WILLIAM J. BRYAN
MAY BE MODERATOR
BY LLOYD MELLETT
(I. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
INDIANAPOIS, May 7.—Virtual withdrawal as a candidate for moderator by Dr. Hugh K. Walker, of Los Angeles, and nominating by him of William Jennings Bryan, made the selection of the Commoner of political fame as moderator of the Presbyterian church of the United States by the 138th general assembly appear certain today.
Representatives of the 987 presbyteries caught by something of the fervor that marked the entrance of the "boy orator of the Platte" into the political arena 30 years ago, were ready to follow him in a crusade of his later but still vigorous years for the regeneration of the church.
To reach the unchurched millions, to double the presbyterian church membership within ten years, was the high mark set for achievement by Bryan, but regarding his candidacy for moderator he maintained silence.
Rev. Benj. Gemmill, stated clerk of the synod of Pennsylvania, predicted with absolute certainty that Bryan would be named.
"He is the greatest single force for moral uplift and righteousness in or out of the church," he declared.
Bryan was not alone as a big figure in the assembly whose greatest activities had been in another sphere than church work. Will H. Hays, supreme arbiter of the moving picture industry and a deacon in the Presbyterian church at Sullivan, Ind., was to deliver the principal address

Musk-ox and other Artic game animals may be exterminated by Eskimos with rifles, says an explorer.
At tonight's meeting, making a plea in behalf of the minister's pension fund.
Two sensational cases whose nature threatened a rupture in the church ranks will be handled by the judicial commission and not reach the assembly floor.
One was that of Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick, a Baptist minister, who preaching in the First Presbyterian church of New York, scouted the historical accuracy of some of the tenets of the Christian faith and questioned the divinity of Christ.
The case of Rev. Thomas J. Irwin, Oklahoma pastor who obtained no-triety by marrying a couple in a swimming pool and whose defense of Jake Hamon, former Republican national committeeman from Oklahoma, shot and killed by Clara Smith Hamon, created a sensation, will also be heard.
