LIVING COSTS OF WORKER ABOUT SAME According to an investigation just completed by the Industrial Relations Department of the Franklin Automobile Company, the cost of living in Syracuse, N.Y., has remained practically constant during the past year, the percentage of increase amounting to only 3.07 per cent. The year 1914 was used as a base figure for comparison purposes, as was the case also with similar studies made for a number of years past by the Franklin Company. The total cost of living for the average Franklin family now stands at a figure represented by 164.28 as compared with the base figure of 100—which represented the cost of living in 1914. Since July 1, 1922, when the last study was taken, food has advanced 3.8 per cent, while clothing has increased in price 11.1 per cent. The price of fuel, sundries and shelter has remained constant during the past year. Local real estate men say that while it is true that rents have increased in apartments renting from fifty dollars up, rent increases have been infrequent in houses or flats which rent from twenty-five dollars to forty-five dollars, which scale of rent would probably be typical of the average Franklin family. Sundries, as far as the Franklin investigation was concerned, include a number of miscellaneous items such as insurance, medicine, dental attention, church contributions, street car fare, tobacco, candy etc. In arriving at the various figures and average Franklin family was taken into consideration, this family consisted of father, mother and three children ranging in ages from seven to fifteen years. W. P. Chrysler Buys More Maxwell Stock Official announcement is made that Walter P. Chrysler has largely increased his holdings in the Maxwell Motor Corporation and that he will be permanently and exclusively associated with the corporation from this time forward. Chrysler was retained nearly three years ago as chairman of the board of directors to undertake the development and upbuilding of the Maxwell-Chalmers properties, but did not relinquish his other important activities or enter into an exclusive arrangement or agree to a permanent association. Chrysler is looked upon within the motor car industry as one of the half dozen great executives whose movements are always of considerable significance. Before associating himself with Maxwell he was president and general manager of the Buiek Motor Company, and later vice-president of General Motors. His definite, permanent identification with Maxwell-Chalmers is expected to arouse widespread interest among automobile men. Read Plain Dealer Want Ads. ANAHEI 156 South Los Angeles Street THE PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIF. AYERAGE LIFE OF THIS CAR 8 YEARS The cost for repair parts to the owners of the 117,356 Hupmobile in use throughout the world in 1927 reached the remarkably low level of $15.53 per car. It is announced by the Hupp Motor Car Corporation, following compilations of a great mass of data. The Cadillac Garage Co., local distributors, have made the statement public. Costs of repair parts to Hupmobile owners last year dropped to the lowest level that they have ever attained since the corporation began recording these figures in 1916, it is also stated. "The real significance of these figures is not what they represent but a trifle more than $1.00 per month per car," declares Charles D. Hastings, president and general manager of the Hupp corporation. "Rather, it is that they cover not only the current series of R cars, but every single Hupmobile in use. Included in the figures are thousands of Hupmobile which are more than eight years old and still more thousands which have served continuously more than six years. If we had included in the list only the series R cars, our present models, the basic design by which we began manufacturing nearly six years ago, it is certain that the repair cost would have been found to be even lower. Hundreds of Hupmobile still in use were produced before 1910 or before. "Another discovery of vital importance brought to light in checking the mass of data is that the average life of the Hupmobile is eight years." This compares with an average of six years for all cars. Certified Jordan In Remarkable Trip A few weeks ago the Jordan Motor Car Company announced a new national policy for the sale and rebuilding of used Jordans. Proof NEW WILLYS-KNIGHT MODEL WONDER CAR To no Willys-Knight car ever put forth by the Willys-Overland Co. has motordom given a warmer reception than to the new Country club model. The admiration it has aroused rivals in fact the praise bestowed on the famous Willys-Knight soupe-sedan, when it was brought out last January. Wherever it has been placed on view it has drawn crowds of interested auto fans. The "Country Club" will undoubtedly fill a gap in the Willys-Knight range of models which is now complete from every angle. The new car stands cut distinctly as a car distinguished in its particular field and expresses the sports motive with a degree of taste seldom seen on American roads. It is one of the finest examples of sport motor car construction, complete in every detail that has been shown to motorists this year and a wide spread demand is being felt for this car in every section of the country. The "Country Club" aptly typifies the demand of motorists for a car that comes direct from the factory, completely equipped. HUDSON CARS CUT FOR SEVENTH TIME Hudson cars are reduced $75 to $100, according to a wire received by R.W. Townsend of R.W. Townsend, Inc., distributors in Anaheim and Santa Ana. This makes the seventh time, according to Townsend that the company has lowered prices in approximately two years. The Hudson sedan, for example, has been reduced $610 in this period and the other cars in proportion. Townsend declared: "The company is following a policy it announced when price declines started, that it would pass to the public the benefit of any decrease in the cost of production," said Townsend. Durant Motor Co. of Cal. Has Good May Profits of $1-3 per cent on stock issued are shown by the Durant Motor Co. of California in May, according to word from the company's offices in Oakland which has reached here. The Appleby Motors Co. of Anaheim and Santa Ana are the distributors of the Durant, as well as the Star and Peerless. The factory reports sales of 2344 Star cars and 766 Durants, for which the receipts were $144,771.17 with a net profit of $176,955.69 after all deductions. In April the profit was $134,174.22 or nearly two per cent on stock outstanding. VALVE-IN-HEAD MOTOR CUTS COSTS Buick Motor Company is the pioneer builder of valve-in-head-motor cars and have never changed to any other valve operation, says Art Steward of the Anaheim Auto Co. The valve-in-head motor from the first to the last has proven to be the most perfect and well balanced general purpose motor. Racing cars use it for speed. The highest speed ever obtained was made with a valve-in-head motor. Aeroplanes use it for speed and durability and it has proven to be the most dependable. Think of the wonderful tests that have recently been made with aeroplanes and all were equipped with valve-in-head motors. Buick Motor Co. uses it for economy and its dependable power and speed. It is justly proud of the record that stretches back for 20 years into motor car history. This knowledge long ago created a spirit among users of Buicks that is practically on a par. Certified Jordan In Remarkable Trip A few weeks ago the Jordan Motor Car Company announced a new national policy for the sale and rebuilding of used Jordans. Proof of the fact that this revolutionary plan is working out to be all that was claimed for it, it to be had from the story of the trans-continental trip in a used Jordan, the trip having been completed when Alfred Tordoff reached Sou. Calif., last week, having driven from Providence, R.I. The car had been driven 10,000 miles before Tordoff purchased it, and is the first Jordan bearing the mark of Jordan service plate to cross the country. This plate is affixed to a used Jordan only after the dealer has brought the car up to a set standard of rebuilding specifications issued by the Jordan factories. Tordoff left Providence 23 days ago, and did no driving at night. His total mileage for the trip is 4429 miles. No repairs of any kind were made to the car during the entire trip. The route followed was from Providence to Washington, D.C., to Pittsburgh, to Chicago, to Salt Lake City and over the Arrowhead trail to California. Tordoff is a building contractor, and expects to make his home in the Southland. According to figures he gave to J. E. Walter and Co., local Jordan dealers, Tordoff saved about half of the sum it would have cost him to bring his entire family to California by railroad. "To have come by train, would have cost approximately six hundred dollars," he said. "Which would include tickets, berth and meals for my wife, my two children and myself. The total cost of the trip in the used Jordan was about three hundred dollars. This includes all hotel expenses (we did not camp out), all costs of operating the car, and all mails." Under-Inflation Is Chief Tire Danger The evils of under-inflation of tires are discussed by the Goodyear Co. in a statement which recently reached James the Vulcanizer. "Maybe you never thought of it—but a tire doesn’t have to be flat to be under-inflated." "Probably more tires are ruined ahead of their time on account of running under-inflated than for any other reason." "Bending a wire back and forth generates heat and the wire breaks." "The same action takes place in the portance brought to light in checking the mass of data is that the average life of the Humpmobile is eight years." This compares with an average of six years for all cars. $100, according to a wire received by R. W. Townsend of R. W. Townsend, Inc., distributors in Anaheim and Santa Ana. Townsend declared: "The company is following a policy it announced when price declines started, that it would pass to the public the benefit of any decrease in the cost of production," said Townsend. "The factory has been increasing its factory product without in any way increasing its overhead, and therein is the secret of the company's ability to announce reductions. "Last year the company's output was 5400 cars per day. Today it is 10,000 for each 24 hours. Doubling of the production, with no increase in the actual overhead costs, is but one of the instances of the remarkable business management that has characterized the manufacturing company throughout its history." Here’s Cheap Tire With Lots of Rubber The Manhattan cord tire is not skimped in manufacture or in the amount of rubber used, even if it is cheaper than some other tires of equal serviceability, says Roy Mendoza of the Reliable Tire Co. The cords are sold at the ordinary prices of fabric tires and are guaranteed for 10,000 miles. Besides that, they're a good looking tire. Mendoza calls attention to the fact that the Para-Bell cord, the best tire handled by the firm, is unsurpassed in truck sizes—33x5, 34x5 and 35x5. Veteran Studebaker Run to Start July 5 Announcing a big economy and reliability contest for Studebaker cars, the shop of Harry D. Wiley, distributor in Northern Orange County, announces that a big 1919 six touring car will be entered. The contest is called the Veteran Studebaker Run and all entries must have travelled at least 50,000 miles before this. A sweepstakes trophy will be awarded besides economy and reliability prizes. The contestants will leave the Paul G. Hoffman garage at nine a.m. July 5, and go to Huntington Lake, stopping off at Curry LeBee Lodge for lunch at 12:30 and at Fresno over night. Haynes Low-Price Car in New Combine Chief Tire Danger The evils of under-inflation of tires are discussed by the Goodyear Co. in a statement which recently reached James the Vulcanizer. "Maybe you never thought of it—But a tire doesn’t have to be flat to be under-inflated." "Probably more tires are ruined ahead of their time on account of running under-inflated than for any other reason." "Bending a wire back and forth generates heat and, the wire breaks." "The same action take place in the side walls of an under-inflated tire." "Going over car tracks or rough roads the soft tire may get a blow that will badly bruise its carease. Then you can be sure the life of that tire is shortened." "You can't accurately see or feel when the amount of air gets too low." "The air should be tested regularly with a gauge." "We sell pocket pressure gauges—or we will gladly test your tires for you without charge." "We do this because we want our customers to get out of Goodyear tires all of the mileage we know is built into them at the factory." Haynes Low-Price Car in New Combine With the Dorris stockholders voting on June 14 for the merger of these three pioneer automobile builders the linking up of the Haynes Winton and Dorris companies into holding concern, the new Consolidated Motors Corporation has actually accomplished. Public interest in the new 000,000 corporation continues sustained. Curiosity akin to eagerness is in evidence as to just how details have been worked out, hint having yet been given beyond the intimation that the Haynes would be the "low priced car" of the combination, with the Winton Billings In. CLOSED CHEVROLET'S NOW OUTSELL OPEN Chevrolet sedans and coupes are selling rapidly, the local branch of the Frank P. Taggard Co. announced this week. Seven coupes were sold and delivered last week in three days from the Anaclim and Fulleton branches. Last Saturday five cars were sold and delivered from the Anaheim branch alone. Closed car sales now compose the majority of the total. More Chevrolet cars were sold in San Francisco during May than any other make of cars. "Today, Chevrolet Motor Co. is repre sented in the country by more than 10,000 dealers, associate dealers, and parts depots, and a vigorous campaign has been under way for months to enlist independent garages into the army of workers prepared to render service with genuine Chevrolet replacement parts, says a company statement. "Obviously a company with a million owners will continue the policy which has made it a success; therefore the millionth Chevrolet is in itself a guarantee to all owners and future Chevrolet owners that they will continue to secure the utmost for every dollar invested in Chevrolet for economical transportation." Staff Correspondent) LOS ANGELES, June 23.—Phonograph records of short sermons by Aimee Semple McPherson, reknown ed pastor of the Angelus Temple, the Church of the Four-Square Gospel, at Echo Park, will be sent to spread the Gospel to the four corners of the earth. Mrs. McPherson has achieved what Billy Sunday found impossible—impressing the speaking voice on a phonograph record—and a number of eight-minute sermonsettes are being recorded for her. "By distributing these records wherever phonographs are known," says the famous woman evangelist, "I hope to spread the four-square Gospel throughout the world. These sermonettes also may be used where scores of eager, enthusiastic young men and women are being fitted to carry the message of Christ in the far places of the world."
