DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS The only use of time is in bringing the heart into partnership with high principles and thus rising into fellowship with God Thomas Starr King. There are a good many consciences going around afflicted with sleeping sickness. Peace in the Near East seems to be assured. Europe gradually is veering toward greater assurance of pacification. Los Angeles is to have the Olympic games in 1932. The European contestants may come over in airships, by that time. Oil swindlers and other frauds should be excluded rigidly from the use of the mails to further their dishonest, cheating purposes. California is gaining steadily and rapidly in population. The 1930 census will show remarkable increase in number of inhabitants heer. The automobilist has been the apostle of good roads. This county owes its permanently improved highways largely to the influence of motor vehicles. There is urgent need of relief for the suffering many in the Near East. Extending aid to that region is a philanthropy that well may engage the generous attention of Americans. Prosperity is rife throughout the country. Its frontal waves or its backwash affect every locality. The commonly of it is particularly gratifying. It has spread to the extreme limits of the land. Plans for a handsome and commodious American Legion building here are creditable to the city and to this very worthy patriotic organization, and the movement to raise funds by popular subscription should be met by quick and generous response. MINIMUM WAGE REVENUE IS DEPLORED Seldom is a finding of the United States supreme court received with so much keen thoroughout the country as has been enforced the opinion of the highest court in invading an act of congress fixing minimum wages women and minor girls in the District of Columbia. The decision is expected to be vastly minimum wage laws in California a dozen other states. The high tribunal's opinion was made bare majority—five of the nine Justice gives impetus to the movement in Congress require that at least seven of the nine must agree before an act of Congress declared unconstitutional. It is gratifying that Chief Justice Justices Holmes and Sanford should board, human attitude that there is no police power in Congress and State legislation to regulate working conditions than the regulate wages and that as there has uniformity in holding that working can be prescribed by lawmaking bodies laws—in the judgment of these three—that wages also are a proper sub-legislation. Besides the mere fact of prescribing able wage, there is the higher considerate moral weal of women and girls and action this has upon society. Minimum wage laws in California where, undoubtedly have been benefited their wholesome effects recommend continuance. They give women a fair make an independent livelihood under conditions which do not imperil life and widespread dissatisfaction over the majority of the Supreme Court will lead agitation in favor of a consummation empowering Congress and legislature to establish minimum wage which should be included an amendment congress the right to abolish child- Prosperity is rife throughout the country. That business conditions throughout the country are sound is the expert opinion of Charles M. Schwab. Manufacturers and merchants are preceding with caution and prudence, and their conservation is bracing the country's economic structure. Universities, colleges and technical schools in California are supported well. Student endowments are common. Student enrollments are extraordinarily heavy. Education is given the attention and support in this state which its importance warrants. The steel industry is very active and prosperous. This reflects general thriving. For when steel prospers, so does the country, and vice versa. One of the first industries to feel depression is steel. And one of the first to show the beneficial effect of economic recovery after a period of depression is steel. President Harding does not want his projected trip through the West regarded as a campaign tour, to influence public opinion for 1924. Already embarrassed and annoyed by the partisan construction placed upon his proposed journey, Mr. Harding may forgive his trip altogether if there is not surcease from reports and discussion attributing political motives to him in traveling about the country. TOWN IN REVIEW Bliss rhymes with kiss, which is more truth than poetry. Some men like to fish. Others had rather drink at home. The unhappy ending of many a popular novel is when it is screened. This world owes every man a living if he can prove it does. They say the lawn dress will be popular this spring. We say this will make the laundress popular. Most of those determined to remain old maids are under sixteen. Alcohol and ginger ale is a bad solution of the booze problem. About the most expensive thing in this funny world of ours is money. ILLITERATES NUMBER IN CALIFORNIA There is far too much illiteracy in California. There are more than 95,000 persons who cannot write their names in any language. The majority of these are white. These figures, from the National Dept. of Labor, should stir Californiaians to reefforts to wipe out illiteracy. This should be left wholly to educational authorities and welfare organizations as well as bodies, well may join in efforts to ban grant ignorance from the state. Love makes the world go round, without enough sleep. The sad thing about buying on auto is you run into so many creditors. Men use periods when they talk. Women use only commas. Some are born with a silver spoon in their mouth. The others have to get out and stir for themselves. A girl with a heart gets won. A girl without a heart gets one. One lighted gas jet consumes as much air as four people or a book agent. They say Chinese is spoken by 40,000,000 people. This probably includes all the babies in America. Always wait until a young lady gets up before calling her up or she is liable to call you down. Salt will keep grease from smoking. Nothing will keep a boy. A sea lion eats 40 cans of salmon a day. Just imagine the troubles he must have opening his cans. Brown boiling fish add a little vinegar. When boiling them out of money use a little sugar. No wonder babies grow up to look like their fathers. All they do is loaf around and raise their pet. Anything can happen. But not enough things can happen. There seems to be no doubt that the area is expanding, and while the English done much through the great works at to enlarge the cultivable land, yet they constantly diminishing and still greatly must be financed near the head waters lakes of the Nile if it would protect its incoming desert. It is within historical knowledge that Iran desert, Persia and Mesopotamia sites of cities of enormous wealth, but and a high material civilization. Their testimony that the increasing desert made much for its own, and the fertile North Africa, once the great source of for the people of Rome, are now drying sand. Climatologists claim that this is due into the drying up of the world, which maintain that it is due to the wet and coldiods of which geology furnishes convictions, that have marked the earth's and that the widening desert is merely arising from wet to dry and dry to wet. While the periods are such that though years lagge between, we owe it to the long distant future so to record and supply the records of these changes that the alien man may become intensified, and by thought protect his civilization from decay by solving the problems. The comforting thought is that a cleric based on humanity, intellectually and quality has always been able to sustain spite of the change in material condition. WISE AND WIT Endurance is the sequence of Fate. Man's mind will reach a vague distill never a final sphere. As wild cluster will elong to rules soetter human life. Science can explain everything except the reason an infant son needs three drinks of water between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. We'll never think Burbank a real wizard until he shows us how to cross a street with impunity. A bride is a person who thinks his pipe would look perfectly darling with a pink ribbon tied off it. The Sphinx may not talk now, but the flatness of her nose would indicate that she once talked too much. Modern construction is safe enough if you will get the plaster on before taking down the outside scaffolding. If it is true that more boys are born after a war, it would seem to prove that they use very good judgment. If the architect's plans go awry and leave a little space, not quite large enough for a closet, he calls it a breakfast room. A hick town is a place where loyal churchmen brag that their parson shaves every morning. Correct this sentence: "The man stepped out on the street in a new spring hat and did not feel at all conspicuous." What we can't understand is why statesmen never seem so wise in congress as they seem on a chautauqua platform. Justice will be served. The profiteer frisks the government, and 200 years from now his progeny will still be paying it back.
