AUTO CLUB SCORES RECKLESS SMOKERS Complete abstinence from smoking stares the motorists of this part of the state in the face if they are planning to tour any of the forest reserves, according to a warning just issued by the Auto Club of So. Calif. Unless there are fewer forest fires and a great deal less carelessness on the part of automobile parties, a smoking ban will be placed on some of the greatest vacation areas in America. Police powers belonging to forest reserve supervisors have been greatly increased at Washington and it is entirely within the jurisdiction of the reserve supervisors to say whether or not smoking of pipes, cigars or cigarettes within the limits of the Angelus or Cleveland forest reserves, shall be permitted. An intensive investigation of early summer forest fires springing up in certain parts of So. Calif. has developed the evidence that a large majority of these fires have started from carelessly thrown cigarette stubs falling into dry grass along the road. In view of the fact that tramps using the roads do not smoke the type of cigarette which burns on and on forever until exhausted, and that motorists do, has led the forest officials to believe that the motorist is largely at fault. No such ban has yet been placed on the forest reserves of the southern part of the state, say the Auto Club officials, but as during June and July more fires are found, such a contingency is entirely possible. If the water sheds continue to be menaced by forest fires, should such a step be taken, then more drastic means will be found to preserve them. This would indicate that motorists, hikers, and picnickers will be barred from entrance to the forest reserve. Forest reserve officials have notified the Auto Club that every possible effort is being made this year to prevent destructive conflagrations in the hills and mountains and there will be no fooling with the situation at all. Watch your step and your "smokes" in the forest playgrounds this summer! WHAT MAKES NEW CHANDLER NEW TOLD The 1923 Chandler six went up Pike's Peak on high gear by means of a new motor. That's about all the average auto fan knows about the new Chandler. To tell the story of what the new Chandler is and does Hubbell and Wimmer, Chandler and Cleveland distributors, have a very convenient little booklet, which describes in a careful detail just what makes the 1923 Chandler a new car. Incidentally the new motor, the most important novelty was tested and altered for two years before it was evolved to its present excellence. War on Bogus Parts Makers Is Still On Distributors and service stations carrying the Connecticut electric system and parts have been asked to aid in gathering up replacement breaker plates or genuine breaker plates that carry bogus breaker arms or screw points, says George H. Ennis of the Automotive Electric Co., exclusive distributors in Anaheim. The Connecticut Telephone & Electric Co., the manufacturers announce that they have won one suit against "the pirates" and will win another suit as soon as they can get further evidence. Units must have seen service, and owners of cars having the Connecticut system who have suffered from bogus parts are asked to aid the company and distributors. DODGE PROVES DEPENDABLE CAR J. W. Sackett thinks so well of the results he obtained from his 1922 Dodge touring car a year ago, when he went on a long tour thru the Northwest, including Montana, where his old home is located that he is going to make the same trip again. His upkeep costs last summer was only a few dollars outside of oil and gas, he told Charley Mann, the Dodge distributor in Anaheim, and vicinity. Sackett wants a car he knows in dependable, and declares he has one in the Dodge. When in need advertise in the Plain Dealer. By SA The ceys owe all turned to days. FIRST NATIONAL BANK AMERICAN SAVINGS BANK of Anaheim THE PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIF. Sargum Sproutings By SARGUM SPROUT The eyes of the fighting world are all turned to Shelby, Montana, these days. Jack Dempsey is working out at Great Falls, while Tommy Gibbons is doing his training in Shelby. Jack is slimming would-be fighters all over Great Falls. Jack is hard on his training partners, knoikng them east and west, north and south at every chance. His camp resembles a construction gang camp in that there is always a steady strea mof applicants for jobs and a steady stream of those who have found the work too much for them. Gibbons has not taken up real work as yet. Tommy has been fighting regularly and will not need a long training grond. Over in Jersey City, July 12th, Jess Willard will take on the South American bull, Louis Firpo, in a 12-round elimination contest. The winner will get a crack at Dempsey providing that worthy gets by Gibbons. If Gibbons wins the chances of a title go between him and the Willard-Firpo victor will be slim for long months, unless Tommy would rather fight than to reap the easy harvest of exhibition work and movie engagements. The Pacific Coast League mogula are taking their troubles into the courts. The "big five" is finding the "little three" hard to conquer. All the present trouble could be cleared by Mr. Wrigley coming clean. President McCarthy has gone beyond his powers but he may be justified in so doing. The public does not know who is to blame and may never know, our public does know that some one is not acting up to the standards of true sportsmen. Eugene Criqui, who recently acquired the featherweight championship from the U.S.A. for France, is acting the real sportman by giving America a chance to regain the honors when he meets Johnny Dundee. July 30. Criqui as champion might have returned home to France with his honors safely held for years but he is a real fighter and is willing to give the best a chance. So many of the champs of the present day love to real earnest. Her recent successes must be due to real playing and real training. Molla has the ability but fell for the bright lights and high living which no one can do and excel in athletics. Our Roy Mabee claims to have laid away his wrestling toga for good. Johnny Meyers is not heading this way very rapidly so the Mabee Meyers match looks to be a thing of dreams, but Sammy Sandow has Long Beach fans thinking he is the only wrestler on the map. Sammy tried many times to get Roy to give him a match while Roy was going so well in Anahiem. Now that Sammy is going so great in Long Beach, Mabee's friends would like to see him go to Long Peach and smoke the Beach wrestler out a bit. If Sammy will give Roy a chance we will bet our last year's neck-tie that Roy throws him twice within 60 minutes. Roy says that he is through with the game but I'll wager he is not. Local Hudson, Essex Service Hereafter A. H. Wresche, an experienced mechanic formerly of Kansas City, Mo., has joined the local branch of Townsend & Medbery as foreman of the service department which has just been opened. Wresche has been repairing autos for the past 15 years and has done much work on Hudson and Essex cars in the course of his experience. There is a pit for four or five cars at once and a well equipped bench with Wresche in charge, Hudson and Essex owners may be assured of the same high quality of service as they get in their cars when purchased. The Anaheim branch of the firm never has had a service department before. The new vehicles were unloaded on Tuesday. As is the case perhaps with most makes of car, the enclosed models are the better looking. At the same time the stock touring has more than held its own, and more of this model have been sold in Orange as in other counties, though this has been partly because the touring was first to be put on the market. As Manager Morthland points out, these Star cars, closed and open models alike, give all the impression to the driver of an expensive make of passenger vehicle. ANXIOUS TO SEE GIBBONS WORK OUT SHELBY, Mont., June 9.—Shelby is getting all hot up over the idea of seeing Tom Gibbons go through his first pages for the edification of the populace, scheduled tomorrow afternoon. Shelby waits eagerly, to ray the least, to see in action the man who has challenged Jack Dempsey for the world's heavyweight championship. The St. Paul slugger will take on three fellows, Hud Corman, Jimmy Delaney and Jack Clifford. Criqui as champion might have returned home to France with his honors safely held for years but he is a real fighter and is willing to give the best a chance. So many of the champs of the present day love to fondle their titles, never risking them only in "set up" contests until the public has grown weary of their masquerades and demands real action. It is refreshing to meet a "he-man" of the Criqui type. DEMPSEY STRUGGLES WITH FISHING POLE GREAT FALLS, Mont., June 9.—Jack Dempsey is struggling now with a fishing rod and an occasional fish. Ever since Wednesday when he was socked over the eye by Rocco Stragmalia the champion has done little or nothing in the way of gymnastics—and nothing at all with the gloves. Rather he has chosen the injured or as a good reason to lay off rigorous training until Monday or Tuesday, and meanwhile takes him self daily into a rowboat with a fish pole, perhaps two or three companions and mooches up the Missouri river, which flows against the back yard of his camp. The champion's luck is nothing to set the river afire. So far he has succeeded in adding only to his catch of sunburn. That child born with hair on the back may be Nature's first step in the matter of producing poreupine quills for pedestrains.
