SPORTING EVENTS Boxing on roller skates has been introduced in Berlin, Germany. Of the four lemmatches played between Susanne Lenglen and Molla Mallory, Lenglen won three, and Mallory one. Benny Leonard has held the lightweight championship crown since 1917. He is 27 years old. The right arm of Wille Hoppe is baured for $10,000, and he is ordered not to do any hand shaking. The greatest speed record ever made by a motorboat—$0,567 miles an hour—is held by Miss America II. The United States, at the present time, holds the championships for boxing, gold, polo, tennis and yachting. Philadelphia has a basket ball team composed of five brothers, the McNichols, who are former University of Pennsylvania basketball players. The St. Louis Nationals will wear minerals 6 inches high on their sleeves while playing at home, that patrons may distinguish the players easily. American ring titles are held as follows Three by Italians, three by Irish-Americans, one by a Hebrew, and one by a roan of American parentage. At the annual tournament of the Woman's National Bowling Ass'n, now in session at St. Louis, Mo., there are 106 five-women teams, 175 doubles, and 343 singles. This meet has broken all records for the number of entries. Soldiers of the American army made athletics so popular in France that it is now the usual thing to see boys playing baseball throughout that country. Besides that sport, tennis, rowing and swimming have met with great favor. Because the Athletic Commission of Minnesota forbids boxing bouts between white men and negroes, the States does not permit fights of any kind to be held. The commission is charged with violating the Fourteenth amendment to the Federal Constitution. Hoses REPORT AD WOLGAST DEAD IN HOSPITAL (By International News Service) PEORIA, Ill., April 18.—Ad Wolgast, former lightweight champion of the world, was reported to have died at the Illinois State hospital for the insane here today. Efforts to identify the body as that of Wolgast, however, had not been successful late this afternoon. WINS MARATHON (By International News Service) BOSTON, April 19.—Clarence DeMar, veteran of many marathons today won for the second consecutive time the annual 25 mile marathon of the B. A. A. U. DeMaz's time was two hours, 23 minutes, 47 2-5 seconds. His record last year was 2 hours, 18 minutes, 10 seconds. EAGEN WINS TITLE (I. N. S. SHORTSTOP (By International News Service) KANSAS CITY, April 19.—Glenn Wright, shortstop for the Kansas City Blues of the American Association, has been sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League, according to reports current here today, which are considered reliable. The price paid by Pittsburgh is not known, but it is believed to be in excess of the $40,000 offered for him last year by Clark Griffith of the Washington team. Purses given for horse races in this country during a season amount to $9,000.00.
