DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS Show me Thyself in flesh once more; Thy feast I long to spread, To bring the water for Thy feet, The ointment for Thy head. Rose Terry Cooke. Concentrate in thought and effort. This way lies success. The 1924 model of national politics will be lively and spirited. Gentlemanliness and clean sport should prevail at all times, in organized baseball. The best way to teach the young respect for law is to set them the example by respecting the law. Growth of California in population and its development in industry are consistent and durable. There is no element of fictitious booming in this growth and expansion. Pride, and pride of a very foolish kind, leads many young persons into extravagance and wanton waste of their resources. The logical end of this course is bankruptcy and ruin. Nothing under heaven is sweeter or more inspiring of the noblest emotions than a little child. Its innocence and its helplessness appeal alike to the chivalry of men, and to the tenderness and deep love of woman. Popular songs should be clean and pure, free from vulgar suggestiveness. Melodies which are sung by the millions have tremendous influence upon the life of the nation. This influence should be for good. Improper songs should be suppressed. No more sorrowful, tragic plight could befall Russia than for the religious faith of its people to be destroyed as the Bolshevik leaders in that country are proposing. That would be a curse compared with which other curses would be mild. A great merchant navy should be maintained. CITIES PRODUCE GREAT HUMAN PROBLEMS The problem of the cities is the chief problem of humanity. The best and most humankind meet in the cities, but that crime does its worst. It is the greatest charitable, philanthropic and fan movements are started. Temples of God are there, and near times are hovels and squalor indescensible. The city is the fertile breeding place. It is the nursery of crime. Which says that all criminals are in cities; crimes are committed there. But there. And it is in dealing with in great cities that one of the greatest lems of life arises. It is in cities that have hiding places. It is to cities that committing grave crimes in smaller places in cities that hardened criminals to youths and debauch them and turn lives of crime and vice. In a word, it is city which harbors the worst criminal forefee. It is a very serious problem for situated authorities to deal successfully the crime which hides its face in corners of the metropolis. If the fate of civilization and of violence solely with the cities, it would be the best that mankind has achieved vive. Which is not to say that all is cities and all is good beyond the cities bad in cities must be neutralized by which lies outside of cities. NEW PREMIER FOR GREAT BRITAIN Rumors recur to the effect that Anar Law, Premier of Great Britain, was soon because of failing health. This accepted as almost inevitable, because ar Law was in delicate health when he post. With his quitting this hither which has been discounted in frequent interest centers in the identity of his name. It is estimated that Lord Curzon wished Premiership. But there is often a slimy rumor and consummation. That their pect of new leadership in British politics dedicated. This influence should be for good. Improper songs should be suppressed. No more sorrowful, tragic plight could befall Russia than for the religious faith of its people to be destroyed as the Bolshevist leaders in that country are proposing. That would be a curse compared with which other curses would be mild. A great merchant navy should be maintained perpetually under the American flag. Congress should take up this problem without political bias and should strive earnestly to devise ways and means to keep a great mercantile marine afloat under the Stars and Stripes. Unemployment has lessened so, the country over, that it no longer is a big, threatening economic problem. Very few persons who actually want work are unable to find it. The number of men involuntarily idle is decreasing. The employment situation has improved vastly. In trying to overthrow the Christian religion, Bolshevism is planting the seeds which ultimately will cause its own overthrow. No spectacle in modern history—unless it be that of France during the bloody baptism of its revolution—has been more startling than this onslaught upon religion by the leaders of the soviet regime. More than 5,000,000 acres of land now in a state of aridity would be reclaimed, if all the irrigation projects which are under inquiry by the national government were consummated. All will be put through eventually, no doubt. And the material benefits therefrom, to this section could not be estimated, so huge would they be. The importance of hastening and facilitating shipment of commodities as a means of keeping prices within reason hardly can be everestimated. Railroads have put on much new equipment and otherwise have bettered their facilities for keeping the country clear of freight traffic congestion. Shippers should do their best to the same end. It is unfortunate that the relations which the United States bears toward a compacting nations for the fostering of just peace therein the world should be made an issue of politics in this country. This Nation should do a vast deal along this line, particularly as to the influence it exerts in behalf of peace. This potent and highly important influence should not be lost to the world. NEW YORK LETTER BY LUCY JEANNE PRICE NEW YORK, April 19.—There are signsposts of former decades and generations tucked in all parts of this rushing city; we think of landmarks as being hastily troyed to make way for material progress; the Times Building, for instance, right Broadway and Forty-second street, is to of a florist, cut deep into the stone; There is no florist in that building and serby who ever notice it at all wondrous presence there. Sticking your nose into other people's business is an excellent way of getting it pushed out. The will of the people leaves the politicians too much. Some men need hair cuts badly and others have them that way. Few movie actresses are chosen for their faces. Usually it is a matter of form. It is easy to find fault. But there isn't much reward.
