A.A.C.W. SCORES FRAUD IN BATTERY GUARANTEE
Scoring deception on the part of manufacturers, particularly batteries, the Associated Advertising Clubs of the world in a statement which came to A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot a few days ago declares 'actual fraud' in some of the cases has been committed.
Robert Jensen, well known radio and battery distributor, also recieved a copy of the statement.
"Complaints coming to the National Vigilance Committee of the Advertising Clubs of the world from widely divergent sources indicate that such abuses are not sporadic, but are quite general in many localities, and that prompt steps in abatement must be taken unless they are to become more or less the general rule.
"The National Vigilance Committee in cooperation with its affiliated Beter Business Bureaus throughout the country, proposes to direct its attention to these practices, in order that the public may be protected and given a dependable guide, and that legitimate concerns be provided with a standard and better business method may be premanently built.
Entering into details, the statement declares; "No phase of battery advertising has been more abused than the guarantee clause or the certificate. A persual of current copy discloses that guarantees of all sorts are being made and to unbelievable extents.
"Prospective purchasers are told by one manufacturer that its batteries are 'unconditionally guaranteed for one year'. The next says 'unconditionally guaranteed for two years', and so on, one out-doing the other until three, four and five year limits are reached, and the time guarantee becomes preposterous, incapable of fulfillment, and of no advertising value to the reputable manufacturer who may care to use a guarantee.
"Other battery makers state that their product 'Will out-last ', the Car,' and 'buy the battery and your troubles are over.'"
"A guarantee is only as good as its Maker,' and this should be borne in mind at all times."
The association asks the aid of the trade in reporting frauds."

Over 78 years ago the one real battle in the occupation by American troops was fought at San Pasqual in San Diego county, just eight miles east of Escondido. Few motorists on their way to or from San Diego over the inland route pause long enough to take the short ride to the scene of the fight where the weared troops of Kearney, just a few more than a hundred were defeated by a force of mounted Californians, losing eighteen killed and nine wounded.
Leaving Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in June, 1846, Kearney brought his small force through to Warner’s Ranch, encountering many hardships on the way. After resting up for a day or two, the “army” sought to join Commodore Stockton at San Diego. At San Pasqual, on Dec. 6, 1846, they encountered Californiaans, and though their powder was wet, Kearney foolhardily ordered a charge. The result was not in doubt for a moment, and the defeated Americans were forced to camp in the cactus thickets for the night. Next day they continued on as far as Bernardo and camped on a small hill, Kit Carson and two companions slipping away to San Diego and securing aid from Stockton.
After a great deal of research, the actual site of the battle has been determined and at present a temporary signboard, erected on the north side of the winding road in the San Pasqual Valley, marks the spot where the weared troops spent a restless night after the battle. The picture above shows the Franklin Camel 11, famous scout car of the southwest, on the site of the historic battlefield. Though the forces engaged were small, and the outcome of but little importance as far as American occupation was concerned, it is one of the highlights of California history and motorists should by all means visit the battlefield when making a trip to the southern county.

2ND QUARTER SALES OF HUPP NEW RECORD
Sales records set by the Hupp Motor Car Corporation do not stand long. Sales for the first quarter of 1923, which materially exceeded all previous Hupmobile records by a substantial margin, were smashed by those for April, May and June—the second quarter—it is announced in Detroit by Charles D. Hastings, president and general manager of the corporation.
As a result of these two new records made so far this year, Hupp continues far ahead of its 1923 schedule of 40,000 cars. Sales for the first six months were in excess of 24,000 cars, according to incomplete reports, compared with 17,689 for the earlier period a year ago, which, up to that time, was by far the greatest half year business the corporation had done. Export sales for the first six months were nearly equal to those for the entire year of 1922.

Turns Toward U.S.A.

ABOARD THE U.S.S.HENDERSON WITH PRESIDENT HARDING
July 21.—Southward bound today,
his Alaskan tour virtually completed,
President Harding is convinced there is little "wrong" with the territory.
Alaska has numerous grievances concerning the administration of its affairs at Washington, but these mainly simmer down to departmental methods and policies and are not of such a nature as requires radical or extra legislation from the new congress.
According to members of the official party, President Harding stated publicly he could find little wrong with the territory. Last night in addressing a street meeting in Cordova, he said:
"I came north to find out what the United States is. In two weeks I have not seen poverty. I think you are a fortunate people."
The fisheries problem which is Secretary Hoover's chief concern, will probably be met by tightening government regulations concerning activities of the canneries Alaskana are anxious to build up the pulp industry themselves but are unwilling to see it done by rockless exploitation of the forests. CARE OF BATTERIES
Do not lay "B" batteries on their side, because in this position the life of the battery will be shortened considerably. Batteries should be placed in a horizontal position, and in a cool place.
LIGHTING SWITCH POSITIONS
Always throw the switch blade of the lighting switch to the lower clip when the receiving set is not being used, and to the upper clip when sounds are being received. When the blade is in the lower clip, it makes a "lightning rod" of the antenna.
COAST SALES RECORD DOUBLING
That the Pacific Coast region is practically doubling its sales of motor vehicles is indicated by the figures given out by John Perrin, of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, who reports the sales of passenger cars in five of the states of this far west district during the first four months of 1923 and 1922 to have been as follows:

OPEN GOLF COURSE IN RUMANIA
(By International News Service)
BUCHAREST, July 21—Despite great popular protest it seems that Rumania is going to go in for golf.
After a year of obstruction, led by anti-foreign groups, the first golf course and club has been officially opened in Rumania, with the King and Queen officiating.
An American engineer, Colonel Greble, conceived the idea of introducing golf and country club life into Rumania. His idea was met with the greatest hostility and it looked for a time as though public opinion would prevent the establishment of the golf course. By sheer pertinacity and at some personal risk Colonel Greble pushed his idea through.
Rumania now has facilities for golf. It remains to be seen how fast the fever will spread.
Far as is California already ahead of its own total figure for all of last year, it is very much further ahead of its rivals as compared with the passenger car registrations to the states, which were the runners up to California, the leader in 1922, their figures having been. New York, second, 779,965; Pennsylvania third, 736,916; Ohio, fourth, 741,000; Illinois, fifth, 686,466; Michigan, sixth 518,534.
How far California will pass the million mark by the end of the year is indicated by a gain of about 80 per cent in sales of new passenger cars during the first five months of 1923 as compared with sales of them up to the end of May in 1922. If this proportion should still hold good California's passenger car registration figures should not be far from a million and a half this year.
In 1922 there were sales of 98.562 new passenger cars in California in the last 7 months of the year, and a total of 150,628 for the 12 months. This means that 34.5 per cent of the cars sold were marketed in the first five months. If this proportion holds good this year California should be able to point with pride to sales of very close to a quarter of a million of new passenger cars in 1923 or to be proportionately more accurate 232,000 to them.
