Prices of Cars Soon To Raise
Mr. James E. Appleby, who heads the Appleby Motors Company, is of the firm opinion that the public will very shortly feel the effects of price advanced to $1245.00 f. o. b. Pacific merchandise. He has received notice from the Durant Motor Company that, effective May first, the price of the Sport Model Touring Car will be advanced to $1245.00 F. O. B. Paliff coast points. Because of the phenomenal value offered in this particular model, it has practically monopolized the volume of the Durant business on the coast, he declines, and the character and quality of the equipment on this model will not permit the factory to continue at the present price.
The manufacturers have made her role effort to cope with the increasing tendency to raise the prices of all raw materials, and have attempted through volume production to keep the retail prices as they have been in the past. Thirty-eight per cent of the plate glass manufactured is used in automobiles, and on this one commodity alone, there has been four raises in the past ninety days. There has also been substantial raises in all other materials, including rubber, sheet metal, carbon steel, and in many of the larger plants the manufacturers have seen fit to increase the price of labor.
Summbling up the situation, Mr. Appleby states that the reason why prices have not been raised sooner, is because the factories have been able to maintain an ever increasing volume of business, and the public can expect raises on nearly all makes of automobiles within the next 30 days.

Camp Trailer Tent Is Big Convenience
A camp trailer transformed into the tent which can be raised above it has been used this week as an effective piece of "window dressing" by Joe Walter, in his handsome show-train at Olive and East Center-sts.
Two beds with springs above, extending over each of the trailer's "side boards," with room in the "bottom" of the vehicle for a third and still further room on the ground beneath the two side beds for two more make this trailer, when the tent is erected, covering all, a mighty convenient thing for campers.
Below the "bottom" of the trailer is a small, white coop windows easily adjusted with ropes provide air or shut out the rain, as desired.
Walter has set up a hawk at the "tent pole."
DON'T DRIVE CAR IF YOU'RE SLEEPY
If you feel sleepy, don't drive your car! In an investigation of several thousand auto accidents in this part of the state, officials of the safety bureau of the Auto Club of Southern California have unearthed the sad fact that a great many motorists operate their cars when they should be in bed and asleep.
One driver in a southern county was discovered pursuing a zig zag course down the street by police officials on the look out for reckless autoists and when he was questioned concerning the whys and whereofs of his strange actions he admitted that he was so sleepy he didn't know what he was doing. This opened the investigation by the Auto Club into a new reason for the cause of accidents.
It was discovered that many motorists, endeavoring to make their destination in one day, will exceed the margin of safety and drive even though too sleepy to be observant.
Don't start an auto trip of any great length if you have not had enough sleep to get there without

Orange Show to See New Chalmers Cars
Developments in the Chalmers car, propelled when the Chalmers Motor Car Company was sold about four months ago to the same interests which control Maxwell, already show that the improved Chalmers models have found a special niche for themselves with the motoring public say Turton and Lumsdon, local distributor.
The new Chalmers cars will be on exhibit at the Valencia Orange show. Improvements in both body and chassis have been made throughout the entire line of six models. Power and flexibility have been made a great deal greater, and at the same time gasoline and oil mileages are increased, a combination of achievements not often possible in a motor car. Several other chassis improvements have also been made.
Body betterments are many, and easily noticed. The entire line has an appearance that is instantly attractive to the eye. Probably no other standard gives such an impression of custom smartness and individuality as does the present Chalmers.
Mounted on the 122inch chassis the new sedan is unusually spacious and comfortable when the full load of seven passengers is carried. The interior trim is in strict accord with the highest traditions of closed car luxury.
Upholstery is in gray mohair. The heavy hardware in satin finish is in complete harmony with the upholstery. Windows are large, also easy to raise or lower, and window strips are of Circassian walnut. Interior lamps consist of the conventional dome light and, in addition, two convenient reading lamps, one in each quarter panel.
WAWONA ROAD NOT TO BE OPEN SUNDAY
CAMP CURRY, April 28—The Wawona road will not be in shape to permit motor travel to the Yosemite tomorrow as expected. The Yosemite National Park authorities now state that while the road may be passable by Saturday, April 28, they do not recommend use of the Wawona route until next week.
Although road crews have been hard at work on Chowchilla mountain grades, additional rains have slowed them up, preventing the opening of the road as early as had been expected.
Other roads to the Yosemite are expected to be opened by the following dates, according to Superintendent W. B. Lewis Big Oak Flat road by June 1 (possibly earlier); Glacier Point road by June 1 (possibly earlier); Tioga road by July 15 (possibly by July 1).

NEW. FRANKLIN DEMI-SEDAN
DEMI-SEDAN THIRD FRANKLIN CREATION
"The introduction by the Franklin Automobile Company of the demi-seedan, a recent design having the advantages of both an open and enclosed car, brings to mind the fact that this is the third distinct type which had its origin in the Franklin factory, says Bob White or the Bob White Co., local Franklin dealers. "In 1912, Franklin brought out America's first sedan, a closed car for touring. Two years later, the Brougham was originated, the foreruner of the four passenger, two-door closed car now, so generally popular with all makes.
"During the short time that the demi-seedan has been offered," continued White, "national demand has consistently been greater than the ability of the factory to supply. This popularity is proof beyond question that the public has been waiting for a vehicle of this type. There is scarcely a motorist who, at some stage of his experience, has not ex-
Sensation of Reo's Record Trip Growing
By H. F. WELLER
Charles H. Bigelow, veteran road engineer and automobile man, laid out the old Los Angeles to Phoenix course some 15 years ago. At that time the two cities were connected only by mere paths through sand and ever rock-strewn desert washes. Very recently Bigelow, driving a seven passenger Reo six-cylinder stock car, fully equipped with top, windshiled and fenders and carrying a load of four passengers together with their Laggage, broke all records over the long route by way of Needles, Sligman, Prescott, and Wickenburg by a margin of one hour, 26 minutes.
Barney Oldfield, who won his famous title of world's "Master Driver" in the Los Angeles to Phoenix event of ten years ago, had previously held
MARCH RECORD WILLARD MONTH
March proved the biggest month in point of production that the Willard Storage Battery Company of Cleveland has ever had, according to an announcement just made by R. C. Norberg, vice president and general manager of the company received by A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot.
"We hardly expected to attain the volume of production now reached until later in the year," said Mr. Norberg, "'but the growing popularity of radio and the increase of the closed car sales permitting motor-ing in any kind of weather has increased our sales to an enormous extent; and production must necessarily keep pace with the increased sales."
Peak periods in battery sales and production under ordinary conditions in the past years have been reached during the early summer months and we expect our peak period to occur at that time this year. It is therefore all the more surprising to see
America's first sedan, a closed car for touring. Two years later, the Brougham was originated, the foreruner of the four passenger, two-door closed car now, so generally popular with all makes.
"During the short time that the demi-sedan has been offered," continued White, "national demand has consistently been greater than the ability of the factory to supply. This popularity is proof beyond question that the public has been waiting for a vehicle of this type. There is scarcely a motorist who, at some stage of his experience, has not expressed a desire for an open car in summer and a closed car in winter. The Franklin demi-sedan, for the first time, affords this kind of service through a body of unique design, the main features of which are plate glass panels mounted in the four doors and tear quarters and fitted closely into a strongly framed permanent top."
April has been designated for the introduction of the demi-sedan throut out the United States.
HOWLING HARRY'S ARM REJUVENAED
Howling Harry Hughes, after a visit to a famous "bone setter" in Los Angeles this week, is feeling much better in the region of his chucking apparatus and will show his rejuvenated stuff tomorrow against the Riverside Colored Glants on the local high school field tomorrow afternoon. Another delightful tidbit of news handed out today by Manager Pete Hax of the Anaheim Elks was to the effect that by a week Sunday Ray Bush would probably be back in the game, after a trip north. Bush has been sorely missed.
The colored crew which provides Sunday's entertainment comes with the confidence of having won 24 out of the last 25 games. The home folks are anxious to avenge their humiliation of three weeks ago and believe that if the work of the "bone setter" on Howling Harry Hughes' good right arm is all it should be that there is excellent chance doing that very thing.
MAGAZINE LAUDS USED CAR PLAN
The Motor Age, Motor World and Childton's Automobile Trade Journal, representative motor magazines of the country, have published articles now on the Anaheim or Appleby used car plan in effect here, at Fullerton and in Santa Ana, says C. P. Hamn, manager of the Anaheim Certified Used Car Market. In fact, the plan in just a couple of months has come to be recognized as the first practicable solution of the distributor's difficulties with his used cars.

Here’s a Man Who Doesn’t Know Crowds Cause Mishaps
Motorists who have not given the subject detailed study probably believe the safest time to drive is in broad daylight and dry weather.
Statistics show that it is safest to drive at dusk or night, and in rain snow, mits or fog.
This is told by Frank A. Goodwin, Massachusetts Registrar of Motor Vehicles, in the American Mutual Magazine of Boston. The publishers, an important insurance company, are conducting an effort to increase highway safety throughout the country.
The reason fewer accidents occur in bad weather and at night is, of course, because greater care is exercised. Which proves the company’s contention that most accidents are preventable.
Of the 522 fatal accidents involving automobiles that occurred in Massachusetts in 1922, writes Mr. Goodwin, 315 occurred in the daytime, 31 at dusk and 155 at night. In 444 cases the sky was clear; in 22 it rained; in 20 there was mist; in six fog and in four snow.
“The combined causes of snow and ice, mud and wet pavements,” he reports, “only counted for 119 fatal accidents, 397 taking place on dry pavements.”
Massachusetts’ effort to solve the problem of accidents, points out the writer, has been made through such analysis and in taking steps to eliminate causes. For this reason a state law has been passed, fixing the right of way on the highway. Drivers who come into a main street from an intersecting must, for instance, yield the way to cars approaching from the right. They have the right of way of those approaching from the left.
Users of liquor are a danger against which the Bay State is fighting. Mr. Goodwin states: “The question of whether or not we should it was.
Fewer Punctures On Compression Tread
A compression tread means an unusually puncture-resistant tire, says F. S. Dunlap Norwalk and Converse distributor, because regardless of what form the tread may take the rubber is the toughest obtainable for the purpose. The same rubber that forms the tread laps far over and up the body walls, whith with most easings isn’t true.
There are two treads on the Converse, and one of them had to be made with a cross partition on the outside. Dunlap declares, so effective was the compression quality of the tread found to be. This tread grips the road like a devilfish and prevents skidding, which means that the tire is protected as well as serious accident to the car avoided.
It’s the little skiddings that ruin tires.
