STAR TRUCK HERE; SHOWN AT APPLEBY'S The remarkable Star car, with its standard parts, is equalled or eclipsed by the Star truck, the first of which reached the showrooms of Jim Appleby this week. Timken axles and bearings, Continental motor, Warner transmission, Fedder's radiator, Spicer's universals and shaft, body of the Continental Body Works, self starter and mountable rims—all the wonderful collection of parts found in the other Star vehicles are embodied in the truck. Orders already are waiting filling. Two carloads of Durants and three carloads of Stars all told arrived this week, and Appleby and his sides now have all models, or had up to Thursday. The Star is expected to make the most remarkable showing yet when the sales of all makes of car in the state are made public. Purant, president of the company. The Star car sales are omitted, because they are manufactured by the Star Motor Company. This year sales will reach 7,000 cars, says President Durant. The company's plant in addition will build about $2,000 Star cars. USL STORAGE BATTERY SERVICE USL SUCCESS HAS GROWN BY DEMONSTRATING VALUE IN SERVICE. USL solved the complex problem of an individual electric lighting system for railway cars. Today the majority are USL equipped. The same quality which led to supremacy in the railway field, and in the many other lines in which USL products have proved their excellence, is built into USL automobile batteries. Fifty makes of cars equip exclusively with USL. The list includes Browster, Chalmers, Columbia, Dort, Durant, Earl, Elgin, Ford (partial), Gray, Maxwell, Overland, Star, Stephens, Stevens-Duryea and Willys-Knight. On the strength of results shown in service USL production has grown steadily and is now double the best previous year. No automobile builder who has used USL batteries during the past three years has changed from USL. Six prominent car manufacturers have shifted their sources of battery supply within the past year—five of them have changed to USL. Five important new automobile makers have entered the field during the last twelve months—four of them adopted USL. HAS EXCELLENT YEAR The Maxwell Motor Corporation's annual statement for 1922 just released for publication by Wm. Robt. Wilson, president, is a record of remarkable achievement for the past year, and marks the Maxwell as one of the outstanding successes among automobile companies, say Turton & Dumsdon. Maxwell and Chalmers distributors. The construction of the Maxwell product has been obvious to all who follow motor car design, but that such astonishing financial progress could have been accomplished coodenially comes as a complete and a commendable surprise. The profits of the Maxwell exceeded $2,000,000 for the year. On December 31, 1922 cash and carry security balances were in excess of $3,000,000 with a ratio of current assets to current liabilities of approximately 3:1-2 to 1. The splendid year-end showing comes on top of a record for the year which includes the retirement of over $8,000,000 in funded debt and the financing of the acquisition of the entire ownership of the physical assets of the Chalmers Motor Corporation. Over 55,000 cars were sold in 1922, placing the Maxwell in eighth position in the whole automobile industry; notwithstanding the fact that 1923 schedules call for a substantial increase over the previous years business, car sales for January and February are exceeding the increased schedule by more than 10 percent and March production and sales will show an even better increase. Jensen Authorized Rayfield Distributor Go to the authorized distributor! THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Compression Tread New Tire Departure What is the compression tread of the Converse tire? It's something more than a tread of a certain shape, says F. C. Dunleop of the Nu-Way Tire Co. It means that the material of the tire, the warp and woe, are literally compressed when the tire is in use. The cord material is saturated in rubber, which impregnates every part of it, and the cord cannot be separated from the rubber layers. Rubber when pulled apart can be cut or term easily—this applies particularly to the tread itself. If compressed, it can hardly be cut with a sharp knife. A multiplicity of rubber-imangles—insured for the new tire a distribution of stress and strain which vastly increased its efficiency. The fabric tire with its stiff material was continually fighting the road, and losing the battle. But the cord accommodated itself to the road—absorbing with ease the shock and grind of road running. Due to this flexibility and power to warp itself around obstacles, stone bruises were eliminated, under inflation swells, lessened and a new standard of tire value achieved. When Dealer Buys, Time to Buy Tires Taking in 50 or 60 Para-Bell cord tires, besides a lot of tubes, the Re-libale Tire company this week prepared for a lively summer demand. "When the dealers are buying, the public should buy," says Roy Mendoza, a member of the firm and reaffirmed the announcement of another dealer that tires were going up again. Mendoza doesn't pretend to know what the percentage of advance will be, but avers 15 percent is none too large an estimate. The company now has on hand a complete line of Para-Bell and Apex tires in all sizes. The Para-Bell, says Mendoza, is an especially good tire for mountain roads. LORBA LINDA. April 14. (Sp. Mrs. R. NEW DEMI-SEDAN UNIQUE IN DESIGN An exhibition of interest in automobile circles features the new Demi-Sedan introduced this month by the Franklin Automobile Company thru the Bob White Co., northern Orange co distributors of the Nash and Franklin. The Demi-Sedan reveals an advancement in motor car design exclusive with Franklin. Its invention brought to motordom the original all-purpose, all-season car. In affording both protection of perfect enclosure and also the unobstructed openness and unlimited usefulness of a touring model, this Franklin is unique. The new body is built with plate glass panels mounted in the four doors and rear quarters and fitted closely into a strongly framed top which is integral with the body proper. The glass enclosure presents an extraordinarily large and clear area for outlook and driving vision. Any degree of ventilation desired is secured by sliding the windows in their felt channels and by regulation of the cowl ventilators. The transformation from enclosure to openness is effected by a simple change of window panels. BAD CHECK CHARGE A compulsit was issued by G. B. Brown, justice of the peace, for the arrest of S. B.
