OPEN ROAD PLANS ARE OUT Southern California's, 1923 "Call of the Open Road Week," fostered by various motor car dealers, associations and scheduled for May 13 to 19, inclusive, promises to be the biggest and best ever staged. This is the opinion expressed by leaders of the movement as the time approaches for the "opening curtain" of the great annual "play" on outdoor attractions, as offered by Los Angeles and surrounding towns. Third annual event of this kind, the "Call of the Open Road" now has definitely been established as a regular yearly institution in Southern California. The idea has spread to the northern part of the state and before next year, it is anticipated, the boosting of the "Open Road" at this season may become interstate or even nation wide in its scope. As in previous observances of the "Call," the widest sort of publicity will be given the various scenic resorts lying within motoring distance of Los Angeles. Joining with the metropolis, various motor car dealers. Earlier Days Of Yosemite Are Recalled CAMP CURRY, May 5.—Interesting their respective terms as the in Yosemite Valley came to light here, when several early letter copy books kept by the venerable Galen Clarke and by W. E. cunnison, during their respective termDs as "Guardian of the Valley" were discovered by Superintendent W. B. Lewis and Accountant Francis P. Farquhar of Yosemite National Park. One of the noteworthy discoveries is that of the origin of the name given the "Happy Isles", a group of small islets one mile above Camp Curry on the Merced river, with which every Yosemite visitor is familiar. The nomenclature of the Yosemite and the origin of the names of most points of interest have long been known, but no one has ever remembered hearing how the Happy Isles" got their name. The following portion of a letter written by Guardian Dennison on October 25, 1885, to the Secretary of the state commissioners in charge of Yosemite Valley, tells the story: "There are three islets just above the bridge which have never been given a place in the Yosemite geography so far as I am able to learn, and commemorative of the emotions which I enjoyed when exploring them, I have named them the Happy Isles, for no one can visit them without for the while forgetting the The annual event of this kind, the "Call of the Open Road" now has definitely been established as a regular yearly institution in Southern California. Joining with the metropolls, various motor car dealers' associations and similar organizations of nearby cities and towns are expected to stage local festas and aid in promulgating the message. For the first time in the history of the annual event, the radio will be utilized to disseminate the gospel of utilization of the open. This, together with special automobile and open road editions of city and suburban daily newspapers, stories and pictures in local magazines, window cards and letter enclosures and every other possible means of publicity, is expected to boost the "Open" to such an extent that every person in the Southland will feel the urge to get at the wheel. I heard a concert last night and I'd swear they had a victoria attached somewhere." So stated one unbelieving local woman after hearing a radio concert, according to A. Bevillard. Willard Service station man here. What she was alluding to were the "frying" noises that occur in many radio phones. These noises have kept many a radio enthusiast awake nights trying to figure out means of eliminating them. Radio engineers have traced these "noises" to the polarization which is constantly taking place in the commonly used dry cell "B" battery. It is said that a liquid battery does not produce these characteristic sounds, because this sort of internal action does not take place. The Willard Storage Battery Co., was one of the first battery manufacturers to recognize the need for a good wet cell "B" battery. They have recently produced a rechargeable battery, each cell of which is enclosed in an individual glass jar. Extra heavy plates are insulated by this company's Threaded Rubber Insulation, and the entire group is connected in series with burned on lead connectors. Cable clamp connections, fastened to the terminals with screw make a very rigid contact with the plate circuit. 33,000 MILES ON PAIR OF PARA-BELLS Long mileage for Para-Bell trees are a common occurrence, says Roy Mendora of the Reliable Tire Co., but even Mendoa was a little bit interested when a man came in with the story of 23,000 miles on a pair of 33 by 4 tires, purchased something over a year ago. He bought a pair of them himself on the strength of the other's testimony. The 40 by $ is a 12-ply tire, by the way, says Mendora. RECKLESSNESS CHIEF CAUSE OF ACCIDENTS In a last analysis of thousands of motor-vehicle accidents throughout this part of the state, the Auto Club of So. Cal. will officially announce that recklessness and carelessness, rather than excessive speed are the main factors in bringing about auto casualties. Curb carelessness and thoughtlessness in observing California traffic rules, and recklessness and excessive speed will take care of themselves, it is pointed out. General carelessness is cataloged as: 1. Failure to give correct arm signals. ALL IS SET FOR S.A.'S BIG EVENT Final arrangements for the Resurrection Day parade and races today in Santa Ana were concluded last night at meetings of the executive committee of Santa Ana Post, American Legion, and of the Citizens' Committee, which has charge of the parade. All is O.K. the committees reported, after the gatherings. The crowd is estimated all the way from 20,000 to 40,000; the city councils of all or most of the incorporated cities of the county had seats upon the platform; scores of oddly decorated cars appeared in the parade and races; and Mieses Gladys Ingle and Eleanor Boardman moving picture stars, are scheduled to appear—these are the features of the double event. Miss Boardman is coming in an airplane, she announced. In the parade, which didn't get moving until about 11 o'clock, there were many fit subjects for an automobile museum. Los Angeles St. Anaheim Established 1912 Curb carelessness and thoughtlessness in observing California traffic rules, and recklessness and excessive speed will take care of themselves, it is pointed out. General carelessness is cataloged as: 1. Failure to give correct arm signals. 2. Cutting corners. 3. Unurping the right of way when there is a question as to who has the right. While it is the speder who is blamed for the majority of fatalities, it is the thoughtless driver who is to blame for the greater portion of accidents in which motor cars are damaged and personal injuries suffered. The Auto Club, through its safety bureau, has instituted a campaign to cut down the number of accidents which might be labeled as "careless" or "thoughtless" by issuing a large number of windshield stickers which are to be used by So. Calif. motorists. Miss Boardman is coming in an airplane, she announced. In the parade, which didn't get moving until about 11 o'clock, there were many fit subjects for an automobile museum. Fords predominated, of course, and one from a Capitrano garage, rigged up as a bucking broncho, made a strong bid for first prize. There was also a 1902 Cadillac, which made you think of the tall bicycles they used to ride, painted a gorgeous red; a 1903 Hudson; a 1911 Maxwell; and "King Tut" and "King Tut's grandfather," also Fords. Anaheim's entry, painted a bright orange, represented the California Valencia Orange Show. Plain Dealer Want Ads Get Results who admit themselves as being careful and competent drivers.
