EDITORIAL AND FEATURES An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul V. Hester Editor and Publisher NO HAND AT THE HELM A great ship threading its way through ocean waters, and threading truly from port to port, with no human hand at the helm; Sounds uncanny, doesn't it? But it's true. A gyroscopic steering device has been invented, and it is operated successfully on the steamship Harry Luckenbach in Pacific waters. The navigating officer of a vessel employing it fixes the course to be sailed and the device holds the ship to that pathway with no aid other than its own mechanism. It is a great invention, and its possibilities are unlimited. Suppose, for instance, it had been in existence and could have been employed by the British when they sought to bottle up the German fleet in the Kiel canal. It would have accomplished the end sought and saved many lives. It is even more valuable as a contribution to peaceful process than it is to war—thank God for that! It relieves men to other duties on shipboard, and it makes no mistakes nor sleeps at the wheel. Its mission is security. A good Colorado bishop says we are crawling through the muck and mire of the reptilian stage of spirituality. Uncharitable and perhaps true. But in material things—the invention and application of things beneficial to material progress—we are certainly standing erect. And, if we are improving materially, we are losing nothing spiritually. In the long, or short, run, most things that uplift and advance mankind materially also uplift the human soul. Indeed, heaven must be smiling with approval on many, many of the things we are accomplishing now. In time of peace, apply the mottoes of war, seems to be the State Department's idea of high grade diplomacy. A separate treaty with Germany, lone negotiations with Turkey, a commission in Mexico, and mariners at Genoa indicate great faith in the proverb, "Divide your enemies and conquer." WATCH THE SQUIRREL Henry Ford says he is not a candidate for the presidency. W. G. McAdoo is fearful, that if he make a public speech, someone will accuse him of seeking the presidency. A separate treaty with Germany, lone negotiations with Turkey, a commission in Mexico; and wariness at Genoa indicate great faith in the proverb, "Divide your enemies and conquer." WATCH THE SQUIRREL Henry Ford says he is not a candidate for the presidency. W. G. McAdoo is fearful, that if he make a public speech, someone will accuse him of seeking the presidency. Oscar Underwood says he never told anybody that he desired the presidential nomination, and Bob LaFollette says he isn't thinking of himself as presidential timber. Remember the apple pie story Artemus Ward told many years ago? No? Well, once on a time four men went hunting. They roamed the woods during the morning, and, at noon, met beside a huge log to eat their lunch. Very soon all the food was gone save one inviting cut of apples pie. Henry said he didn't want the pie, Bill refused it, Oscar was off of apples pie forever and Bob couldn't digest it. As each refused the cut, he picked up his gun and took his separate way into the woods. Soon the apples pie, alone and lonely reposed on the log. Each man, as soon as he was out of sight of his companions, promptly dropped to his knees and began to stealthily crawl toward the log with the purpose of getting the pie. All four arrived within sight of the succulent morsel at the same moment and each gizzed on it with covetous eyes. Just as each was about to raise and grab it, a black squirrel (dark horse) you see) ran down the log and siezed the pie and scampered up a tree with it. Chagrin for the hunters. Also embarassment and suppressed language of a kind. The presidency is a very juicy piece of pie. The men who do not seek it are now preparing to sneak up on it and grab it while no one else is looking. But keep your eye on the squirrel. The 1924 national political campaign should be neither apathetic nor epithetic. The issues of the 1924 national political campaign should be life important issues. China's brigands should be suppressed—or at least should be diverted to less strenuous forms of profiteering. Political bossism is not rife in this country as it once was. An intelligent, independent electorate will not stand for it. If there is a word to express the quality which Dodge Brothers have striven, above all else, to build into the Touring Car, it is again—dependable. Indeed, it is not too much to say that the word dependable has come to be definitely associated, the nation ever, with Dodge Brothers Touring Car—and the other vehicles bearing their name. Nor have Dodge Brothers built this enviable reputation through advertising. They have built motor cars, so dependable in fact that the word has presented itself automatically to the public mind.
