MILLION FORDSONS,
FORDS BY JULY 15
Sales of Ford cars and trucks in the United States for the month of May totalled 171,306, according to a report just issued by the Ford Motor Co., received by Sid McGraw, the Ford, Fordson and Lincoln distributor.
The May sales were more than 5,500 greater than those of April, due to increased output.
Production has been the only limiting factor in the sales of Ford cars and trucks since January, for all times orders on hand have been in excess of the manufacturing capacity of the company, great as it is.
The high production schedule has been in effect the last few months, however, permitted May to show a gain of 44,243 retail deliveries over the corresponding month of last year, and it marks the 14th consecutive month in which sales have gone over 100,000.
May deliveries bring the total Ford sales in this country up to 732,850 cars and trucks for the five months from January 1 to June 1, an increase of 322,005 over the same months a year ago, and a record-breaking sales figure.
Under the constantly growing demand, Ford sales for the present year will pass the million mark in July, a figure which would already have been attained had it been possible for the company to bring production up to orders.
CHANGE BOARDING HOUSE
REDDING, June 23.—Because of a shortage of honeyladen flowers in Southern California, three carloads of bees, totalling 10000 hives, have been shipped from Los Angeles to Codora, near here, to feed on Glenn county clover.
The bees will be returned to the Southern part of the State after feeding here for the summer.
Business of Local Shop Growing Fast
Illustrating the way in which the Automotive Electrie Co., has grown, George H. Ennis now is employing four men compared with the one man with which he started. The magneto works alone is keeping one man busy.
The charging set of the concern is working day and night, says Ennis and its capacity is 50 batteries. So far this month, Ennis says, he has averaged one new car per day day.
The company takes care of the battery and electrical equipment of the Chevrolet, Durant and Star, Hupmobile, Dodge, Buick, Cadillac, Reo, Franklin and Nah.
NEW TIRE MAKING METHODS NOW USED
Many improvements now are being embodied in the United States tires, says Charlie Mann, authorized distributor in Anaheim.
For example: Sprayed rubber—the first actually pure rubber used in cord tires; the new web cord, which is minus the tie threads that saw the cord into; the new flat band method of tire construction, to ensure equal angles, equal lengths, equal tension and equal service in all the cords of the tires.
The cord tires are immersed in latex liquid, which penetrates to every part of the cord. A film of natural rubber is used to web the cords together.
Hardly less necessary for the camper and driver on long trips are good spotlights, trouble lenses with extension cords, campers, oil cans, Boyce motometers, and tire patches.
Mann carries a complete line of campers' and tourists' accessories.

FAKE CHEMICALS BATTERY MENACE
There are a dozen and one fake chemicals on the market by means of which, the makers allege, a battery can be charged in much less time than the usual time, says A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot. Bevillard warns his many patrons, and the public in general for that matter to avoid such fluids.
He also reminds people that it is better to put water into the battery more frequently than to fill it at one time.
In recharging a battery, direct current must be passed through the cells in a direction opposite to that of the discharge, he declares. During this period, the lead sulphate on the positive plate is reconverted into lead peroxide, and the lead sulphate on the negative plate is reconverted into sponge lead. The electrolyte gradually increases in density and at the end of the charge will be of the same strength as before the discharge.
The Willard Storage Battery of Cleveland, together with most other nationally known storage battery manufacturers, have always urged that no other substances of any kind be placed in a lead sulphuric acid battery. The proper chemicals have been placed in these batteries by authorised service stations. None of these chemicals are lost through use or evaporation and nothing but distilled water should be added by their users.

Spinning Engine Cuts Battery’s Life
Here’s a lot of abuses that shorten the life of a battery, says a statement received by Robert Jensen from the Prest-O-Life battery manufacturer:
Spinning your battery several minutes at a time. A battery can do it; but it shortens its life.
Frequent starts and short runs at low speed use up current faster than the generator can renew it.
Moving a car on power from the battery, which is sometimes done in garages and in changing positions while parked.
Using headlights while car is standing also in use of lamps and spotlights of very high candle power.
Not turning off ignition switch on battery and lamps when putting car up for the night.
There may be several reasons why your engine does not start promptly—ignition switch my be turned off—engine may not be sufficiently “primed”—radiator may need water, etc. Investigate before using starter again.
Stop at the nearest Prest-O-Lite Service Station for inspection; as soon as a battery begins to “kick” or show any signs of wear.

PAY BIG PRICES FOR JAPANESE GURIOS
(By International News Service)
TOKIO, June 23 — Some idea of the advance in the prices of ethics in Japan came recently when it was announced, in Tokio, that hanging scrolls purchased 45 years ago for $8,200 yen ($4,100); had been sold for $14,500 yen ($4,100).
N. A. D. A. EXPERT SCORES LAX METHODS
Sharp criticism of merchandising methods was given this week at the Los Angeles meeting of the National Automobile Dealers’ Assn.’ Some 400 were present. The principal speakers were General Manager C. A. Vane; Percy E. Chamberlain, a service expert, whose set topic was “How an Automobile Dealer Can Get the Money and Keep It.” J. S. Knok on salesmanship; President C. H. Gamble of Chicago, vice-president of the association “What Constitutes an Automobile Dealer?” and F. W. A. Vesper of the Vesper-Bulck Co., Chicago, on “Obligations of a Dealer.”
The Los Angeles Assn.’ was in charge of the meeting.
General Manager Vane declared in his speech:
“The automobile dealers of the United States have lost the confidence of the buying public through lack of policy, carelessness and in some cases downright dishonesty.”
“In one city the dealers had mortgaged and remortgaged cars to the extent that a buyer had to take a lawyer with him to find out if the dealer could legally sell the car.”
“Last year the dealers of the country lost $100,000,000 on used cars because they didn’t understand their business.”
“I never heard of a dealer going broke on new cars, but any number of them do so on used cars.”
“They sold $3,000,000,000 worth of merchandise last month and less than 10 per cent of the men in the business made a profit.”
“If a car was a lemon when it was new it’s sure to be a cheese when it’s old.”
“The greatest menace to the business is the ‘fly-by-might’ dealer who comes in in the spring and goes out in the fall.”
“The business outlook for 1923 is mighty good for good autos and good dealers.”

Abelgas, returning to their home in the Philippines to take up public health work in the East Cross chapter. Both the young women have been studied at Columbia University, in New York.
PAY BIG PRICES FOR JAPANESE CURIOS
(By International News Service)
TOKIO, June 23 — Some idea of the advance in the prices of curios in Japan came recently when it was announced, in Tokio, that hanging scrolls purchased 15 years ago for 8,200 yen ($4100), had been sold for 145,900 yen ($72,950). Thus Mr. Hayakway's investment in the scrolls alone profited his family approximately $64,080.
Mr. Hayakway's collection of scrolls and curios made the record price for all curio sets sold in Japan of 1,480,689 yen ($740,344.50), the highest previous price realized at a curio sale being 1,000,000 yen or $500,000., this price being given for the celebrated collection of Baron Go. Mr. Hayakawa was until his death the President of the South Manchurian Kallway Company.
It is suggested that everybody take up aviation because "it is safer up in the air." Being up in the air doesn't make France safer.
COP FINDS BOOZE TAP IN BATH TUB
(By International News Service)
BOSTON, June 23 — A large tank containing 20 gallons of mopshine was discovered by the East Boston police attached to the bathtub in a room leading off the rear of a cigar store at No. 141 Chelsea street, East Boston.
Police suspected Julius Berkowitz, proprietor of the cigar store, of selling liquor. A search failed to reveal any of the forbidden "booze." Then Sergeant Freeman and his blue coats adjourned to a room in the rear. The sergeant was hot. He saw a nice clean bathtub and decided he would wash up. He turned on the cold water faucet. A stream of liquor flowed forth from a tank in the wall attached to the faucet.

BROAD FIRE LINES PROTECT WATERSHED
(By International News Service)
SACRAMENTO, June 23.—Autoists passing through Ukiah, Mendocino-co., have probably wondered at the white strips following the crests of some of the distant brush covered mountains to the east. The strips, according to the State Board of Forestry, are fire lines one hundred feet in width, which have been cut through the dense brush for a distance of seven miles. They completely encircle the watershed area, upon which the Mendocino State Hospital at Talmage is dependent for its water supply, and provide a means whereby fires that threaten this valuable watershed may be checked.
The fire breaks were made by inmates of the Mendocino state hospital, who camped for months in the canyon. Over seven thousand acres of steep, brushy mountain land are enriched by a cleared strip which can be seen for miles around. From this strip a successful battle can be waged against any fires that come from the back country.
SON URGES DAD NOT TO APPEAL CASE
(DONOPHAN, Mo., June 23.—"I did it for my father's sake," explained Orb McKinney when he gave himself up to the sheriff here.
McKinney was convicted of killing a neighbor and sentenced to 20 years in the penitentiary. His father was going to appeal to the Supreme Court, but McKinney escaped when officers were taking him from the court house to the jail.
"I wanted to go home and tell father not to appeal because it would cost too much." he said.
