SECOND SECTION VOL. XXVI—NO. 232 DOG SAVES HOUSE FROM FLAMES Barking Arouses Hall Family to Find Back Porch on Fire The barking of Patsy, a pet canine, saved the Herman Noll residence at Albert and Zeyn-sta last night from flames. The dog had been permitted to sleep on the back porch, and this morning about 2:30 o'clock she aroused the family by her furious barking. How long she had been barking is not known, but when members of the family awoke, it was to find the back porch in flames, and the bedrom filled with smoke. They aroused the remainder of the family and turned in the fire alarm. Then they proceeded to set about fighting the fire, which they had partially extinguished when the firemen arrived. The carpet was burned off the back porch, the partition between the porch and the bedroom partially burned and other damage done. N. S. Staff Correspondent) PEKING, May 17.—The Suchow bandit kidnapping situation today assumed an even graver aspect than before when it became known that the foreign hostages are no wregarded as pawns in China's internal political situation. The briganda have widened the scope of their demands to include a settlement of all of the grievances of South Shantung against the Central government and have turned over negotiations to the chiefs of the secret societies of the whole of South Shantung. The effect of this development is to involve the whole population of one of China's geratest provinces in the affair. SANTA FE SPRINGS MAKES NEW RECORD With Oil Operators Week after week the greatest high gravity oil field in the world, Santa Fe Springs continues to break and set new records for production. The greatest oil well that the Springs field has yet produced was brought in recently by the Ambassador Oil Co. on the Baker property. The Ambassador Oil Co. is affiliated with the Wilshire Oil Co. and the Machris Bros. are credited with the bringing in of the gusher. The Baker well was completed at 4720 feet, and started off at 18,000 barrels, 35 gravity. On account of storage and pipe line facilities being limited for the present the big well was pinched to 9600 barrels. The Amalgamated Oil Co. succeeded in getting the famous Dalugge No. 1 back on production. A year ago this well electrified the oil world by starting off at 4500 barrels and producing as high as 5000 barrels for several days. The well suddenly quit producing, the apparent cause being water trouble. The trouble has been corrected and the well redrilled to 4580 came back flowing 1500 barrels, 35 gravity, clean oil and free from water. The Amalgamated's Benton No. 1 a northeast line test well has reached 4900 feet and the outlook is not particularly encouraging. The Federal Drilling Co. had a hand in the bringing in of more big production for Santa Fe Springs when the organization completed a 5000 barrel shale. The space occupied will be 8 by 10 feet. A giant stuffed lion on a revolving table will be the exhibit of the Lions club, while the Elephant Orchards Ass'n will reproduce a mammoth elephant, symbolical of its brand, that will move about on a large stage. Fraser, manager of the California Valencia Orange Show, said today that he is praying for a good rain before the end of this week, with the hope that it will clear away and bring bright skies for the entire nine days of the exposition.
