GABRIEL SNUBBERS FITABLE ON ANY CAR It isn't a case now of many of the leading cars having holes in the frames for Gabriel snubbers, says C. J. Nenno of the well known local accessories shop. It's a case of most of the leading cars being so provided. The work of attaching them to the car, therefore, is easy. But it's a simple matter to bore the holes, if necessary. Gabriel snubbers are bolted to the car frame and the belt fastened to the axle either with a bracket or secured around it. Here's how the snubbers work: As the cars springs compress, the spring within the coil expands and takes up the slack in the belting, then as the rebound commences, the coils of belting begin to tighten and create friction on the band of brass between them, thus forming a resistance that increases gradually as the coil compresses the spring within it. This action steadies and controls the car springs, and causes them to regain their normal position gradually without jerk or abrupt stop. The result is the occupants move with the seat instead of being bounced or jolted from it. Gabriel snubbers are adapted to all trucks as well as pleasure cars, they protect same from vibration when light and the contents from damage when loaded. C. Griffith, branch manager of Townsend & Medberry, Hudson and Essex distributors. And not only can any part of any car be obtained, but it can be obtained through any Hudson-Essex distributor or dealer. So much for service. Regarding quality, the mechanical excellence of the Essex is generally accepted by the public, says Griffin. Engineers of America and Europe have called it altogether the finest car of its size. To this tribute nearly 1000,000 owners will add their testimony. The same men who conceived and produced the super-six conceived and produced the Essex. In quality of material and workmanship they are identical. They are built in the same factory. The Hudson organization stands sponsor equally for both. There is no sounder or more permanent organization in the industry. An engineer says we are learning more about internal combustion. At any rate we are eating yeast and elmsing it with grape juices. No other car has it or has had it since the car came out eight years ago, says Charley Mann, local distributor. "It is popular because it is logical. Its design is based on the natural inclinations of the driver. To start, you throw the lever forward. To reverse, you throw the lever backward. And owners also know that it is particularly convenient, when the car is running in high speed, to have the gear shift lever in a forward position, out of the way, where it does not interfere with passengers, robes or luggage. "The use of this unique gear shift requires a special type of transmission—a type developed, patented and used exclusively by Dodge Brothers." This transmission is so designed that the countershaft—used in intermediate speeds and in reverse—is disconnected while the car is running in high gear. Power is transmitted directly to the rear axle. As over 90 per cent of all driving is done in high, thus exclusive feature obviously eliminates a vast amount of wear, in addition to eliminating gear noises and minimizing the loss of power through friction." BUYING DEMAND FOR HUP IS RECORD The existence of a buying demand that will not be wholly equalled by Hupmobile production for several months is reported by O. C. Hutchinson, general sales manager of the Hup Motor Car Corporation, and Fred B. Sides, his assistant, who have just returned to the Detroit plant from a series of trips which have taken them into more than half of the states of the Union since Jan. 1, says M. B. Lacy of the Cadillac Garage Co., local distributors. Beginning with the New York Auto Show, Mr. Sides has attended similar shows in every large city of the country from Boston in the east to Kansas City, and from Minneapolis in the north to Oklahoma City. His trips have taken him to more than 20 of the largest buying centers of the country. At the same time, Mr. Hutchinson has been covering thousands of miles of other territory. Both found the buying interest at the scores of shows held the last three months to be greater than at any previous automobile shows ever given. Information received by Lacy quotes Mr. Sides as stating that hundreds of Hupmobile dealers and distributors, bankers and other businessmen have told him that buying conditions in their respective territories are unusually bright in the cities and improving in the rural sections. More buying power than a year ago is reported from every section of the country, including these sections covered by the two Hup officials as well as those not covered. It automatically takes hold of your flywheel, starts it, and then automatically jets it go. It is the connecting link between the starting motor and the engine. San Francisco is interested with Oakland in the establishment of certified markets for used cars similar to the Anaheim and Santa Ana markets for used cars, and an association was expected to be formed this week. The two cities, while in some sense rivals, are tied up by the fact that many of the prominent distributors or cars have Oakland branches. Glendale has organized, Manager C. P. Hamm of the local market announces. San Diego dealers had representatives in Anaheim on Tuesday who visited the market and interviewed Hamm. They appeared much interested in the method of operation. The public seemed to be given cleaner cars at cheaper rates, they told Hamim. President Jim Appleby of the Orange County Motor Car Dealers' Association spoke recently before the San Diego dealers, explaining the plan.
