The picnic took place near the Alta Vista camp, and with the trip included occupied from Saturday noon until Sunday afternoon. Riley says the picnic was in line with the concern's policy which heeds the saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." Two-thirds of Riley's force are off duty every Saturday, alternating from week to Tire Repair Methods Have Changed Greatly The method of repairing tires particularly of re-treading them, is considerably changed from what it was 10 years ago, says G. B. Daniels of Daniels and Williams, vulcanizers, and distributors of Brunswick tires in Northern Orange County. Daniels came to Anaheim on Feb. 10, 1918, and has been repairing tires ever since. The old method of re-treading tires, he says, was the pot cure method. The casings were put into a big kettle, and kept there under steam a time proportioned to the size of the tire. In each casting was placed a core, which kept the tires in shape, and the whole was wrapped up in cloth. The dry cure method came into vogue five or six years ago. Three different cures are used in the process, the machinery consisting mainly of quarter molds into which the casting is placed. Formerly the rib mold was used, but now the non-skid mold is the popular one. APPLEBY MOTORS CO. PART INTEREST SOLD Forrest F. Stillivan and R. L. Joyner have purchased a part interest in the Appleby Motors Co., Durant, Star and Peerless distributors, and taken active management of the concern. Joyner will be in charge of the Santa Ana branch of the business. The two men come from Indianaapolis, where both have had considerable experience. The personnel of the force remains unchanged, according to present plans. Stillivan has been connected with various auto factories, including Nordyk & Mormon, Harry C. Stutz, National Motor Car Co., and the Apperson at Kokomo, Ind. ANAHEIM AGENT IS SMALL FACE Anaheim has a little of its own. Nor have Dodge Brothers built this enviable reputation through advertising. They have built motor cars, so dependable in fact that the word has presented itself automatically to the public mind. Dunlop of the Nu-Way Tire Co. points out trade announcements that appeared this week to the effect that the British were developing cotton production thruout the empire and buying up cotton with the apparent view of a cotton corner in the future like the rubber corner now existing. Britain, which has yielded on payment of its loan, apparently is taking means such as this to regain its financial equilibrium. The increased price which the United States will have to pay for rubber will make up more than the interest on the Brit. Firm Now Handles 3 Grades of Tire With the addition of the Manhattan cord tires to its line, the Reilable Tire Co. now has a high priced medium priced and low priced tire for its patrons. The Para-Bell cord remains the principal high quality casing and tube put out, while the Apex enables buyers of limited means to obtain a good cord or fabric tire at a low rate. Roy Mendosa continues to receive reports of wonderful mileages from purchasers particularly of Para-Bell tires. The chemical treatment of the Para-Bell casing enables it to withstand usage that would destroy the ordinary tire. Mendosa has a number of casings that have gone thousands of miles, and still are in excellent condition. BURNISHING MACHINE IS "GOING OVER BIG" The new Red Devil self aligning burnishing machine, which has been taken on by several garages, is "going over big," says C. J. Nenno of the Nenno accessories store. The device fills a long felt need. It enables a repair man to fit oversize pistons to cylinders without removing engine from the car when the variations do not exceed five thousandths of an inch. Cylinders slightly tapered, out of round, or with shoulders worn by pistons or rings, may be made round, straight and true with the machine. A very accurate lasting fit can be attained at a great saving over all other present methods. Red Devil burnishing compound for fitting cast iron, aluminum, magnite, lynite, steel and semi-steel may be used freely, cleansed easily, and stops cutting when cylinder oil is applied. It is scientifically developed. It is absolutely guaranteed to contain no abrasive such as emery, carbonum, ground glass, or anything that would in any way injure the cylinders, by leaving a harmful deposit in the pores of the walls, which comes to the surface after the engine has been assembled and put into operation. SALES AT RECORD BUT GOING HIGHER Sales of Jordan and other cars, which already are greatly in excess of last year, "will rise with the temperature", Edward S. Jordan, president of the Jordan Motor Car Co., predicts, in a survey of the motor car industry, received by the J. E. Walter Co., Jordan, Willys-Knight, Overland distributor. Wages are higher, the supply of commodities is still short of the demand, money rates are satisfactory and the Federal Reserve ratio never better. The majority of people have forgotten that the average man does not buy a straw hat until the weather gets warm. The young man's fancy does not begin to function until the ice goes out of the eastern end of Lake Erie. Ice cream does not sell in as big quantities in a cold spring as on a warm Decoration Day. People up to the first of May wore their winter clothing, including winter overcoats. The roads throughout those states where the good road movement has not yet fully penetrated, are still undesirable for motor car travel in the early part of May. The human element in business is too often overlooked. It was the human element which brought business back after the depression, at a much faster pace than any statistician could maintain. "Housewife" is an ancient word, but we moderns need a word to fit those who never stay in the house.
