchase of tires is slow, owners trying to make their existing equipment go as long as possible. Repair materials advanced with tires, but that doesn't spoil the economy feature of repairs, says Dunlop. One of the biggest results of Presidents Harding's visit will be cutting red tape and general expedition of Alaskan affairs in the departments of commerce, the interior and agriculture. The president has one stop remaining in Alaska. This will be at Sitka, the oldest town in the territory established as a trading post by the Russians in the seventeenth century. POINTY SEALING OF Batteries Serious A fruitful source of battery trouble in the past has been the method of sealing battery posts and covers. Pallure here has caused fractured posts, cracked plats and corroded terminals, says L. H. McGeen of 419 W. Center-st., local distributor. The flexible, solid-proof Westinghouse post seal eliminates all such troubles. It is composed of pure gun rubber and lead parts, and seals so perfectly that not even air can escape. Yet it is flexible and shock absorbing, so that the plates, posts and covers will not break from the bumps and shocks of regular service. It is simple in design and an easy job to open up, and can be dismantled without injury to any other part. EDITOR SENTENCED FOR LEGION LIBEL (By International News Service) CHICAGO, July 21.—Arthur Lorenz, former editor of the Illinois Staats Zeitung, today was sentenced to serve six months in the Bridewell prison for libelling the American Legion. "The American Legion has been tried and not found wanting," said Judge Hugo Pam in sentencing Lorenz. "It ensures this country continuance as a world power." Lorenz was accused of having written an editorial calling members of the legion "tramps," "vagabonds" and "bumms." HOUSEKEEPER SAYS DOCTOR IS ALTRUIST An air of mystery was thrown about the Dr. Helon Allen case today when he and three women refused to answer certain questions put to them by the authorities. They merely replied that all questions would be answered at the proper time. Mrs. Cruze, the "housekeeper," pictures Dr. Allen as an altruistic person, devoting himself and his money to the uplift of the southern states. She declared that Allen, two girls and harself had been living an unquestionable life. Dr. Allen vehemently denies that his school in Virginia was conducted in any but a strict and respectable manner. He also declares that his indictment in the case is the outcome of jealousy of a brother of Miss Cruze. COULDN'T LEAVE HATCHING EGGS HARDESLET, Den's July 21.—Police summoned a provincial peasant.
