PEACE IN EUROPE IS IN PROSPECT Prospects for maintenance of unbroken peace in Europe are better now than they were a few months ago. The tides are running peaceward, as it were. The Near East has threatened war, at times. But at last moment better counsels have prevailed. From present indications there will be no armed conflict there. There are no issues or controversies apparent at present which make war probable. On the contrary, in Central Europe, in Eastern Europe, and in every spot in that continent where wars usually are bred, the indications are strongly for sustained peace. Europe is taking the sober second thought. If a few more years of peace can be maintained there will be less and less liklihood of war over there. The reactions from the world war were in that appalling struggle break in full realization upon the European masses, terms of peace will be dominent. It is fervently to be hoped and prayed that this current of peace may swell with the lapse of the years and that the dangers of precipitating of another ghastly conflict may pass away. Death from automobile accidents number scores over week ends, the country over. The vital need of better protection of human life in traffic is patent to all. Death from automobile accidents number scores over weekends, the country over. The vital need of better protection of human life in traffic is patent to all. PRESIDENT TO SPEAK IN CALIFORNIA President Harding's Western tour has been arranged. His itinerary brings him to California. He will make three addresses in this state. First at San Francisco, then at Los Angeles and lastly at San Diego. This will be his first visit as president to California and the Pacific West. He will be greeted with unfeigned cordiality. The West likes him. His genial, affable manners and wholesome love of the outdoors make Westerners feel akin to him. While Mr. Harding's stay in this state will be limited, yet he will be here long enough for the people to see him and to make him feel his welcome. President Harding is not coming on a pleasure jaunt. His journey primarily is made on official business. He is going to Alaska for an intensive first hand study of its needs. Then he is going through the Panama Canal to note its fortification requirements and then on to Porto Rico, to study conditions there. But there will be opportunities along the way for Mr. Harding and his party to enjoy social amenities and the entertainment planned for them in the different localities which they will visit. California's permanent population is increasing steadily. The lure of this state is felt by the discriminating home seeker. This state's growth is the marvel of the Nation's progress and will continue to be. Home owning is increasing in California. Thanks to the favorable terms upon which real estate is sold, persons of moderate means are enabled to buy a home and pay for it in installments, without being overburdened. COMMENTS OF THE PRESS EDITORS ARE SAYING PASSING OF DELMONICO'S—New York Evening Post. New York without a Delmonico's would be so hard for old-timers to imagine that they will clutch at the announcement that the closing of the famous restaurant may be only temporary. Geographically, there have been many Delmonico's. The old downtown establishment at Beaver and Williams streets, with the classic portico brought from Pompeii by Lorenzo Delmonico and built in after 1845, has been known to generations. Even in 1840, Delmonico's was one of the favorite resorts of fashion. Just before the Civil War broke out Delmonico's was on Broadway, a little higher up, neighboring to the Irving Hotel. In 1870 it as at Fourteenth street and Fifth avenue, where its was the scene of many a famous political as well as social gathering. A quarter century later and it was at Madison Square. Then came the removal to Forty-fourth street. Will its new home—if it finds one—mark a continuance of its northward march? It has always catered largely to the before-theater and after-theater crowds, and the theater section necessarily determines the location of an exclusive restaurant. For the vicissitudes suffered by historic Shanley's, Murray's, Delmonico's and other restaurants the advent of prohibition is but a partial explanation. A full inquiry would probably reveal it as the last and perhaps not the greatest of several factors. The multiplication of rich hotels, many of them with one of the favorite resorts of fashion. For the vicissitudes suffered by historic Shanley's, Murray's, Delmonico's and other restaurants the advent of prohibition is but a partial explanation. A full inquiry would probably reveal it as the last and perhaps not the greatest of several factors. The multiplication of rich hotels, many of them with highly esteemed restaurateurs, must have been one of the chief reasons. Delmonico's had to maintain private rooms, ball-rooms, and no on upon its restaurant revenue alone; a hotel can divide its overhead among numerous sources of revenue. The rise of the lunch club may have its share. The changes in social habits consequent upon the growing vogue of the weekend, the increased use of the automobile, and perhaps a lessened interest in refinements of cuisine, would have to be considered. Nearly all the high-class London restaurants are connected with hotels—the Ritz, Carlton, Claridge, Cecil, and so on. But we have will have to spare an old name like Delmonico's. The elimination of some of its chief rival restaurants have left it in a position where a shrewd management could FIRST NATIONAL BANK AMERICAN SAVINGS BANK of Anaheim ES nday isher THE ORANGE COUNTY Plain Dealer SA Subscri Entered NOT ONLY "POOR RELATIONS," BUT ALMOST WORTHLESS I CAN DO NOTHING FOR YOU - YOU MUST WORK OUT YOUR OWN SALVATION! In the last ten years according to report the cost of living has advanced 68 per cent. And it is surprising how many people are willing to pay it to stay alive. It has been a dull week for the Prince of Wales. His engagement has been announced only three times. POEMS THAT LIVE EVENING SOLACE The human heart has hidden treasures, In secret kept, in silence sealed; The thoughts, the hopes, the dreams, the pleasures, Whose charms were broken if revealed. And days may pass in gay confusion, And nights in rosy riot fly. While lost in Fame's or Wealth's illusion, The memory of the Past may die. But there are hours of lonely musing, Such as in evening silence come, When, soft as birds their pinions closing, The heart's best feelings rather home. PARAGRAPHS The cost of living doesn't seem to have much effect on its popularity. Poor old Germany keeps tottering from one successful bluff to another. Well, we missed our regular coal strike, in May, but it was too cold to go fishing anyway. Another good way to find out if Germany can pay is to persuade her to try it. We wonder if Abraham and the other old-timers in Heaven scold about the horde of allens coming in. Another very good intelligence test is an invitation to express your opinion of a new baby. When the war is paid for, think what a nice time Congress will have with the new source of revenue. It doesn't cost much to start in business now. Ten dollars will buy a very good sucker list. Woman's intuition is a wonderful thing, but it doesn't show up well when a bride uses it in making biscuit. Not all of the peoples of the earth are a menace to civilization. Some of them haven't been civilized yet. The reason ideas get into some heads slowly is because they have to wedge themselves in between the prejudices. But there are hours of lonely musing, Such as in evening silence come, When, soft as birds their pinions closing, The heart’s best feelings gather home. Then in our souls there seems to languish A tender grief that is not woe; And thoughts that once wrung groans of anguish, Now cause but some mild tears to flow. And feelings once as strong as passions, Float softly back—a faded dream; Our own sharp griefs and wild sensations, The tale of other’s sufferings seem. Perhaps they were right who accused Congress of sleeping through the last session. There is a surplus in the Federal treasury. Uncle Sam believes in the open door but insists that they shake themselves dry before coming in. One trouble with European diplomats is that they seem unable to distinguish between an idea and an appetite. ANAHEIM BOOK STORE Books and Stationery 228 E.
