BOOST OF 20 PER CENT IN TIRES? Another boost of 20 per cent in prices of casings, tubes and repair materials before June 1 was forecast here on Thursday by certain dealers, who declared that they had received official word to that effect. This will bring the total advance since Jan. 1 to 42 1-2 per cent. Whether the advance will be general, affecting all or most tires made, depends upon the action of the Big Five. It is understood that the most prominent member of the latter has secretly announced that it will be in line for the boost. Certain important independent manufacturers this week sent word to local dealer representatives of the forthcoming advance. The third gain is directly due to exhaustion of crude rubber supplies and the higher costs of crude since the British Crude Rubber Restriction Act took effect Nov. 1, 1922. Even on April 19, a month ago, crude rubber since the date mentioned had risen 150 per cent. TO LET ANOTHER STUDEBAKER SALES Harry D. They 17 include seven sedans, three coupes and seven touring cars. As indicated, closed models continue popular. The manufacturers in fact claim to have been the first to shift strongly to the closed car and the five-passenger sedan has been been chiefly responsible. The sedanette, the latest member of the closed car family, also is attracting much attention. It is designed especially for country club, social, shopping and general utility purposes and as an extra car for women. The coupe is the lowest priced quality car on the market, according to the makers. TO LET ANOTHER PASS STATE LAW Stubborn auto driver who think they are standing on their legal rights, when as a matter of fact, they have no rights, are going to get into trouble this summer in traveling mountain highways if they don't watch out, warns the Auto club of So. Calif. A number of fetters have been received by the So. Calif. club from frate auto owners who claim that many motorists are not aware of a clause in the state motor vehicle act to-wit; section 20 (D), which reads as follows: "It shall be the duty of the driver rider or operator of a vehicles about to be overtaken and passed to give way to the right in favor of the overtaking vehicle, on suitable and audible signal being given by or on behalf of the operator, driver, or other person in charge and control of such overtaking vehicle if such overtaken vehicle be a motor vehicle. This points out that while it is an act of courtesy to move over and give half of the road to someone who wants to pass you, it is also a state law." It is reported that one of the star first basemen can't get the low balls. Ah, well; there are dozens of stars who can't get highballs: The sedanette, the latest member of the closed car family, also is attracting much attention. It is designed especially for country club, social, shopping and general utility purposes and as an extra car for women. The coupe is the lowest priced quality car on the market, according to the makers. Overland Red Bird Is Wonderful Sport The Overland Red Bird, the latest addition to the Overland line, handled by the J. E. Walter Co., is creating much excitement among auto fans. The engine is as economical as ever, and it is larger and more powerful. The wheel base has been lengthened to 106 inches, with a spring base of 136. A durable khaki tan top crowns all. There is plenty of nickel to make the car the sport that it is. The maroon finish and Spanish leather upholstery are such as ordinarily may be found only on much higher priced cars. Tires Half Worn After 14,000 Miles Roy Mendoza of the Reliable Tire Co. displayed this week a pair of Para-Bell cord tires, 30 by 3¼, which he had on his Chevrolet in Los Angeles more than a year ago. The tires were driven 14,000 miles and still look good for many thousands more if they are not mistreated. Mendoza has used them on trips through the mountains, to the sea, on boulevards, on dirt roads—everywhere and in all sorts of weather. They are heardly half worn, as shown by comparison with a new pair! Announcement We have been appointed the Exide Service Station for this locality. The car was in the recent Resurrection Day parade in Santa Ana. It still runs and runs pretty well, but it's a queer looking machine, representing as it were a step in the evolution of body style away from the horse drawn vehicle. There is a step in the rear, familiar to horse fanciers while the headlights are fed by gas and the side lamps by oil. There is a tubular axle in front, and the front fenders are long, gracefully sweeping things. The tires are "quick detachable," but hardly look it. The horn is a huge one of "Non-Parell" make. EXIDE SERVICE TO BE IMPROVED Devoting himself exclusively to the sale and service of Exide batteries, of which he is the official distributor in Anaheim and vicinity, B. F. Herr is prepared still further to improve his facilities. Exide batteries are particularly adapted to the motorcycle says Herr. Just how rigorous are the demands mads upon a motorcycle battery no one but a motorcycle rider himself FACTS FIGURES ON REGISTRATION As an indication of what may be expected in the use of the automobile Will H. Marsh, chief of the division of Motor Vehicles, quotes figures comparing the number of motor vehicles licensed during the first quarter of the present year against the entire year of 1922, as well as the amount of fees collected from said licenses: Number of licenses issued. Entire Year 1922 Quar. 1923 Automobile ...822,394 825,971 Trucks .....39,413 35,619 Motorcycles .....16,201 10,917 Trailers .....4,861 4,237 Transfers .....321,041 119,970 Gross receipts, Entire year 1922, $8,384,606.40. First quarter 1923, $8,889,998.76. These figures show an increase of 3,677 automobiles in a period of three months as against the total of twelve months of 1922. There has been received to date in automobile license fees an increase of $778,-047.88. The other classifications of registrations have not yet reached the amounts of 1922; the total increase from all classifications being but $505,392.36. But this shows a tremendous increase in fees received from new cars. The percentage of increased registration is low compared with the percentage of increased fees from automobiles, and the belief is that this County Now Fourth in Car Sales Is the certified used car market injuring sales of nek cars. No since says Jim Appleby, president of the Orange County Motor Car Dealers' Association, establishes of this market and also the ones at Santa Ana and Fullerton. Asuming that this association covers the County which it practically does, sales of new cars during April improved comuch that the county stood fourth place against eighth place in April last year. According to Appleby, the county's gain was the most considerable of all in the State, and Orange now follows Los Angeles, San Francisco and Alameda counties. There were 644 cars delivered tho population is less than half that of certain other counties, like Fresno, which stood lower. After the meeting this week when drawings were made for spaces in the Auto Show, the salesmen were assembled and the fact impressed upon them that the Certified Market is not a dealers' market, but a public one. FORD TRACTOR IN GROWING DEMAND TO BE IMPROVED Devoting himself exclusively to the sale and service of Exide batteries, of which he is the official distributor in Anaheim and vicinity, B. F. Herr is prepared still further to improve his facilities. Exide batteries are particularly adapted to the motorcycle says Herr. Just how rigorous are the demands mads upon a motorcycle battery no one but a motorcycle rider himself can realize. The continual vibration—the jolts and jars that rack the whole frame of the machine—are transmitted direct to the storage battery. Consequently, it is essential that this important unit must be able to withstand this abuse with a minimum of care and attention. Realizing this, the manufacturers of the Exide—with thirty-four years of storage battery building experience behind them—made an exhaustive series of experiments to determine just what construction was most suitable. No cut-down automobile battery would answer the purpose. A totally different construction was necessary. As a result, this company—the largest manufacturers in the world of storage batteries for every purpose—has produced what is unquestionably the most dependable and durable motorcycle battery ever produced for this exacting service—the Exide, type 3-KZ-8. BE PREPARED FOR OPEN ROAD CALL "We can look after the automobile needs of the camper or tourist as well as anybody in the county," says C. J. Nenno, referring to the store's equipment in preparation for the Call of the Open Road, which still will be heard for weeks yet. Tonneau windshields and wings, a canteen unit for extra gas, water and oil; camping stoves and other camping supplies; Gabriel snubbers to make the journey easy; Harvey springs, which the Nash now is to carry as standard equipment; spotlights, extra globe, fan belt, spark plugs—a dozen and one things that are commonly overlooked, but are badly needed when they are required—are in Nenno's big stock of accessories and parts. Most of these things are necessities, not luxuries, he says, and all are convenient at least. Two Batteries Per Day are Sold Sales of seven USL batteries in 3 days is reported by George H. P. HAMM, Mgr. 202 S. Los Angeles St. Anaheim SECTION TWENTY-SIXTH YEAR 800 CARS AT AUTO SHOW SAYS MOTOR WEST STORY regarding the auto exhibit in the Orange Show Motor West, which reached here Friday, says: "It is planned to make the automotive section of the Anaheim Valencia Show May 22-30, one of the most comprehensive ever held in Southern California. The automobile show tent is to be 200x350, with elaborate Egyptian decorations." The articles quotes Secretary H. O. Davis of the Orange County Motor Car Dealers' Association as declaring that nearly 300 cars will be exhibited. PIKE'S PEAK MOTOR NOISELESS IS CLAIM One of the most remarkable results obtained in the design of the Pike Peak motor is absolute freedom from the noise sometimes incorrectly called preignition but more commonly referred to as "ping." This noise has been absolutely eliminated, not only when the motor is clean but regardless of the amount of carbon accumulated, says Sam Hubbell of Hubbell & Wimmer, Cleveland and Chandler distributors. Under no circumstances is it necessary to retard the spark to eliminate this noise. The noise just simply isn't there under any conditions yet found. MILLIONTH PLATE IS ISSUED California has passed the million mark in auto registration. With the issuance of state licenses plate number 1,000,000 to Don Doig, manager of the touring bureau of the Auto Club of Southern California, California was the first state to issue a plate reaching this figure. California has the honor of leading all states in America with the number of motor vehicles owned at this time, and leads any country in the world in the number of motor vehicles registered. A telegram was received by the Auto club touring bureau from New York, which hitherto has led America in the number of motor cars registered; did not issue a 1,000,000 license in 1922 and has not yet issued one for 1923. When H. J. Bernard, manager of the Los Angeles branch of the Motor Vehicle department yesterday presented Mr. Doig with the epoch making license number, he declared that this will be the only plate probably to be issued by VECTOR IN DEMAND and industry are demands for theays George Dunton, Lincoln distributor. the Fordson as a extending in every of the country to realize the ad-ly of power farmable feature of the use of this stur-power plant in industrial activities. builders are every-Fordson to meet over, either move-and road engi-late the country are with highway con- wing demand for production is now the first three reached a total of 8,340 for ear ago. The power of the motor on hills and in pickup or acceleration is phenomenal. It is not necessary to rush any hill. Excess power is there at command. The possible range of operation in high gear is from three to 60 miles an hour, and can be accomplished without skipping or hitching at any point. Experimental motors were in constant use for many months and tests were made under every conceivable condition. Cars with Pikes Peak motor have been run from Cleveland to Pikes Peak, and all through the middle west and the east, so that all kinds of hill tests, pulling power in sand and mud, and performance on smooth as well as rough roads have been passed. Many school roofs in New York are covered with netting to permit ball games by the pupils high in the air. When in need advertise in the to $400. A telegram was received by the Auto club touring bureau from New York confirms the fact that New York, which hitherto has led America in the number of motor cars registered, did not issue a 1,000,000 license in 1922 and has not yet issued one for 1923. When H. J. Bernard, manager of the Los Angeles branch of the Motor Vehicle department yesterday presented Mr. Dolg with the epoch making license number, he declared that this will be the only plate probably to be issued by California bearing six ciphers and a one, as next year it is planned to use symbols in place of the figure. The issuance of the 1,000,000 license came as a surprise to state authorities as well as to officials of the Auto club, as it was not yet believed that California was yet ready to take the lead in the world market of automobiles. A rush order was hurried to the Los Angeles manufacturing plant where the license plates are made and special machinery was at once installed for cutting plates of one million and over. "The honor of carrying the "1,000,-000" was conferred upon the Automobile club by the state motor vehicle department as a result of the service rendered motorists of California by the So. Calif. organization in handling the distribution of licenses during the rush period just passed. Governor Richardson carries license plate number one.
