SPECTACULAR FILM
AT UNITED THEATER
D. W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation", in 12 reels is the attraction at United theater beginning tomorrow.
The film is based on the famous novel "The Klansman" by Thos. Dixon, Jr., but it deals more broadly in its historical side with life of the American nation than does the play or book.
"The Birth of a Nation" is the greatest and most spectacular motion picture ever produced. It cost $500,000 to produce and seven months were consumed in staging it.
"The Birth of a Nation" represents the very acme of art and realism in motion pictures. It includes the most spectacular battle scenes ever staged. In the battle scenes are shown 25,000 soldiers in action, including infantry, artillery and cavalry. In "The Birth of a Nation" explosive shells are used for the first time in the history of motion pictures. These shells are hurled from the same huge mortars that were used by the federal troops during the American civil war. The shells are blanks and were constructed especially for these battle scenes. Each shell cost $50 and more than 500 of them are used in the battles.
The task of securing Civil War artillery for the battle scenes became quite a problem. It would have been easy enough to secure the modern cannon for the production, but Mr. Griffith, who is conceded to be the world's foremost motion picture producer, insisted that artillery scenes would be a farce. The Civil War cannons were finally borrowed from the U.S. government for the occasion. Battle scenes at night showing artillery duels, the infantry in the trenches and the charges of the cavalry, are faithfully produced in the photodrama.

Battle scenes at night showing artillery duels, the infantry in the trenches and the charges of the cavalry, are faithfully produced in the photodrama.
The motion picture production of "The Birth of a Nation" carries the spectator through the Civil War and the reconstruction period that followed. It shows the causes responsible for the Civil War, and treats impartially with the problems that confronted the North and the South prior to and after the conflict.
"The Birth of a Nation" is a powerful plea for universal peace and finishes with an allegorical climax that is one of the strongest sermons against the horrors of war, that could possibly be arranged.
Included in the all-star cast presenting "The Birth of a Nation", are the following principals:
Henry Walthal, Mae Marsh, Miriam Cooper, Josephine Crowell, Spottswood Aitken, Ralph Lewis, Lillian Glash, Elmer Clifton, Robert Harron, George Seigman, Walter Long, Mary Alden, Joseph Henneberry, Sam de Grasse, Howard Gaye, Donald Crisp, William de Vuall, and Jennie Lee.
Owing to the length of the film, 3 shows will be held Sunday, the matinee starting at 2:30 with the evening exhibitions beginning at 5:30 and 8:30. Despite the great expense of engaging "The Birth of a Nation" prices of admission will not be advanced.
First Spiritual Church
Mrs. Nellie Allen and Mrs. Florence Hall will hold circle Thursday afternoon at 2:30 and evening services at 7:30 by Mrs. Allen.
